Just did the mastery achievement on this. Took me a while, but it was a lot easier after stealing the zerg gas geysers.
I just made a bunch of tanks and vikings, and built a few PF's on the terran and protoss entrances. Mech upgrades are important as well. I realized that marines + bio upgrades are not affordable. Kerrigan ended up with ~12 kills I think.
Challenge for anyone out there: complete this missions on hard with only killing the trashers with kerrigan. I think it's possible, but the two BC's on Artanis' base early on were essential kills for me.

Done Neither tanks nor mass marines worked for me on this one, but I was able to do this with one with spectres and mineral dump marines. Permacloak spectres are insane. They're basically free dps - the only threat to them is sieged tanks, colossi and the stray banelings, there is literally no enemy detection in this mission. Use stun on groups, the 200 damage nuke on any heavy targets and you're golden. I did pick off the BCs without any spells though - just send the few (around 8 or so) spectres you can get off a single reactored rax by the time they come to the spot where they stop before the attack, and they just disappear. You can rotate them from base to base quite easily as well. Keep a bunch (5 or so) at each entrance.
I'd also advise everyone to send out a few stimmed rines early, there's a bunch of mineral\gas pickups that really helps in the early game. One of note is one gas and one mineral + gas to the north of the northern entrance to your own base, on two sides of a bunch of rocks. It's hidden in the void fog thingy, but it deals little damage early game.

I watched this mission on youtube and it seemed brutal even on hard. I was thinking liberator but has anyone tried that? Are they even available?

Is it possible to get the purity of purpose achievement by ks'ing Kerrigan?

I've tried this mission 8 times on Hard diff. Followed every strat in this thread. Still can't beat it.
Will have to bump down to normal I guess, though I hate to do it.
Just quietly I think the last of the Zeratul WoL missions was harder than the final mission on Char. Terran with the right upgrades made it super easy to hold out.

Mass tanks and make sure to prioritize your own base and artanis. Use kerrigan's laser a lot. You should eventually get a bunch of tanks for zagara. If you need to, mass buildings around kerrigan before the final wave to buy time. I didnt need to do that to win but i needed to do that to get the life guard achievement.

i hate this mastery achievement. it's the last one i have left.

FE to natural. Build second starport immediately. Start massing banshees. 1-2 science vessel for repair. Wall of initial attack gate. Wall off the other side with another PF adjacent to FE one. Start adding vikings to the bunch. Keep building banshee (priority) + viking + science vessel (5-6 should do). Do armory upgrades. Use cloack for the initial waves. Build 1-2 PF to Artanis side if you can, just to delay while the banshee + viking ball arrives. Use Kerrigan ability for Battle Cruisers and Carriers or whatever you find necessary.
Once the banshees reach critical mass, rest is quite trivial.

yes. I finally made the mastery achievement with this method.

I got very confused as to why i was playing as Terran in this mission lol xD
But its fun and challenging, been so long since we played terran campaign so i was a bit slow on this.

I just did this method too, it was the only way I could beat the damn mission. Sadly I was 200 health under the value for the regular achievement so I'll have to try again at some point

So here's a bigger challenge. Beat this mission on hard with Kerrigan killing only the first two void thrashers before you control the terran base. Would this be possible on brutal? Edit: I think spectres may also be able to snipe off thrashers.

I'm going to attempt this (without spectres).

I think the first thrasher (after you get the terran base of course) would be hard since that's when you start. I think it'll be hard to get enough banshees by then. Maybe use ground forces (infantry with medics and starting tank?) for it? Can you get merc banshees before the first thrasher?
Also, I think it'll be hard when they send 3 thrashers at once. Nvm, you might be able to split your banshees into 3 fairly large groups by then.

Do they run out of ideas how to make good difficult missions? I thought i was done with these after the last campaign mission.. Always liked holdout missions. Two of my favorite SC1 missions are the one where you defend for 30 minutes as Terran, and the one where you capture the Xel'Naga temple and sit on it for 15 minutes. I love shoring up defenses and seeing how good they are.

I did it on hard using banshees, vikings and tanks. They are great at sniping trashers. I'm going to attempt it on brutal, but I fear it will be impossible. 3 trashers never occured as far as I remember. Perhaps it happens at a later stage, which does not happen when celestial beam is not used. It does pause the timer whenever you use it. I didn't think of the mercs this time, might be useful for brutal.

Yep, that's true. I did get 98.6% on brutal without using kerrigan, so I'd say it's definitely possible. But it will take a lot of practice to do this without loading. I'll try and get it later.

Failed this mission a number of times on brutal, i was simply unable to save the zerg and the protoss early on, while buidling up the scv-count and the upgardes at the same time.
Thank you for pointing out, that medics auto-heal the zergs, it made the difference, after the intial phase it's quite easy, once the +3 upgrades kick in it's GG
i was sitting on over 10k minerals and 200/200 for the last minutes

I did manage not to use kerrigan except for the two initial void trashers on brutal. So it's definitely possible, although I had to load a bunch of times. The time 21:41 is probably the optimal speed of this mission.

Too bad it's not an achievement!
