With WCS in the mix and OSL/GSL taking turns, one could make a case for there actually being less tournaments for almost twice the players. But now, when the excess players leave, the Korean scene is dying? It's not "dying", though I would agree with the statement that it's going back to where it was - at the level where it could be supported. Good note, but at what cost :O

To some degree it might be, since if the Korean public would have liked SC2 as a game there might have been a bit less room for LoL to explode like it did. Something you will never be able to prove, of course. However one can also argue that without LoL it's uncertain if OGN would have even survived and could have broadcasted SC2 for so long. So I guess there are two sides to it.

Isn't Woongjin the company going through tough times? Looking forward to Prime or IM picking up some of these guys before proleague starts.

Mh yeah, if SC2 never happened it might have delayed the full KeSPA transition to LoL a bit, but the game would have been big as an eSport regardless, just maybe not have such a highly competitive scene as quickly without the KeSPA teams - maybe more similar to SC2 when it still was eSF only. So in the end I agree with you I think. Blizzard is only responsible for the Starcraft side of things - the rest would have happened with or without it, just maybe a little different.

MVP ended up having some moderate success somewhere ![]() And didn't Guemchi go traveling, try out sc2, then go back to Woongjin to play BW the next year? Guemchi went to India, then played SC2 with Startale for a few months before moving back to Woongjin to play BW. Then he went to the Air Force and quietly retired after being discharged.

They expected Korean BW fans to follow their heroes and favorite teams after the switch, as well as to gain momentum, and expand its fanbase beyond what it was at the end of KeSPA BW. Not only was there no momentum, you can safely the KeSPA fanbase shrank. It is hard to say whether anyone is at fault. Those are some difficult things to predict and hindsight is easy. Nonetheless it is pretty clear that the Korean professional scene must shrink further until things are balanced out again. SC2 itself probably isn't doing any worse at all, but since it also didn't grow is exactly why there is too large of a professional fundation in Korea to be supported by it. Players losing their jobs, or franchises with a long history disappearing, is plenty to be sad about though.

Woongjin's secretary commented that it will be hard for us to participate in Proleague, implying that they might not participate in the upcoming season.
