I'm sitting on a Q8400 quad with 4gb RAM, thinking of getting a 5830, would that be a bad idea or should it be fine. Also rather confused by the increasing increments for PCI express version numbers, haven't really been keeping up with the tech specs (not really a techie here) so all of a sudden I'm seeing like PCI ex 2.1s and going what? Is that even compatible with my mobo now? Edit: I guess I might as well ask about power supply, too. I'm looking primarily at http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139006 aided in large part by the fact that I have good confidence in Corsair, but http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817341018&nm_mc=EMC-IGNEFL051410&cm_mmc=EMC-IGNEFL051410-_-EMC-051410-Index-_-PowerSupplies-_-17341018-LC2B is really, really cheap at the moment. The latter also doesn't specify amps on their 12V rail, while Corsair tends to load massive amps into the 12V, which is a large reason why I usually just get Corsair and be carefree about power consump. 5830 is a good buy if you are interested in dx11. If not just get a 4890 which is cheaper and more powerful. Or just get a 5850, best bang for your buck.

Here's what my computer looks like in dxdiag Operating System: Windows Vista Home BIOS: Phoenix - AwardBIOS v6.00PG Processor: AMD Phenom(tm) 8400 Triple-Core Processor (3 CPUs), ~2.1 GHz Memory: 3070MB RAM Graphics Card: ATI Radeon HD 4800 Series (I think it's a 4850 with 512 MB) So I was able to run SC2 at High originally, but realized that in any battles especially in 2v2s the frame rate would literally just die. I got about 70 FPS at the start of the game as Zerg, but soon the FPS drops to 40 and then maintains a steady 10-15 midgame, and still in big big battles my FPS will just drop literally down to 2-3 FPS and I can barely move. Mothership popping basically breaks my framerate too. I moved my resolution down from 1680x1050 to 1440x900 and reduced a lot of my graphics settings (turned shadows off, most things on medium or low, etc.) and it seemed to alleviate a little bit of my problems, but not totally. I start the game now with about 100 FPS, drops to 70 and about 15-25 during midgame, and still drops quite low in the biggest battles. I don't think I've had any problems in 1v1 but in 2v2s if the game goes long and people macro up I still start to lag. Any suggestions? I tried reading stuff about bottlenecks and this thread and whatever but I don't know much about computers!

Considering I can run at Ultra with an HD5450 at the same resolution (with a Celeron DC E1200!), I would think that the 5770 with 1 GB GDDR5 should be able to, even with the same CPU. The big problem (and it's with any AMD GPU) is the lack of in-game AA (resulting in jaggies/over-sharp detail), which is why I backed it down to High.

Not sure what is going on with your setup because the HD 4850 should be absolutely fine at high settings.. :/ On May 20 2010 01:33 irishash wrote: Show nested quote + On May 19 2010 14:13 semantics wrote: On May 19 2010 12:25 FragKrag wrote: 5770 is pretty much the best card in the price range other than the HD 4890 (if you can find one). at 1280x720 he can probably ultra it without many drops assuming his cpu fits the bill. for close to $200 i better be able to play on ultra at 1920x1080 Should be possible with the 5770, 5830, and the 4890, though the 5770 may have problems at the larger battles. edit: something was said above, that all ATI cards have no AA? is this in starcraft 2 or in all games?

![]() Here is what I have so far. I need to choose a processor, I already have an antec 300 case, and I'll need a HSF and PSU. What are your guys' choices for those components. Also, never fear the prices. If I order soon there are about $65 in mail in rebates/promo codes.

Also if you have a antec 300 i think you can save 20 bucks and not go the twin frozor for the gpu, or hell if you don't like the fans in the antec case a little loud you can replace them with higher quality noctura fans or scythe fans. PSU i'd go with ~500w psu there are plenty of choices just depends on what is cheap for the day HSF depends on price there are plenty of good ones http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835103065 shame on the price though used to be cheaper but cost of being popular

Hyper 212 is a complete waste now because just 2 days ago it was at $27 ![]() As for PSU, just go for the Antec/Corsair/Sea Sonic/Silverstone that suits your needs and is 80+ certified (or higher ie Bronze)
