Greetings, commanders!
We’re off to a great start in 2017 with StarCraft II. On the esports side, GSL is well underway in Korea, the massive WESG tournament wrapped up in China, NationWars just completed, IEM Katowice is around the corner, and SHOUTcraft Kings is kicking off. Speaking of SHOUTcraft, we just added a TotalBiscuit announcer pack in the last patch, and more co-op content is on the way, including missions, commanders, and the leaderboards feature.
We wanted to give an update on the War Chest, which we announced back at BlizzCon. The War Chest is a limited time in-game event that will allow StarCraft II players to buy-in and gain access to unlockable content like skins, digital comics, and more. The more you play, the more content you get access to. We currently plan on the first War Chest to be made available in Q3 of this year. A portion of proceeds from that War Chest season will go toward increasing the prize pool for the 2017 WCS Global Finals over the base prize pool of $500,000.
We plan on sharing much more information about War Chest later this year, as we draw closer to the release of the program. Source: https://us.battle.net/forums/en/sc2/topic/20753085101

"will go toward increasing the prize pool for the 2017 WCS Global Finals" I always thought it increased the prize pool of the WCS Championships, not the Global Finals. EDIT: wow, first warchest until Q3, no wonder it is for the Global Finals. That is so late!

sorry but.. what does mean Q3? :$

Quarter 3 of the year, so the months 6-9 basically.
|
I thought it was no later than Q2, or do i remember what they said wrong? The fact that it's only for the global finals really sucks but better than nothing i guess
|
Nice, we get compendiums.
LET'S GOOOO!
|
at least they do something even if its kinda late . Hope for 2018 we can buy for wcs 2018 prizepool/ other events . And
|
Q3 wtf
I really hope they come out with some separate stuff before then.
|
Hmmm... This seems like a substantial change from the way they talked about it to us at Blizzcon. My understanding was that there would be a warchest for each season in addition to something special for the finals. Or at least that's how I remember it being described to us by Blizzard folks while we were at the event. Maybe there was a change of plans or maybe my memory is just incorrect.

"A portion of proceeds from that War Chest season will go toward increasing the prize pool for the 2017 WCS Global Finals over the base prize pool of $500,000"
WHAT portion? 50%? 25%? 0,000005%?

Disappointing to say the least. Can anybody who plays heroes tell us if they are that slow with skins, etc there as well? Everything concerning sc2 seems so half-assed tbh. Yes there are some highlights like TB's voice pack, but even there it looks rather like the achievement of TB and not so much like blizzard doing a good job tbh.

For adding new features that require programming etc like this, yeah I think the argument can be made that Heroes has felt slow. I think that's the issue here is that they don't just have to make the content, like have their artists make the skins and portraits, but they've also gotta write new code and make new UI's to implement the war chest idea. They probably consider their deadline as being in time reasonably before the global finals this year and they're planning to use all that time.

I doubt it, but it would be cool for Blizzard to release some statistics on how many war chests were bought. We can probably extrapolate some of this from how much over $500k the prizepool turns out to be.

Well but it's not just the war chest now tbh, i understand that this requires more work than adding a few skins. But we didn't really get much microtransactions in the past few months. (specifically talking about things you can use on ladder) I think it's not too harsh to say that blizzard is really slow here.

Actually people are, overall, quite happy with HOTS devs. Compared to the rest of their games, this one looks like it being developed by a different company.

At the very beginning it didn't seem to be interesting to me after playing lol and a bit of dota2 But yeah in general i am really disappointed with blizzard. For all the love OW gets i simply cannot see why. Their take on ctf is horrible, i cannot see how it took them so long to release such a bad version of it.

So, when is blizzard going to stop the bs and say they actual value for portion?
|
I'm looking forward to WarChest!
+ Show Spoiler +Just to add some positivity here...

Exciting, but kinda sad they are still so far away I want my war chests nowwwwww :D

I believe that was the plan after they get the first War Chest implemented, which was going to take the longest time to get implemented anyways.

good lord is the headcount for sc2 division in the single digits or something
|
I seriously don't care about skins, portraits, voice packs and such in games, but for some reason I buy almost everything that Blizzard releases for SC2. Like Blizzcon portraits that I bought for all 3 accounts that I own. In my opinion Blizzard is doing really good job with it.
I am disappointed that I have to wait until Q3 (I hoped that all Blizzard organized WCS events will have their own War Chests!), but I will definitely buy at least one War Chest. Depending on the price, maybe one for each account I own.

Well I guess it's good we still get it this year...

It's simple, if you want to be able to make the difference all by yourself(aka farm until you can crush almost whole enemy team alone) then this is not a game for you. But since beginning they have changed the game a lot, and it is better and better after each patch with tons of stuff, easy way to grind gold, heroes are quite diverse and updated frequently, new heroes are quite more complex by design than older heroes and each of older heroes is getting reworked(most of them are already reworked).
So, you should give it a try if you like a non-farming type of game where you focus on the objectives and team fighting more.

We Dota 2 now!! :D Good signs though keep improving the game Blizzard

A bit more and they could have announced it at next Blizzcon instead!
Too bad, I was looking forward to this in hope it could increase seasonal tournaments, not only the final.
|
Pretty disappointed that this is coming on Q3, I hope the quality of what we get is worth the wait.
|
I suppose Q3 is better than Soon, eh.
|
I appreciate the efforts but I am really doubtful about skins being the way to draw more players to the game. Let's see how this plays out.

Well i like to have some control myself, which is why i like starcraft so much (and prefer csgo to other team games because you have a bigger impact there as well). So it's probably still not for me. But yeah at the beginning heroes felt kinda boring and even though there was a lot of teamfighting it never felt all that tense or exciting imo. Good that they improved that aspect!

Maybe that's just the start of the first one, and from that point on it will be like you described.

It feels more like an effort to retain existing players through the War Chest's progression system, monetary/time investment into getting the cosmetics, and crowdfunding for the WCS prizepool.
One way it could draw new players is to tie ladder access to its purchase.

Is that how they break it up? Q1 where I'm at starts in August (Mainly important since that's the deadline for closing budgets and waiting for new budget approvals), which means our Q3 is closer to the beginning of spring.

Out of context or as they said 'Q3 of this year', mostly refers to the straight forward quarter of the civil year. Many companies have different quarter though (typically for budgets reasons as you mentioned), but those are the common ones.

Huh, never realized that--always thought they meant their own quarter and not annual quarter.
