Do you use the German version of the game or an English one? I have switched my default keyboard layout to US standard both for SC2 and because it is more useful for programming. I'm still not perfectly used to it, but it definitely allows me to remap my hotkeys more freely.

Symptom: Neither Tiler's tool nor manual MPQ editing is able to change the hotkeys to be anything other than the defaults. Here's something I learned the hard way. I think it's a bug in the SC2's ability to read MPQs. Let's say that the current build is 12345 and you decide to back up your patch files before using Tiler's tool or an MPQ editor as you always should. Now lets say you back up the current patch 12345 folder just making a copy in the versions folder called "12345 - Copy" or something. Well here's what might happen, as it happened to me. SC2 will see the new folder "12345 - Copy", see that it's newer and look in THERE for the hotkeys file. Since it's a backup, it will find the original hotkeys and use that. The effect is that no matter what you do, SC2 keeps using the default keys. Tiler's tool can't change them, manual MPQ manipulation can't change them, nothing. I hunted and search all the MPQs for anything remotely related to hotkeys, I tried editing the grid layout keys, NOTHING would work. Then on a hunch, I moved my backup out of the versions folder, to the desktop and POOF! Like magic, all the keys I had been trying to configure for hours just started to work and has ever since. So moral of the story: Back up your files, but back them up OUTSIDE of the SC2 install folder.

Also I have to disagree with MorroW. Changing hotkeys should be okay for both Starcraft 1 and 2. I do understand that arrangers for big events arent going to allow hotkeys to be changed but I think thats more for practical reasons and to avoid complications. There is no manner issue with changing your hotkeys and controlls in either game. People have very different hands and whatever blizzards decides to be a good way to setup might not work at all for some people. Wich would make playing the game much harder for those then the ones that just happen to think that blizzards keymapping feels good. Ive made a personal adjustment in swiching out the CTRL and Capslock mappings on my keyboard. I simple wanted to have control and shift closer to 1234567 to make binding easier and quicker with my small hands. I have also made the button to the left of 1 work as 0 so its now bindable. Now after reading this thread I will also set up the F keys to work like in good old broodwar.

@Montzerg : well done on moving the shift/ctrl keys higher, I have to admit I hate the awkward position I have to place my hand to hit ctrl+F1 to select all idle workers... I think I'll try what you did

UI/Hotkey adjustments: They are not planning on having a fully customizable UI but they will have customized hotkeys. For advanced players, they can even open a textfile and edit each individual hotkey. I feel confident that blizz won't ban people for changing the textfile. I can finally change the hotkeys!!!!!! Also I agree with previous posters. Why should this be a bad thing? How is it bad that I have a keyboard layout suited for me and not one that is decided by blizz. One might argue that blizz layout give advantage to some players and disadvantage to others so the argument "its same for everyone" doesn't quite hold. The only time "it's same for everyone" if everyone has a keyboard layout that suits their hands.

If you have a razer mice then you can download the drivers from www.razerzone.com and set up some cool stuff in there. Personaly I think that button 9 and 0 are bothersome to use ingame so ive made a adjustment with these razer drivers. In the drivers I have opted to have my scrollwheel working as button clicks. So my scrollwheel-up works as a click on 0 and scrollwheel-down as a click on 9. So what I do with this is: My first two queens are bound to the scrollwheel as Z (as im currently playing Zerg). I simply bind it by holding CTRL and scroll my mousewheel up/down, and its then saved on these buttons. Another benefit with this is that when I scroll-up for my first queen, the scrollwheel spams so ill automatically get moved the the queens possition on the map and I can then instantly press V and click my hatchery to spawn larvas. Then proceed to scroll-down spawn larva on the other hatchery. I spawn larvas on my 2 first hatcherys in a time under 1 second by using this method. I also think this would be great if I was playing protoss and wanted to hotkey some pylons for Warpin possitions. Id just scroll wheel up to get to my possition and start warping. Whats good about having it on the scrollwheel instead of a regular binding is that your keyboard hand can get ready for your keyboard actions while you are scrolling with ur other hand and basically preform the two tasks simultaniously. Works great, try it out! On a sidenote ill just go ahead and post my current keybindings as Zerg. 1-3 for units. 4 for all hatcherys Mousewheel up/down as well as 5, 6, 7 and 8 are for my queens. Ive also adjusted my CameraSave and CameraView to work with F1-F4 instead of F5-F8, and moved the select idle worker and select hero bindings to F5-F8 instead. This is how it was in good old BroodWar and im so used to these keys. Must have in my opinion.

I use the US standard keyboard layout and a very unconventional hotkey setup instead (still optimizing it). As an example: My control group for queens currently is 'A'.
