We invited Ryan Schutter, the creator of the popular GameHeart overlay, to come and collaborate with the StarCraft development team here at Blizzard’s headquarters. For years, Ryan has been on the forefront of making the StarCraft spectating experience as good as possible for viewers, and we wanted to both recognize his hard work and join forces as we improve the World Championship Series.
Previously, GameHeart has been used at non-WCS events, and viewers let us know that they really want to see some of the GameHeart features when they tune into the WCS. In response to that feedback, we are pleased to announce an official WCS GameHeart overlay, the product of our collaboration is a new version of GameHeart that will be used for WCS events. The overlay will also be available to anyone who wants to use it for any other StarCraft broadcast. This original GameHeart overlay is still available and Ryan is welcome to keep developing new features for the non-WCS version.
Ryan has been diligently working on updating the existing mod while our Blizzard engineers have been providing support through minor coding changes to help improve how GameHeart functions. Stay tuned for a rundown of features as we get nearer to the completion of our partnership.
As we continue to explore ways to bring more eSports support and functionality into the StarCraft II game client, we believe that it’s vital to focus on what players and viewers want and expect from the game. Our thanks go out to the passionate StarCraft community for their feedback and support of the scene.
about time no i mean its super nice to see, ofc blizzard has skilled programmer, but he sees whats GOOD and not whats possible ^^ his work is amazing and this will be so nice xD

I don't think the creator of Gameheart can be compared to Blizzard's programmers. To put it simply, they probably use different tools. Blizzard's programmers are concerned with internals not so much with maps/mods.
I can't stand the stronger team colors. Was it GameHeart that was used at the most recent DreamHack? I thought the interface information was way too small (units, production, upgrades, etc..) I really hope I don't have to stare at that again.

No accounting for taste.
Strong colours should be standard across the board, particularly good for casters, not to mention allowing viewers to more easily distinguish units on screen, particularly on lower-res streams.
I am super happy for Ryan, but overlay viewing comfort is not a weak point of sc2. If you compare it with any other rts out there it is simply the best there is.

When strong colors was introduced there was many people, myself included, that didn't like it and thought it went over the top. As for the UI, you want to reduce screen clutter from all the information (supply, production, upgrades, etc..) but what DreamHack just recently used was way to tiny in my opinion. You shouldn't have to strain to see the information when in fullscreen mode. I have nothing against the layout of the UI my main concerns are the size and stronger colors.

Dreamhacks setup is non-standard, that's up to their designers to sort out. The Gameheart 1v1 interface which everyone else uses is nothing like that and the sizing is absolutely fine.
As for strong colours, they aren't going anywhere and thank god for that, they're really important for viewability.

They could be implemented better on certain units. I very much like them on banelings, for example, but on other units (like the colossus) I just don't like how it looks.
I remember seeing a banner at the bottom of the UI while watching the DH games where logos such as Monster, Need for Seat, etc were displayed 100% of the time.
While I do understand that sponsors are vital, having them in front of your face while you're watching Starcraft is annoying. We have the same single ad being played over and over, constant plugs from casters and product placement everywhere. We even have custom decals built onto the maps, and now banners built into the interface?
Just wait until they start saying that TaeJa is making Monster® Marines or when casters talk about Jaedong's Hyper X® Ling micro.
I'd rather go back to the basic UI if it means they cant put a 30 font Monster logo in the center bottom of the screen 100% of the time.
I hope GSL continue to use whatever they're using. It's by far the best IMO. Resources/supply in the right place, army supply, workers and mineral/gas income are also visible at all times.

That's usually added during the after-production of the game's captured screen image and are not build into the interface nor into the extension mod. It's the same as the whole UI was modified in streams before observer interfaces were added to the game engine.
Therefore, the stream production has full control over that and you would need to talk with the tournaments about that. But they rely on advertisement money to be able to run the whole show, so I don't necessarily blame them until the advertisements are unbearable. Do you remember what has been done before? advertisements left and right to the unit info panel, above the portrait and above the command card (= the ability buttons) and above the observer controls. If you compare that to the modern interfaces, it's still a big difference.

I much rather have visual ads than have the casters plug shit non-stop.
As for the stronger team colors debate, unfortunately I doubt blizzard is going to approve it for WCS. At best we might get things like the com scan graphic being player-colored instead of generic yellow. This collaboration is more likely about things like the recent workers killed pop up and upgrades about to finish pop up.
I like stronger team colors because I have poor vision, and being able to clearly tell a player's units apart from those of their opponent can be a challenge in mirror matchups, especially when the map's tileset is on the darker side.
More importantly, congrats to Ryan Schutter. Demonstrating once again that hard work can pay off.

Yep, on some units it's more or less ok, but some look terrible. Like banelings' color is way too oversaturated. Then again, we're probably the minority so they won't change anything.
In fact I don't like gameheart or any other overlay at all, never had a problem watching any matches with default observer options. Although I also understand why they are needed - to compensate some of observers' mistakes and so they (observers) can pay more attention to what's going on, rather than switching between army/production/etc tabs over and over again.

It's also so you can fit more information on the screen while simultaneously increasing the view of the battlefield by reducing UI space.

I disagree. In mirror match-ups it's wonderful to be able to tell who's forcefield/time warp/scan/baneling is who's.
Fix the red archons(!@#!@!!!@#$!@$!!$@) and I am good with strong colors. I cannot remember how the colossus look, so it is OK. Though I think strong colors should be used ONLY in mirrors. Why do I have to see glowing baneling(no matter how cute it is) when it PvZ or TvZ? I think everybody can tell the difference between red and blue player by, I don't know, race? I know, I know, it's racist ><

It's not because you dunno HOW to do it that you can't say you don't like it. When watching stronger team color i feal the game is cartoony and i don't like it.
But it's true that ling/bling wars are way more visible with it. Abilities in mirrors are really nice (scan color etc... even if it looks funny with some colour) .
But well stc or not i'll watch. The only thing that annoys me a lot is supplies at the bottom at the screen. Because when you play you watch top. And when you look at a tournament you look down.
I don't understand why you would change it at the bottom of the screen.

Embedded Twitch streams (like the ones on TL) have a twitch logo at top right of the player, which covers the supply count.

Because I haven't the skill to do it well, and I haven't the time right now to dedicate to learning to do it well. So instead I voice my opinion in the hopes that someone who has the skill agrees and decides to do something of the sort. If it turns out that I'm in such a minority that nobody bothers, then I can live with that.
