Only four players remained heading into the final day of the WCS Global Finals. (T)SpeCial and (Z)soO were slated to go first, with either (T)TY or (Z)Rogue meeting the winner of that match in a Best of 7 grand final to determine the world champion.

(Wiki)2017 WCS Global Finals

The series opened on Odyssey. SpeCial paired a hellbat drop in soO’s main with a run-by in the natural. soO defended with roaches and queens, losing 17 workers, but managed to reach four bases. SpeCial killed two bases with a large mech army, but soO, who had killed SpeCial’s third, came back and cleaned up his army as well. soO reestablished his expansions, added on vipers and attacked the terran's third once more. The effort appeared to have stalled as blinding clouds expired, but Special abruptly left the game with soO's forces attacking his orbital command.

soO went for one base ravager aggression on Abyssal Reef. SpeCial scouted it with a reaper and prepared a bunker, but got supply blocked and struggled to defend with marines and a cyclone. soO reinforced and the bunker eventually fell as SpeCial's worker count plummeted. It didn't take long for SpeCial to tap out, giving soO a 2-0 lead.

Game three took place on Mech Depot, soO took a quick third base, which SpeCial aimed to punish with a hellbat timing. It fell flat though, allowing soO to saturate his three bases and amass a respectable roach count. SpeCial tried to attack again, this time with cyclones, but was repelled and chased all the way home. Hydralisks flooded across the map, sealing the deal and sending soO to the finals.

Game one took place on Interloper. TY shut down Rogue's zergling drop before wiping out the four queens Rogue had carried across the map. The pressure relieved, TY assembled a force of hellions and marines on three bases, morphing the former into hellbats and trading very well against zerglings, baneling and queens outside Rogues natural. Rogue appeared to have held, but the cavalry arrived, putting TY ahead 1-0.

Up 1-0, TY went for a cc first on Ascension to Aiur. His hellbat timing was pushed back, but the follow up attack with a pair of thors allowed a hellion run by to kill 29 workers. From there Rogue was always behind. He evened the supply with the aid of swarm hosts, but TY sieged Rogue's fourth, enduring a wave of locusts as well as hydralisks and banelings before killing the base and ultimately going ahead 2-0.

TY opened 3CC on Mech Depot, but overreacted after scanning Rogue's banelings nest. He built five engineering bays, forcing Rogue to give up on the ling flood. Rogue macroed up to four bases, getting banelings speed and other upgrades. With TY pushing onto his creep, Rogue went for zergling and baneling run-bys which killed a few workers and delayed reinforcements. Meanwhile, Rogue cleaned up TY’s drop in his main while the frontal push towards the Jin Air Zerg's third was out of steam. Down on bases and supply, TY tapped out.

Game four started with a pool first from Rogue and a CC first from TY. 21 workers died to hellions, but Rogue managed to draw the game out with efficient swarm host usage. The game erupted into chaos as a zergling run-by and hellions killed 43 SCVs and 35 drones respectively. Rogue was left with swarm hosts and corruptors, giving TY's hellions and cyclones free reign. The players each lost bases and workers, but Rogue, who was staggering his locust spawns, managed to pounce on the last of TY's hellions, sending the series to game five.

TY's proxy two-rax was scouted by an overlord and cleaned up, but the game was relatively stable as both players got up to three bases. Hellions killed eleven drones as TY powered into mech, but once more it was swarm hosts that kept Rogue in the game. He harassed with locusts and roaches, eliminating bases and then more than forty workers as TY vainly tried to create something on offense. In the end, he failed and, lacking an economy at home, TY conceded, setting up a ZvZ final between Rogue and soO.

Rogue went for a ling flood on Abyssal Reef after opening pool first. soO had foregone zergling speed, but managed to hold with queens and zerglings. Rogue backed off, taking a faster third, but soO had +1 ranged attack and roach speed on the way. Rogue teched into a lurker den, but soO had built a massive army advantage while constantly contaminating Rogue's +1 attack . soO canceled Rogue's fourth and barrelled into Rogue's third, crushing his army and taking a 1-0 lead.

Rogue once more opened pool first in game two, while soO took his hatchery before his pool. Rogue pressured with a few zerglings while pooling more of them in his main. When speed finished, they streamed across the map and, while soO held the first salvo, the reinforcements overwhelmed his queens. His workers dead, soO tapped out, tying the score at 1-1.

Game three started with a failed ling flood and nydus before mutalisks and lurkers from Rogue. soO tried to force the issue with roach/hydra, but couldn't break through. soO eventually got his own lurkers and killed Rogue's third base while Rogue killed natural and took a supply lead. He rebuilt on roaches and vipers while soO, who was on a greater number of bases, made more lurkers. Rogue tried to attack soO's base in the southeast, but lost the fight convincingly. soO, sensing weakness, charged across the map, wiping Rogue out to take a 2-1 lead.

Game four was a repeat of game two, with Rogue evening the series with a ling flood that caught soO trying to tech to lair and roaches. His queens quickly fell as well as did a critical number of drones, earning a concession.

soO went for a 13/12 on Odyssey, but the attack was held despite Rogue opening hatchery first. soO resigned himself to expanding, but Rogue had taken a nearly 20 worker lead, having attacked soO's main with zerglings and four banelings. soO tried to get something done with zerglings, but Rogue had roaches, banelings, queens and a spine and easily held to go up 3-2.

With Rogue one game from a title, the players met on Acolyte. After a passive early and mid game, Rogue was able to assemble a technologically superior army. He crossed the map with brood lords, infestors, vipers and hydralisks. soO tried to defend with corruptors, but was pushed back to his natural. He eventually killed the brood lords while defending with lurkers, but Rogue's economy was too much. Reinforcements streamed across the map, decimating soO's army. soO soon conceded, making Rogue the WCS Global Finals champion.

God, everything was so perfect for that amazing redemption story, he got so far. Sorry if that takes away from Rogue's hard earned victory, but I can't help feeling this way.

Ugh I hate when soO reaches finals because it takes away from the other players win. Even soo even admitted it does, when he said at gsl we should be celebrating the other players victory.

Congrats Rogue! I wish it was sos in the finals but jin air still is killing it!!

no, before blizzcon he said if there will be tournaments to play in 2018, he will play. I wonder however if he changes his mind after this game. Hopefully not.
Why so serious?

i can't honestly say that this was a Blizzcon finals that I was really hyped for, especially with my favourites and Protoss getting taken out, but it was neat to see Rogue carrying on the standard that sOs originally raised.

Also, it means that:

Jin Air will only win on odd years against Zerg.

TBH he's been a top tier Zerg for years, it's insane that only in the 2nd half of this year has he been able to pull through and win some championships.

Yeah, i hope this put fire in soO's belly to aim for first place next year. Gotta break that curse of second place (aka first loser).
