Valve has always allowed custom servers & ladders to exist within CS:GO including ESEA & FACEIT. However Blizzard has never allowed anything of the sort and it's extraordinarily unlikely they ever will. So no I don't see it happening as it would require Blizzard to fundimentally alter how StarCraft 2 & Battle.net function.

How can I do this in sc2? I downloaded a few maps butbit seems like open games and lobbies dont work like they used to? I'm really confused and would love some advice as this is how I spent most of my sc playing, not ladder only.

If you have a property that’s beloved, is no longer particularly monetisable, but you get a PR boost for maintaining, why not open the possibilities to third party ladders down the line? Or, alternative a company like ESL end up in charge of the SC2 ladder and maps. Both being arguably preferable to a Blizzard that holds all the key to alter things, but chooses not to.

Development isn't free. SC2 was designed from the start to require battle.net (2.0). Extricating that is going to take a lot of time (and thus money). I guess they could make SC2 open source and let the community figure that out, but if the battle.net 2.0 code is considered proprietary that may not be possible even if they might consider that option for SC2 itself.

Even as an intermediary step, you could still use the current backbone, merely have ESL or another partner have the input on say, maps and seasons and the likes. It’s not a third party ladder, but at least it’s getting updated more regularly. More thinking down the line if Blizz do fully go to pull the plug, could we not just log as normal but connect to ‘Community Europe’ etc, which the community would maintain? I’m not au fair enough with how all these systems work. I gather that actually patching the game would be rather difficult, whether it would be easier to make changes via a ladder of essentially custom maps with tweaked values. I mean it’s very speculative of course. They may not change much with the game moving forwards but the real worse case scenario of no servers whatsoever and what to do then is probably quite some way off.
