Hi,
I've done a really short webcomic on starcraft a year ago but could not continue it beacause it took so much time to do :C
OLD thread
OLD WEBCOMIC
I have a little update : I've been trying to do comic full time, and worked on the project again to make it edited here in France on paper (so I can get some little money ^^)
Here is the improved version of the project, and there will be no mention to starcraft though it is obviously based on RTS : p

This comic is amazing! Really well done!
|
I have to admit I'm impressed... I wouldn't be surprised to see this highlighted! Interesting to notice how much study there was behind the drawings. + Show Spoiler +Noticed 4 players cameo, am I right?
|
i don't really know much about comics but this looks really good to me. probably would gain more support if your protagonist wasn't Naniwa though.

Well done.. I enjoyed this
|
Good to see that the good guy is terran and his evil opponent is protoss
|
Did I spot a wild ElkY in there?
|
|
Pretty cool, but shouldn't the previous champion already have a progaming license and therefore not be in the same tournament?
|
Not bad, but one major problem: how do you fit in pretty girls into a comic about RTS gaming? I noticed that most of your characters are guys.
[The Japanese avoid this problem by making the game a dating simulation. Unfortunately you can't do that.]

This is sweet, really love the art, thanks for posting!

You could. Halo-style - the girl is AI!

/edit
I like the comic so far but its still a bit too realistic for my taste. We need Yu Gi Oh level of overexageration.
|
I was doubtful at first but that was hella cool :D
|
This is great post! i think it is a good idea, and also include Jaedong he is best gamer world!

i like Emi
cool work bro

No no we need YugiOh.
Also, this is awesome

And holy shit people have a lot of APM in this comic. Probably not Blizzard APMs though :D

Awesome! I PMed you with specific feedback.

To be more detailed, I was imagining the human-body shapes for Y G O. That level of uberexaggeration.

I admit I skimmed a bunch, but its a cool idea.
Remember Death Note, light vs L? Especially the tennis match. That's sort of what makes me think this idea could work.

Nice well done! Will support the project surely

Ok, comic script is perfect nao. E-sports is saved!

Very nice comic! Keep it coming.
|
This is really good work man. I'd gladly read this. Good luck

Looks good! You should think about adding some female characters who aren't reduced to love interests, but otherwise the story seems enticing. : )

Hello,
Drawings and shades are good looking, which makes the reader able to enter easily in the story.
I will follow you but I hope it won't be too linear or Manichean because we could already understand the full story. He will win this set of games without following his coach orders. He will be shy about the girl and will never get her. He will grow strong in the scene but will have to endure defeats that will prove he needs to improve with obvious captions about "never surrender, be the best beat the rest".
Anyways, amaze us, make us dream, poor noobs who have dreamed at some points to be pros :p GLHF!

Pretty awesome! I've had ideas for comics like this too, with a whole plot thought out too. But never had the art skills/motivation to do this. So glad you're doing it though!
|
Thanks everyone for your comments, the difficulty of making comic work is to be motivated to stay steady, and you are really keeping my spirit up : D
Creo> My original plan for the story is as follow : The hero will lose his first match due to poor fundamental skills, he will then get picked up by an amator clan and his mentor will teach him from zero. This arc will explain how to improve in RTS game : p as the hero will go through several different internet cafe of different district of the town, each district will have a specific speciality in strategy ^^
The second arc will focus on the hero getting pro and living the pro gamer life from the inside and his everyday's life struggles. The climax will be the Electronics Olympics where he will face off his long time rival obviously : p and where he will make his 'game breaker' move !
This comic aims to be pretty humoristic though, but I have read (blog from pro gamers) and watch many documentaries on the subject and can play pretty decent (master level) so I hope to make it pretty consistent.
I still think the girl character is difficult to integrated, because the pro gaming world is so harsh and currently barely suit girls at all ... So my girl character will be a little bit ... tomboyish and aims to be the first girl to beat a boy on TV. Thats her part ^^'
Anyway, I'll be posting this project to editors in France, and authors have plenty of freedom to develop their story so I hope to get where I wanna go : p
|
Thanks for the fast answer Nayth!
I was gladly wrong and it then seems much more interesting than I imagined! I guess we could identify very easily with your main character and get entertained while getting hyped for playing our own games!
Good luck for getting in touch with editors, I know how hard it can be... especially on such a specific story! Are you on CaféSalé (http://www.cfsl.net/), some might help you with getting edited.

Matz even looks like Yagami Light

Some weird thing about your plot so far: Need license to play televised matches, Play televised match to win license?...
As For the Characters: Matz, no fan of the name and his design is terrible, he has no edges, he disgusts me, very appalling. Do you know any 13/14 year old, they don't all look like justin bieber or have an asshole attitude.
Kim, my favourite so far, he reminds me of Qxc, nice guy but with angermanagement issues. :D
Kriss does not strike me as a leader, he should be higher ranked, or at least really good looking, or be tall or something.
Emi, no comment yet, she does not emit any personality.
Olfmann, oh man, I love him aswell. Someone to be scared of, would be funny as shit if his personality was the opposite.
Uncle Stan, well, someone like that in "the real" world is not needed. I would give him a worn suit, he should be the manager, organize the team, fail to get sponsors, spend tournament winnings on booze and whores. And why does he look like a zombie, old men lose hair and they dye the rest before they turn 70 to look younger.
As for the gamers, Albert is offputting, he is too comic in my opinion, he most likely will destroy any immersion a ready would build up.
Overall I think your timing is god damn crytal. It's perfect. You should do story boards for movies. Just make sure you stay coherent (license thing, and is matz 13 or 14?), also I would totally advise to rework the main character. Take a young slayers_boxer for example. Esports should also be for the freaks, make him a LOT more edgy please.
|
I like how the 14 year old is described as young man and the guy who is 35 looks like some grandpa. But it does look really good tho.
|
I like the artwork well enough, drifts a bit too far into manga for me personally (just not my cup of tea) but I can see the appeal and direction.
The story feels a bit thin, like there could be some kind of lead up or context given. This could come after this first bit structurally, but just my two cents.
|
It is really nice.
I think you should explain the games specific terms though. Like metagame, APM etc... for exemple, we as gamers know what it is but if you want to spread this it could be nice. For exemple, we all know what a katana and a wakizashi are but it's still explained in every samurai anime we see
|
Wow, really cool! You're getting the vibe just right It's of course a story most of us on this forum can relate to, at least a storyline we all dreamt of once probably haha! Keep going, you have my support! ^__^
|
|
wow! awsome work you did there :D
i hope there will be more of this!
|
Looks great so far!! Keep us informed
I honestly wasn't expecting anything going in but I'm impressed.

This looks cool, my only criticism would be only one female character, and her defining characteristic is "main character is in love with her"
Given that we're trying to branch our hobby out to women in a meaningful way aswell it might be nice if a few of the more important characters were women, or if she had some other function in the narrative than "love interest"
It might sound silly but as a fan of anime, I've found that the under representation of -important- female characters is a reall barrier to a lot of women that might otherwise enjoy the overall narrative of good show's/comics.
I know that in reality there are not that many girl gamers, and the ones that there are are not super l33t for the most part, but if thats something we want to change, a couple of role models in a fictional world might be worth some thought
Looks awesome in general though, great work

Raneth > My english translation of the character description was bit lazy ^^ my original intent was indeed to make her a strong character, even though she may not but the strongest her aim is to become the first female progamer to win a televised match ... but the road will be quite difficult : p
HaRuHi > the model I originally took my main character from was marinking :X a bit arrogant, pretty talented but no discipline ... I thought it was a pretty good beginning to try to mold him a better temper and add in discpline fundamentals to his playstyle.
One thing I found interesting in progamers life is how close it is to artists : )) The ones who are stuck in the middle ranks in term of skill with no team support (editor, employers) are just screwed ... it is so competitive, you either try to improve to compete with the best or become just an entertainer ... I kinda relate to pro gamers in a sense ^^' Everybody wants to become one, but once they are on the road the difficulties are overwelming ... I wanted to describe this situation in a second arc !
Thanks for all your comments, it keeps me motivated ^^ bonus picture for you folks : p

Hmm, I don't think that level of exaggeration is enough. If anything, it should be Saki-level of exaggeration where every player has some kind of super power for every swipe of the mouse and push of a button :D

Awesome indeed, but why are the players so young? Typical Sc2 player is between 18-26. Oh, and would be cool if you also included EAPM in the "stats" list. I guess that's comparable to NFL stations not just showing a QB's total passing yards, but his QB rating as well.

Why does the main character look like naniwa?
