I will be updating the Competitive League and Ladder Guide shortly with this new information, but I wanted to give a quick rundown of how to read the new ladder. I created a new account on SEA just to try things out.
I went 3-2 in my placements. MMR is not visible during Placement. I got placed in Silver. If we hover over the ? button next to League Promotion Progress, we get a lot of cool information:
You can see in the screenshot that I had 3740 MMR. On the SEA server, Silver 1 spans 3146 to 3320 MMR. So why am I in a lower league?
Answer: Provisional MMR. To ensure that the matchmaker doesn't inadvertently put you in too high a league or tier (remember, demotions are still disabled during a season, so that could have been possible), you are given a provisional MMR. This isn't new to the 3.4 ladder, it's always been there. Blizzard has called it the "New Player" logic, I called it the "rating calibration phase". You can see in the screenshot that my provisional MMR is 3227, right within the Silver 1 range. The provisional period lasts for 25 games and inhibits promotions.
And then sometimes you get funny things happening like this:
I don't know where it's pulling -7 MMR from. Obviously a display bug though.

The order goes 3, 2, 1, so that would be a promotion to Gold. It would probably be pretty handy if they added badges on both sides of the bar to make that clearer!
e: Misunderstood your question. The bar applies to your current tier and not your overall league. If I were in Silver 2 then the bar would represent the gap between Silver 2 and Silver 1, not Silver and Gold.
They should really do something about how they display provisional MMR; it's only going to cause confusion as is. Maybe have a message with it that says something along the lines of "(estimate only. XX more games needed for an accurate score)"
I believe from a fresh start 25 games are needed. It will probably be easier to confirm this now.

it's a huge number. I expected something more chess like, 1000ish for bronze players, 2000+ for masters and 3000+ for GMs.
Ya I was sad to see that once you leave the score summary screen you can no longer get back to it. I also noticed last night that you don't get to see your opponents tier as the game is loading.

We're talking about Blizzard entertainment here. As someone who designs software, you'd think they'd have a bunch of end users involved closely in the development process to ensure stuff like this doesn't happen, but... agile techniques haven't exactly made their way to Blizzard.

But do we have the capacity to see the distance between Silver and Gold in their case? As someone who has multiple master's trophies and wins on ladder but stuck in diamond, I've been curious for years how far I am away from getting the damn promotion

Not until that information is crowdsourced. You'd have to ask someone who's in Diamond 1.

Because the right people just aren't there yet.
Yeah or they just adapted it to actual consumer demand that didn't want to be stalked or had ladder anxiety, just as they said in their AMA
But your agil brain must have seen that already...

Sounds like your MMR carried over =) Still Grandmaster strength!

5300 is pretty low, guitarcheese hasn't played in three seasons and got 5800. I think you'd do fine at 5300

not so far but maybe i started off unlucky. still, i'll survive and turn it around soon enough. 5800 and that out of shape is gonna be really rough
just played my placement match.. post screen said my mmr is 4800 somewhat.. can someone explain to me why it says my mmr is 23 when i go to my profile? everyone elses mmr gets displayed correctly in the high 4k area, only me and very few other have 2 digits mmr? why is that? thanks.

I've got the same problem for whatever reason. Displayed MMR is 16.

Yea, I don't see why I can't simply go to my last match and click on the ladder/experience button. Maybe because then you'd be able to go into other profiles' last matches to see their MMR, thus infringing on privacy? What's the worse that could happen... someone teasing me about my low MMR? Have we gotten that soft ffs.
On July 13 2016 23:41 paralleluniverse wrote: Does it exactly take 25 games to make your MMR non-provisional? Or is it based on the MMR uncertainty and 25 is just an approximation?
According to http://us.battle.net/sc2/en/blog/18792768/starcraft-ii-ladder-update-april-27-2015-4-27-2015 under "New Player" Logic, it's "around" 25 games. 25 may be an upper limit (and this is consistent with when skeldark and Not_That would see league changes in the old MMR-Stats tool) or it may be enforced. Some players have reported that they've been promoted earlier, but they haven't clearly stated whether they had 25 recent career ranked games (say, 15 last season and 10 this season would still be enough to break out of provisional status).
Since this new ladder change, almost all my wins give me less than 10 points (against equal MMR) and I lose tons (-20), so I'm stuck at 13 points with a 13-8 winrate. My MMR should be closer to Master 2 (4800), but I'm stuck at super low Masters 3. What is this all about?
sorry if it has been answered already, but why on some players' profiles I can see their full MMR, means 4 digit number, like 5125 or whatever
but on some other's (including my own profile!) I can only see 2 digit MMR, like 32 or 16? can I somewhat calculate full 4-digit MMR when given only this 2 digit one? Right now I cannot even compare my own MMR to others, is it a bug that Blizzard is aware of?
Huh, it seems you can be promoted even if your bar is not full... I played 3 games. After i won my first i was put int dia 3 with bar full, and just at the edge of the MMR limit Second match i lost, dropped my bar off some. Thrid match i won, and bam, promotion!
Maybe you don't need to win 2 times in a row to be promoted... The game just checks your MMR?

hasnt been answered yet, i asked the same question above. hopefully someone will know what this is about. its very annoying to me.

Here's some info that might help you:
Monday: create new account, play 20 unranked games, zero ranked games (pre ladder revamp) Tuesday (after ladder revamp): play 25 ranked games - my first four placement games were all against masters (!!!), which means your unranked MMR must be used to decide who you play in your placement games, fifth game was vs a diamond - after placement, I was at roughly 4900 MMR, I believe, and got placed in Diamond 1 with a provisional MMR of around 4300ish I think - after my 24th game (19-5) I got promoted to Master 3 (at this point had 5228 MMR) - after my 25th game (20-5) I got promoted to Master 1, skipping master 3 (had 5255 MMR)
I haven't played for a while, last season I was gold with barely won games (just a few vs a lot of lost ones)... 3 games and I'm top8 PLAT#1 ... strange.

I played a few team games yesterday, and I got hacked in a game. Watch some people on the right view bar over there, they claim hack at least 1 in 5 games.
Also I am way under my actual league right now, when I take a loss ok no big deal, I am currently like 25-1. When mutas fly into your base, directly to your upgrade buildings, kill off each building in the order of closest upgrade to being completed, skip killing probs when your stalkers are about to blink on them, off vision. Something there smells like fresh hacks to me.

Damn that smells like a hack. Post up your replay in the GM/Master hacking thread and let others see too.
So it says that if that bar runs out I run the risk of being demoted next season. So if I'm in diamond 1 I could get demoted to diamond 2 or does it mean I get demoted to platinum?

The progress bar operates only in terms of the nearest neighbor (that is, by tier), so the demotion would be from Diamond 1 to Diamond 2.

That's interesting. I watch some of the people on that right bar there and the ones I watch claim those who complain about hacks are usually making excuses for their losses and that hacking actually rarely occurs.
The story you share sounds compelling though, video please.
