At the KeSPA pro-gamer education seminar, KeSPA chairman Korean MP Jeon Byung Heon announced that the new StarCraft 2 Proleague would launch in December.
Additionally, players from MVP, Prime and IM were seen at the seminar. With the three teams having left the eSF in September, it appears they are well on the path to joining KeSPA, if not de facto members already.
Also, it was announced that work was being done on a new LoL league outside OGN's Champions, which many speculate to be a LoL Proleague.
Unified SC2 team league would be great, and you'd think there's obvious motivation not to fragment the Korean SC2 scene, but somehow I think that if this really was in the cards you wouldn't have GSTL teams having left piecemeal. You'd just have one final season of GSTL and then transition into the new league.
Though with only a few teams left (and several of them with little/no major sponsors), I wonder how viable GSTL is for 2014 anyway. Anyone heard anything about this? I love GSTL but have a sinking feeling that the more healthy teams remaining (StarTale and AxiomAcer?) may move to Proleague as well if they have a chance to and AZUBU (parent company all but shut down), FXO (losing main sponsor) and SouL (already lost main sponsor) would disband and/or be absorbed by other teams.
I think it would be nice, if GSL focused on individual league while KeSPA focused on team leagues. After all, LoL is a team game, so why not develop a foundation for the SC2 team league?
This is what will happen. There will be one sponsor for SC Proleague and LoL Proleague. SC and LoL matches will be on the same day. SC matches will be the start and after that LoL games will start.

Yeah i thought of that too. But do you think that results from lol will matter in sc2 and vice versa, aka hybrid league?^^ I hope and think thats not the case although it would be kinda interesting Oo
i can't help but think now of blizzards other pending game heroes of the storm, I wonder if it will even be able to gain much traction in korea with lol/sc2 taking centre stage.

would be funny but I dont think so because MVP doesnt have a LoL squad anymore and they said they wont get another one.
I don't know. This might've been a good move a few years back when Kespa was in its prime, but nowadays they are no where near their glory in the past. I mean the Kespa teams Woonjin struggles financially due to the situation of the head sponsor, Soul lost their head sponsor outright, etc.
I feel that if esf and kespa do not merge, esf will be eclipsed eventually. In my opinion the sc2 scene in Korea can't support two separate entities anymore (not basing anything on facts here though).
I would be surprised to see both organisations existing two years from now. We will see.
Oh nice Proleague in December woop. Im looking forward to seeing how MVP IM and Prime will do in it I hope Prime get some new blood though >.< they need it!

I don't think he will stay in SC2, he has been playing LoL for a couple of months now and seemed happy with it in.
Q: Are you considering a come back to SC2 ? For LotV for an example. What change to SC2 would make you come back to the game ? A: I just announced that i quit SC2 so actually i don't know if i will come back. But if the fans are really asking me to make a comeback, maybe i will come back.

Where do I ask him to come back? Does someone check his TL fan site and tells him what the ppl wrote?
Why do I have a feeling, that Prime will be stomped in Proleague. Maru aside they lack depth - unless it will be something like Woongjin Prime. MVP and IM will be, however, glorious!
Such a nice pic of firebathero and coach park at the end there :D
Sounds good, can't wait to get the awesomeness that is pl back. Couldn't care less about the lol part, given that they'll give me the possibility to only watch sc pl.

Yeah they will get stomped no question. But I don't see them playing only as team Prime they might go alliance with another team maybe Woongjin Prime as you said. I could also see IMPrime they have pretty friendly relationship(?)

Well, they seem to have found some b-teamers for themselves. But yeah, probably stars will be playing with another team and consider roster size, it is probably prime.

hope its just the LoL Proleague and they give up and join GSTL and make one individual kespa league. Hey one can dream and I dream of more Khaldor and Wolf casting :p and of more games on Fruitland and their observer UI .
But would be great if the teams will find new sponsors for their Sc2 part or will live of LoL somehow, which is more likely if you stick to the Korean region like Kespa does.

I can confirm that MVP has indeed joined KESPA A deal was reached between the team and the esports organization since september. They're going to announce everything officially around mid november. Proleague is also well funded for all of 2014, possibly 2 seasons.

eSF is looking like it's being left for dead. Considering that, if I recall correctly, KeSPA recently softened their policies, are there any reasons not to create a unified korean organization for SC2/esports?

It's so sad to hear the Soul team was not there. It would have been so fucking nice to see them back in proleague. A dream would have been a stars/soul merge! Seeing both teams have need for more high lvl players. Man it really hurts hearing Soul wont be there...

The problem with the teams as is though is that there is a fairly massive power divide in terms of talent between KT SKT IM MVP and the rest of the proleague. Prime does have Maru and a few very good player so they are probably the 5th best team but those 4 are just far and away outclassing the rest.
Edit: I forgot CJ but I have not been keeping up with them so im not sure where they fall.
Does anyone know how sponsorship money is distributed among KeSPA teams nowadays? Iirc, years ago they changed the system so that instead of sponsorship money going directly to their respective teams, the money would all get pooled together by KeSPA and redistributed more evenly amongst the teams. I wonder if they're still using this system now that some former eSF teams have joined.

IM/MVP dont seem to keep up. When the like of Losira/Keen advanced the furthest in individual league, you know your team is not so hot. The problem with esf/ex-esf teams are that upcoming talents are almost non-existent Plus it's goddamn Proleague. Looks what happened to EGTL
All factors concerned, I'd say SKT > CJ = Jinair > IM = KT > Samsung > MVP > Prime. Dunno how the neo-Stars will shaped up. Maybe they dig up some hidden, Sora kinda of rookie; maybe they partner up with other teams, who knows.

Yea Losira is the highest player yet Byul was top 8 in the season finals. And EGTL never took Proleague serious so that is a really bad example.

Nobody cares about regions outside of WCS KR /sarcasm On a more serious note, i still think that Stars may do well. After all if matches are Bo7, they only need to find 4 rookies, that can take a game. And they can force ace matches most of time this way. If matches are Bo5, it is even easier. If they partner with team like Prime... ouch.
I don't know if that really works like that but yeah for SC2 Woongjin Prime would be a pretty nice fit, Prime doesn't have enough good players to be competitive in a PL format.

Nah, what chuckles me about possibility of Woongjin-Prime partnership is the fact that it is a team with 3(!!!!) ace players.
No StarTale? Otherwise excited for IM and Prime in KESPA ! :D
One step closer to a proper team league with ALL the top teams present I guess. Would be nice if they could just all get it together and form one proper team league. Bring back the old proleague with all the best players.

That's something that only works in fantasy sports. Not real sports.
About Prime being the 5th best team: I don't know--I actually think Prime is the weakest team right now. Yeah, they have Maru and... who else? ByuN and Creator have been mediocre at best since HotS came out, MKP is gone, and there's really no one else but rookies. At least WJS will still have Soulkey and sOs, and Jin Air and CJ have multiple solid players each, if no big stars, like Savage, TRUE, herO, EffOrt, etc...
Edit: Forgot Samsung--they're much like CJ and JA with RorO, Shine, Reality, etc...
Prime and WJS would obviously have to recruit multiple players (please get Genius!), and hopefully they are at least solid players like the ones AZUBU recruit (Center, Vines, RagnaroK) and not like the guys on SouL (HwangSin, SSanaEE) that are often just kind of embarassing to watch.

To be fair HwangSin is more of a coach on that team. Genius would probably stay in Europe if at all possible with next year's system, so I doubt he will sign with a KeSPA team.
Really, the big thing for me is seeing nestea be revived by prologue, constant play and bo1 format when it does come will be perfect for nestea to craft ingenious beautiful games of starcraft, the games I still haven't let go and that I've yet to see other players replicate. Here's to hoping nestea can gives a glimpse to newer audiences just exactly why he has a legend to his name.

I doubt we'd see much, if any, of Nestea in proleague given they have players that are performing much better than him consistently. It's kind of strange, Nestea was played once in GSTL throughout the entirety of last season. That one time, he all-killed NSH (not exactly what I'd call a super difficult thing to do but still Jjakji). Other than that, not played at all.

Other than that, not played at all.
maybe he can all kill Prime and then go back into hiding lol, like if Maru is away.

Well, after all, that gives NesTea 100% win ratio in GSTL. Beat that first. /joking
Actually if I recall, NesTea played in GSTL very rarely even when he was a top player. Not sure what the reason is, maybe he just doesn't like playing games he can't prepare in advance for.
Edit: Quick search on Aligulac confirms this:
NesTea played 3 games total in GSTL in 2011 (all vs. Protoss) and went 1-2 3 games total in 2012 (all vs. Zerg) and went 0-3
So prior to the recent NSH all-kill, NesTea's LIFETIME GSTL record was 1-5, though it's worth noting that the one game he HAD won was a Game 9 win that won IM the finals of the very first GSTL.
Proleague is one the few things I still find interesting in the StarCraft II scene. I am very pleased over this; more-so because the LoL Proleague is finally coming to fruition.
yes i think after im finaly cleared the situation with LG they are looking for sponsorship as is prime, not sure for mvp though. i am not sure what staretale is going to do if GSTL disbands but redbull is a huge deal and may be intressted to join kespa ?

kt - skt - stars - jin - cj - galaxy - im - mvp - prime
interesting situation at this point, if you want to have an even number of team
The problem with the teams as is though is that there is a fairly massive power divide in terms of talent between KT SKT IM MVP and the rest of the proleague. Prime does have Maru and a few very good player so they are probably the 5th best team but those 4 are just far and away outclassing the rest.
Edit: I forgot CJ but I have not been keeping up with them so im not sure where they fall.
Would they ever consider an NFL style draft and split current teams up?
I honestly don't know who JinAir has left and I would take Byun Creator and Maru over Soulkey SoS and then nothing. That's the core problem actually with all the teams but the four I listed and that's that they have zero depth.

As someone said before i think they will have the LoL- and Sc2 Proleague on the same day. They will start with sc2 and after the matches lol will continue. (probably even the same teams, even if the two leagues dont interact with each other). That way sc2 will finally get a bigger audience too, even if its only cause of lol, but i guess that doesnt matter, it can only help sc2 in the long run i think.
I'm not sure how all the broadcasting rights work and who's getting along with who right now over there, but I hope they have GOM doing at least the english broadcasts with the casters we know and love. The last proleague's english broadcasts were just not on par with what GOM has been giving us for the last few years.

I dont really care who casts, yes of course good casters can add to the experience but if you need casters to enjoy the game then something is wrong with the game. The game should be able to stand on its own. We followed pro BW for over 10 years listening to Korean casters on shitty quality restreams. SC2 community dont know how good they have it and they still complain. When Flash would play Jaedong in BW I would just full screen that shit, ignore chat, ingore live threads and just get lost in the game...SC2 needs to get to that level so that you dont need tastosis going off on tangents on random shit to keep the viewers entertained.
All I want is for people to turn out and support the teams like back in the BW days, the most depressing shit for me last year was all the empty chairs.

I hope they at least have an easy-to-access Korean cast this time around. I'm tired on relying on VLC links or that Naver Sports streaming site. They're usually quite laggy and unreliable compared to the English stream, which I did end up subscribing to to support SPL.
I'm just one of those types that prefers Korean casts once in a while for any game, SC2, DotA2, or even LoL.

Is it possible to enjoy watching a game with crappy casters or no casters? Yes, but frankly I have better things to entertain myself with than just watching SC2 replays (which is what a VOD without good casting is). Good casting adds a LOT of enjoyment to me, and frankly without casting, I think no one but super-hardcore fans would follow SC2 at all. I definitely agree that Proleague needs to step it up and get some better English casters for next season. Let's be clear, by "good casting" I mean insightful and passionate casters. Tastosis going off on tangents isn't good casting. It's BAD casting.

But that's the thing, I even thought from way back the format will negate a lot of nesteas problems. The dudes a genius, rather then being thrown out randomly in gsl in terms of who he plays, proleague when the 7 format preplaced players, im has a lot of wiggle room for extras. If nestea can just practice for one match for a couple of weeks, with help from the team, cause you know im is gunning to win it all, I just think we can see great things from the professor. Maybe he wont be in form, but maybe we can see a couple of really great games of sc, that good old mind being put to work. I hope so
Of course, they're not going to win... But they have a lot of really solid players, i hope they take Proleague seriously and compete at their potential.

ehh seems unlikely. Take it from someone who tried to stay a diehard fan for a very long time, Nestea isn't even that great strategically anymore :/
I would not put him as top 20 in any matchup, not even ZvZ.

???
Despite a very disappointing streak in GSTL throughout 2012, they're still one of the best teams in team league and are easily top-tier contenders to win.

If the same players have to play both games it would be just stupid (just like bw/sc2 hybrid), but if its just about the teams i think it could be enjoyable.
something like
bo3: first: bo7 sc2 second: bo3 league of legends third: dunno any ideas?^^
ps: well separate leagues would be still better ofc

do you think? i think it would anger the lol fans if anything, i mean there has to be a reason why sc2 isnt that successful in korea. But yeah i think it would be kinda interesting, maybe only in some rounds or something like that.

haha well, i think as long as you dont require the pros to play mutiple games at once its an interesting idea. maybe its only me, but i would like to see something like that at least once ^^

I'm glad everyone is so excited about the new season of Proleague! I hope that this season will be the best yet, with easier access for all the fans outside of Korea. We are working hard to make this years Proleague the best it can be and hope you will continue show your support throughout the season.
