Regardless of the situation, we will still action upon "dead game" comments. As this is a sensitive issue for SC2 fans, please do not come into this thread and talk about SC2 players switching over to BW. This thread is also not about bashing Blizzard, David Kim, or the WCS system. |
Why don't they just switch back to BW? It obviously is on the rise again. Or are there legal issues?
However: while overall this may be sad news, I am somewhat happy. The joy of watching and playing SC2 was declining for me for a while now. There are so many things in its (unit and game) design that just make it frustrating to play sometimes. Too many mechancis that made an inferior player win by pulling of his one well hidden trick or so. Balancing the game around that 0.01% that "can actually play it" made it a competitive esport game, but it also made it more and more frustrating. If GSL and others would announce their disontinuation I would be rather happy, I wouldn't have to care about it (the game) anymore at all.
Learning new builds, analyzing my errors in the replay, improving myself, learning timings and counters... it was a fun time for 6 Years now, but it was also so frustrating that I uninstalled the game several times. Especially when I played Terran against Protoss, and I watched the replay, was in the lead all game and lost because of a single mistake... made me wanna puke and go back to BW. It seemed more skill, and less luck-based.
I hope the rumors about a BW-HD-Remake are true and we will have some awesome content in the future. Many companies (Afreeca, Gom, Proleague...) invested a lot in SC2, I guess if they decide it has to come to an end, it is for a reason

This worst thing I've heard in a really long time. Thanks to kespa and thanks to all the TL articles about their events.

I had some planes to visit Korea... everything is destroyed. I started to play the SC 1 back in the games and I loved the game. A Blizzard RTS was so much funnier than a fps-game back in those days. Been continue to follow SC2 scene when It came in the summer of 2010. What can take up my time now...

I could barely watch every sc2 professional tournament anyway (and I spend a lot of time doing this). I have to check that chinese team league, maybe it's good.

I haven't watched Proleague for 2 years now but it was the most interesting league I have ever watched.

As a Korean fan, I can't say I didn't see this coming. People have been calling SC2 "the dead game (좆망겜)" in Korea for years. Viewership and ladder players have been increasingly isolated, turning the scene into a kind of Galapagos with no influx of new players.
There have long been hints on the Korean community that KeSPA was having trouble renewing their sponsorship contract. From what I understand, the final nail in the coffin seems to have been the matchfixing scandal - sponsorship for SC2 have been on shaky grounds for quite a while, and after the matchfixing incident the big companies lost any justification to continue.
That said, seeing this news today still makes me feel like I've been punched in the gut. I really fucking loved the Korean SC2 community. The Korean fans still sticking around by HotS were a loyal, tight-knit bunch, true fans of the SC2 scene. They were the crowd that turned up to fill the stands at the Proleague and GSL and SSL finals. They would tune in to every game and crack jokes about the players and admire their gameplay and make gifs of the best engagements. They would make maps and hold community tournaments and write fan fiction. I'd even go so far as to say that we had a culture and a lore that was continued from the BW days.
We also had the privilege of having casters, program directors, and other professionals who loved the Korean scene and its lore, and really enjoyed connecting with their fans.
It was such a blast being part of the Korean SC2 scene - I don't think anything else will be quite like it. Proleague was the last thing holding it together, as well as being a tradition in its own right. This really feels like the end of Starcraft for me.

Hopefully the Starcrafts mod can reinvigorate the sc2 hype tsunami, like Jesus did Lazarus.
Find new sponsors to make this big, I'm thinking jails .. forcing juvenile delinquents to play it relgiously as part of their rehabilitation

SC2 has been dead for a long time. It has tons of flaws and is in general just horrible compared to brood war. Glad to see this game coming to an end, so that more and more focus will go back to BW both in Korea and in EU/NA.

BW in Korea maybe. In NA/EU no way. Separate history here. Korea is about OW and LoL nowadays.

Not too happy about LoL (at least play Dota) but OW really hurts, such an unimpressive game to be good at.

since proleague is done i guess there's no harm in saying that i was actually in discussion with kespa last year about creating an improved FPL with their help, which would also allow korean fans to play and compete with fans on TL. would have been great to bridge the gap between the two sets of fans. they were really excited about it and they really wanted to make it a big part of the proleague experience, which shows that kespa really did try to keep proleague going and were still searching for ways to improve it. unfortunately when the matchfixing scandals hit that pretty much nixed the deal completely.

Harsh for all the korean progamers on SC2 . Good luck to them for the future.

remember, its korea's fault for not having interest enough in sc2 for the sponsors. thats the only allowed reason on here, okay?
