Only four players remained heading into the final day of the WCS Global Finals. (T)SpeCial and (Z)soO were slated to go first, with either (T)TY or (Z)Rogue meeting the winner of that match in a Best of 7 grand final to determine the world champion.

(Wiki)2017 WCS Global Finals

The series opened on Odyssey. SpeCial paired a hellbat drop in soO’s main with a run-by in the natural. soO defended with roaches and queens, losing 17 workers, but managed to reach four bases. SpeCial killed two bases with a large mech army, but soO, who had killed SpeCial’s third, came back and cleaned up his army as well. soO reestablished his expansions, added on vipers and attacked the terran's third once more. The effort appeared to have stalled as blinding clouds expired, but Special abruptly left the game with soO's forces attacking his orbital command.

soO went for one base ravager aggression on Abyssal Reef. SpeCial scouted it with a reaper and prepared a bunker, but got supply blocked and struggled to defend with marines and a cyclone. soO reinforced and the bunker eventually fell as SpeCial's worker count plummeted. It didn't take long for SpeCial to tap out, giving soO a 2-0 lead.

Game three took place on Mech Depot, soO took a quick third base, which SpeCial aimed to punish with a hellbat timing. It fell flat though, allowing soO to saturate his three bases and amass a respectable roach count. SpeCial tried to attack again, this time with cyclones, but was repelled and chased all the way home. Hydralisks flooded across the map, sealing the deal and sending soO to the finals.

Game one took place on Interloper. TY shut down Rogue's zergling drop before wiping out the four queens Rogue had carried across the map. The pressure relieved, TY assembled a force of hellions and marines on three bases, morphing the former into hellbats and trading very well against zerglings, baneling and queens outside Rogues natural. Rogue appeared to have held, but the cavalry arrived, putting TY ahead 1-0.

Up 1-0, TY went for a cc first on Ascension to Aiur. His hellbat timing was pushed back, but the follow up attack with a pair of thors allowed a hellion run by to kill 29 workers. From there Rogue was always behind. He evened the supply with the aid of swarm hosts, but TY sieged Rogue's fourth, enduring a wave of locusts as well as hydralisks and banelings before killing the base and ultimately going ahead 2-0.

TY opened 3CC on Mech Depot, but overreacted after scanning Rogue's banelings nest. He built five engineering bays, forcing Rogue to give up on the ling flood. Rogue macroed up to four bases, getting banelings speed and other upgrades. With TY pushing onto his creep, Rogue went for zergling and baneling run-bys which killed a few workers and delayed reinforcements. Meanwhile, Rogue cleaned up TY’s drop in his main while the frontal push towards the Jin Air Zerg's third was out of steam. Down on bases and supply, TY tapped out.

Game four started with a pool first from Rogue and a CC first from TY. 21 workers died to hellions, but Rogue managed to draw the game out with efficient swarm host usage. The game erupted into chaos as a zergling run-by and hellions killed 43 SCVs and 35 drones respectively. Rogue was left with swarm hosts and corruptors, giving TY's hellions and cyclones free reign. The players each lost bases and workers, but Rogue, who was staggering his locust spawns, managed to pounce on the last of TY's hellions, sending the series to game five.

TY's proxy two-rax was scouted by an overlord and cleaned up, but the game was relatively stable as both players got up to three bases. Hellions killed eleven drones as TY powered into mech, but once more it was swarm hosts that kept Rogue in the game. He harassed with locusts and roaches, eliminating bases and then more than forty workers as TY vainly tried to create something on offense. In the end, he failed and, lacking an economy at home, TY conceded, setting up a ZvZ final between Rogue and soO.

Rogue went for a ling flood on Abyssal Reef after opening pool first. soO had foregone zergling speed, but managed to hold with queens and zerglings. Rogue backed off, taking a faster third, but soO had +1 ranged attack and roach speed on the way. Rogue teched into a lurker den, but soO had built a massive army advantage while constantly contaminating Rogue's +1 attack . soO canceled Rogue's fourth and barrelled into Rogue's third, crushing his army and taking a 1-0 lead.

Rogue once more opened pool first in game two, while soO took his hatchery before his pool. Rogue pressured with a few zerglings while pooling more of them in his main. When speed finished, they streamed across the map and, while soO held the first salvo, the reinforcements overwhelmed his queens. His workers dead, soO tapped out, tying the score at 1-1.

Game three started with a failed ling flood and nydus before mutalisks and lurkers from Rogue. soO tried to force the issue with roach/hydra, but couldn't break through. soO eventually got his own lurkers and killed Rogue's third base while Rogue killed natural and took a supply lead. He rebuilt on roaches and vipers while soO, who was on a greater number of bases, made more lurkers. Rogue tried to attack soO's base in the southeast, but lost the fight convincingly. soO, sensing weakness, charged across the map, wiping Rogue out to take a 2-1 lead.

Game four was a repeat of game two, with Rogue evening the series with a ling flood that caught soO trying to tech to lair and roaches. His queens quickly fell as well as did a critical number of drones, earning a concession.

soO went for a 13/12 on Odyssey, but the attack was held despite Rogue opening hatchery first. soO resigned himself to expanding, but Rogue had taken a nearly 20 worker lead, having attacked soO's main with zerglings and four banelings. soO tried to get something done with zerglings, but Rogue had roaches, banelings, queens and a spine and easily held to go up 3-2.

With Rogue one game from a title, the players met on Acolyte. After a passive early and mid game, Rogue was able to assemble a technologically superior army. He crossed the map with brood lords, infestors, vipers and hydralisks. soO tried to defend with corruptors, but was pushed back to his natural. He eventually killed the brood lords while defending with lurkers, but Rogue's economy was too much. Reinforcements streamed across the map, decimating soO's army. soO soon conceded, making Rogue the WCS Global Finals champion.

God, everything was so perfect for that amazing redemption story, he got so far. Sorry if that takes away from Rogue's hard earned victory, but I can't help feeling this way.

Ugh I hate when soO reaches finals because it takes away from the other players win. Even soo even admitted it does, when he said at gsl we should be celebrating the other players victory.

Congrats Rogue! I wish it was sos in the finals but jin air still is killing it!!

i can't honestly say that this was a Blizzcon finals that I was really hyped for, especially with my favourites and Protoss getting taken out, but it was neat to see Rogue carrying on the standard that sOs originally raised.

Also, it means that:

Jin Air will only win on odd years against Zerg.

TBH he's been a top tier Zerg for years, it's insane that only in the 2nd half of this year has he been able to pull through and win some championships.

I feel bad for soO but man! This was a unique chance to get a Second Place at Blizzcon and the guy earned it!
It is kind of funny as well, also I don't think he is "that sad" or anything now, with all those Second Places he is still getting a lot of money and the results show how good he is.

Rogues run was very similar to Byun's in a lot of ways. Rogue was known for his online (ladder) prowess for a long time, but was only able to really bring that into tournament success a couples of months before the WCS finals.

Congratulations Rogue. Very well deserved.

After seeing his win, I discover how resemble his WCS finals run compared to Byun's last year run. They both qualified at the latest tournament of the year, beating sOs to qualify for the spot. Coming to WCS finals, they both lose to a foreigner, but survive the group in the second place. Till the final, they overcome Korean top players in each race.

He lost? lol. Rough. Tuned out after Rogue lost that third game due to attacking into a better concave but had a feeling before the games that soO won't disappoint either. Damn, must be heartbreaking to always lose in the finals but it's somewhat odd and funny in its own way too. Hopefully it doesn't dampen his spirit!

Would you check the news after the FIFA world cup final is on? Would you check the FIFA website and then be angry that you found out who won?

I just cannot fathom what goes through their head.

What is even more funny is that there is a box below these previews that says "Hide Spoilers".

Well thats good to know, I am new here so I wasn't aware of that fact. Well no point watching the finals now

Edit: FvRGg I wasn't aware that the games were already played, I came on to look at the calendar on the right-hand side of TL. Also, some other places do regularly use spoiler free titles so I (wrongly) assumed that to be the case.

While I rooted for SoO and I'm sad for him, I really have to give all respects and congratulations to Rogue. He played soooo well and he clearly outclassed soO especially in the final game. He played better in every aspect in that last game - macrowise, in the engagements and strategically he was ahead the whole time.

@pinkbowtie1
Go watch the finals anyway. It's worth it. Have fun

@spoiler topic
Stop being angry at people don't knowing about the "hide spoilers" feature. It's really well hidden itself and many casual TL-visitors or new people to the scene never heard of this setting. Perhaps it would be better to implement a "spoilerwall" on TL.net which asks you if you want to hide spoilers when visiting TL.net for the first time.
Furthermore, I consider that some kind of Code A must be reestablished.

Damn soO...I feel so sorry for this guy...

But from the other hand, I feel like he shouldn't be ashamed. Another second place, yeah, but not without hell of a fight, and it's still a lots of money 140k, that should give him space to compete next year.

To be honest, new balanace changes will shake the scene much i feel. Hope that soO will embrace that just as Rogue embraced LOTV. This new design is a great chance for players like soO.

Rogue is now on fire. I really feel that soO lost the finals to the best player out there at this moment. Nithing to be ashamed of.

So at this point how much money has soO won off of second place finishes?

Serious question here, he must be one of the highest paid Starcraft players ever and yet most of that is off of second placings. I don't know how you can seriously want to retire when that is the case? i mean yea it sucks to lose but its not like he ISNT a successful progamer.

14th highest earning SC2 player in terms of tournament winnings with US$318,495.

Of which:

- $140K from this Blizzcon 2nd place (~43.96%)
- $81,138 from 6x GSL Code S 2nd place (~25.48%)
- $9,000 from 2nd place at IEM GamesCom and DH Stockholm 2014 (~2.83%)
- $4,598 from 2nd place in Liquipedia Major events VSL Season 2 and Master's Colliseum (~1.44%)

Ignored less significant events than those.

With Blizzcon: $234,736 (~73.7%)
Without Blizzcon: $94,736 (~29,74%)

soO and 2-4 in a grand final, name a more iconic duo.

You could see his mind rumbling after the 2-1... changing his playstyle and after the 2-2 it became more obvious that the mental blockade came back. Time to get a sports psychologist.

Nice writeup.

I'm a big fan of both soO and Rogue so happy either way but it was a bit sad to see soO panic in the last game and go in with his corruptors without presplitting them against that many infestors. If only he would have split I believe he would have won that fight and possibly the game. He was so patient until that one moment where he lost it

let's be honest, do you think Soo really has a chance in bo5 against guys like Inno, TY or herO ? He just faced 2 foreigners in group stage then the weakest Korean then another walk-over foreigner in semi.
I blame the bo3 format in ro16 that leads to so many embarrassing semi-finals like Soo vs Special and Dark vs Elazer last year. Seriously, having foreigners in ro4 Blizzcon just lower the qualities of the games. They are only good enough for group stage and ro8, no more.

soO...........Oh well.

Still a great year of starcraft. TY is making a great story for himself and making all the dosh while Special and other foreigners putting up a much better performance. Congratz to Rouge and thanks for Jin Air's continued contribution to starcraft.

Now I can't wait to see how the new patch going to change things lol.

The fact that even the community PR had him as weakest player shows that that was the consensus.
Doesn't necessarily mean it's true but he was viewed as the weakest player by most people.

Either soO or TY would have been a good narrative, but Rogue just went "Nope!" Honestly TY should have won 3-0 against Rogue but he threw game 3 away by clowning around (6 EBays at one point?) and then just lost control of the series. A TY vs. soO finals was what a lot of people were hoping for after the Ro8.

I felt for soO after the two ling rush games. First Rogue does it and wins, then soO does it and loses. That's two points to Rogue in 10 minutes.

I can understand why people think soO winning would have been a good narrative even if I don't agree, but how would TY winning would have been a good narrative? He had a pretty decent 2016 and had won a boatload of money already in 2017. Do you really think "good player wins a boatload of cash" is a good narrative?

Not sure what luck are you talking about.

It was not a meme at all. Just a (legitimate) reaction to SoO's ninth 2nd place in Premier, a fact that has nothing to do with bracket luck or Rogue's superior play.

Serious question here, he must be one of the highest paid Starcraft players ever and yet most of that is off of second placings. I don't know how you can seriously want to retire when that is the case? i mean yea it sucks to lose but its not like he ISNT a successful progamer.

Looks like he's made somewhere around $264,980 from big tournaments

All things considered, Aligulac rate him as the 14th most paid.

A TY vs. soO finals was what a lot of people were hoping for after the Ro8.

I can understand why people think soO winning would have been a good narrative even if I don't agree, but how would TY winning would have been a good narrative? He had a pretty decent 2016 and had won a boatload of money already in 2017. Do you really think "good player wins a boatload of cash" is a good narrative?

If TY won Blizzcon 2017 it would have made him the highest earning player in SC2, passing MVP. TY also said that he's thinking of retiring in his intro vid, like soO it would have been a capstone to a long career.

Five points from this year and five pointers for next year:

1) Nathanias made a great couch controller.
2) All races made a comparable stretch into bracket based on original proportions.
3) FREE TO PLAY HYPE!!!
4) Most of the stuff was free to watch in 720p on Twitch. (Still, the # of people mistaking 5 ARMY for 5 APM were hilarious)
5) Special giving Stats a run for his money!!!!

1) Next year, please change the format to:
RO 16: 4 Groups, BO5, double-elimination
RO 8: 2 Groups, BO5, double-elimination
Semifinals - Finals: BO 7
2) Next year, please rescale the prizepool (see previous post about skew). It's already a generous hunk of $$$ so this doesn't matter as much as it might otherwise.
3) Casting ethos, part A: I can't believe casters failed to mention how many 2-3 reverse sweeps TY has been through this year. I want informed casters who will share useful stuff.
4) Casting ethos, part B: I don't care if soO has lost 7 finals. It's unacceptable to talk about a player just through that kind of lens. Winning/Losing is 10% of the game. Content is 90%. What I heard this year is the equivalent of everytime you talk to a disabled person, only talking about their disability. Not OK. {If you're reading this, soO, I believe in you still. You have the best ZVP in the world!!!}
5) Mr. sound person......... pls balance the audio.

The Swarmhost is possibly OP in one match up if their opponent uses one style. The reaper was broken in both TvZ and TvT.

The fact that they were all openly rooting for soO was much worse from an ethical perspective. They didn't even try to give an equal amount of time talking about both players they were talking about soO so much.

No, it's sad but also funny in an odd way. I don't foresee soO winning a finals at this point. 9 2nd place finishes must really hurt quite a bit. Would be better for him to actually just take a break now and then come back refocused.

Rogue was clearly the superior player in their games, should've been obvious by how he went about doing business. I think soO surpassed Yellow's Kong record haha.

I would be okay with Rogue winning BlizzCon if only he didn't face soO in the finals. I know it's not fair to talk more about the player that lost than about the actual champion, but hell, it's impossible to NOT talk about soO at this point. I was so said about the finals and saw Rogue as a sort of villain that didn't allow soO to have finally accomplish his incredible story. If soO wasn't in the finals, it would be fantastic story for Rogue - qualified for the last minute, going from the 8th spot of WCS Korea, coming second out of his group, have to beat all three races to get the title... My rational me knows all of that and knows that I should be celebrating Rogue (as he really was a better player in the finals), but emotional me just says "fuck this guy, he destroyed one of the best possible stories that could be made on BlizzCon."

Also it was unfortunate that the finals ended up with ZvZ. It's perhaps the worst mirror to watch nowadays, basically any other matchup would be better for the finals. Of course it's just my opinion, but I know many people that feel it the same way (some of my friends even didn't watch the finals just because of ZvZ, they ended up with the semifinals). Plus the fact that there was only one Protoss in the whole playoff bracket didn't help with the variety of the matches played. Hope next year will be better in this aspect.

TY is often viewed as an incredibly smart and underrated player who, although has been a progamer for over a decade, hasn't tasted sweet championship success until this year.

My heart really sank for him after he lost the GSL finals against Zest a couple of years back. Lots of people would have loved to see him win Blizzcon, myself included.

Me too, I think he was a clear favourite coming into Blizzcon. He had just won his 2 prior tournaments in a similar fashion to ByuN last year winning GSL and then Blizzcon. Maybe in the masses he was slightly overshadowed by INnoVation fan boys, but I don't think it's fair to say that INnoVation was in the best shape, he did have perhaps the strongest year though.

I think we're way beyond this point, but perhaps being second at having the most second places, makes you the real true Kong. Which means your not the kong, which means.. wait..

The way I see it is that this way we get to have two stories. Whereas with SoO winning it would be ending a story.

If soO wins blizzcon he retires afterwards, maybe the same with TY; so in a way im happy that soO failed so we can have a chance to see him playing next year but I know that's a selfish though.

It's been two days, and I'm still wondering why soO didn't make 3-4 mutas with his spires. He had the money. I know it's a huge investment and Rogue had a growing army. But he could have sniped so many overlords, thus preventing the drops.
If he was planning on not using it, it would have been better to cancel it.
Really, that got me tilted during the game. I saw the spire finish, all the overlords on the map, and I thought that this was so good for him.

It doesn't matter because soO didnt tech up his air attack or armor. Also, he didn't focus on other tech. He wasn't ready for the late game. Rogue, on the other hand, was getting infestors, and getting 3-3 for air way before he engaged soO.

Even if soO made mutas, Rogue's hydras (3-3) plus infestors will wipe them out easily

I think soO had a chance after the big battle where Rogue pushed into soO's base with BL/Corrupter/Viper/Hydra/Infestor. After the fight ended, soO had 6k/6k bank to remax with mass muta while Rogue didn't have much anti air. Even if Rogue remakes a bunch of Hydra/Infestor, soO could have bought some time by harrassing the shit out of Rogue's bases and also picking off stray hydras and infestors

Map 5 was really unlucky for soO. Or was it map 4? Close spawns on a 4 player map with your opponent scouting you first. I really hate 4 player maps, because its like a coinflip.

I really hope that there will be 16 participants in the next WCS global finals based on points they earned without the division between world and Korea.
Having a week to practice against certain opponents there's still only 2 out of 8 non-Koreans who advance further.
And we all saw what happened to Major in Ro4. Easy win for soO.

Basing things purely on points earned doesn't make any sense whatsoever since Korea and the world play in different tournaments...

The separation is a must nowadays anyway, but it has to be more based on the skill. 10:6 for Korea seems much more fair. It's just 2 spots taken away from foreigners and that sounds to me generous, even 12:4 would be fine, but also very harsh.

With Korea locked away there's no way how to decide who qualifies and who doesn't purely based on points.

Actually the best way would be a 12 set spots(8K+4F) and a tournament for the last 4 spots between top16 foreigners and top16 Koreans. Or top20 vs top12 because more Koreans got the set spot and Koreans have better chance of taking the spots anyway, this way some random foreigner hero can appear and save the galaxy. They would have a chance, we would have a tourney, top12 would get the preparation needed. There are many options but in the end it's all about money.

Honestly - the best possible option(IMO) - if Blizzard gets enough money through microtransactions *cough* free to play *cough* instead of giving more money to top players how about we would get more players into the tourney?

they should have 32 slots instead of 16. and group stages should be BO5 instead of BO3 to eliminate variance. major did well, but would he have beaten TY in a BO5? then the foreigner spots wouldn't have been as big of a deal

The best solution is to revert to pre-LotV region lock and WCS Global finals format except make the semis bo7.

They need to keep it to the Top 16 for the playoffs. But instead of the ridiculous Group Play that they've had the last 2 years (just can't stand it) they need to go back to the bracket style (which they've done before) where the weekend before Blizzcon they hold the Round of 16. 4 Matches on Friday and the other 4 on Saturday. Then everything remains the same (with Quarters, Final Four and Final at BlizzCon).
I think for the tournament until the Semi's it should be Bo5. The Semi's and the Grand Final should be Bo7
As for the #'s from each region that should be in the Playoffs, I also believe that they should take the Top 10 from Korea and the Top 6 from the WCS Circuit (and this is being generous to the WCS Circuit).

He may have gotten second again......but he gets first place for always having his head high and trying again.

Like Sylvester Stallone quoted "Let me tell you something you already know. The world ain't all sunshine and rainbows. It's a very mean and nasty place, and I don't care how tough you are, it will beat you to your knees and keep you there permanently if you let it. You, me, or nobody is gonna hit as hard as life. But it ain't about how hard you hit. It's about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward; how much you can take and keep moving forward. That's how winning is done!"
