So MLG had to give up a 128-player tournament for a 8-player one ? :/

I love what Red Bull is doing for SC2 but the number of players is too small for such a prize pool.

Yeah... I mean, you cannot knock Red Bull for doing a tournament. People should not say anything of the sort. However, the amount of impact a single tournament of this caliber has for the development of, not just the american scene, but towards international flourishing as a whole is quite low. It's incredibly unfortunate, but you cannot expect Red Bull to host and pick up everything for NA. It'd be nice, but it's just a fact of the matter that with less opportunity and infrastructure in NA it's going to get a lot harder for the players to make ends meet, and teams/viewers to show interest in the game as a whole.

I look forward to watching bomber win more money tho. gogogo ST :D

only 8 players? Not really a substitute for the hundreds of people who play at MLG.

Don't get me wrong, i love what Red Bull is doing for esports, and wish them nothing but luck

What if they have a 128 man qualifier leading up to that? Also, they can’t fit 128 people into the Hammerstein Ballroom.

I think what most people mean is that it would've been better to see 16 paid players.

Fun tournament, will probably some of it.

But yeah.. just 8 players for 50K and such a good casting lineup is underwhelming..

If they atleast had a good quality qualifier with broadcasts and a story.. it might work!

Was expecting to see people criticizing red bull for not tailoring the tournament to benefit the scene as a whole. I am impressed, TL.

Wish it was more than 8 players. It doesn't matter if they have a 1000 man online qualifier, the end result is still only 8 players at the tournament in person. There's no need to throw 50k at an 8 man tourney. Throwing 50k at a 16 man tourney would be better. Also congrats to bomber on another win!

Hmmm 8 players for 50k means a lot of money for some players. In a way I like this lineup it reminds me of the ppv streams mlg used to do when with 8 invited players. The matches betwen drg and marine king were awsome back then.I will definetly watch the event. The other players that really need inviting are Naniwa,Scarllet and definately Jaedong.Maybe even innovation now that he is with acer or a well know kespa player like maru, rain.

Also please stop with the redbull being the reason mlg dropped sc2.Mlg dropped sc2 because it was in conflict with blizzard and also because they picked up dota2,Sc2 will not be neither at fullsail nor at the next mlg in Orlando or god knows where it will be.There were enough threads about this.Redbull hosting this tournament had nothing to do with mlg decision.Although it seems a bit stupid that 2 major tournaments could not find a free date all year round so that they do not collide.

@Caniklehead

if jaedong or scarlett get invited they might have figured him out by now.Scarllet lost to him because of a random error and jd usually figures out his oponents in the long run.

Finally, an SC2 tournament in NYC. If any of the pros need a place to stay to save money - the door to my apartment is open But I guess they usually travel with their entourage, don't they...

Why would a 50,000 dollar prize pool not be good to give to 8 players? Have golf, basketball, football, snowboarding, etc. declined due to the enormous prize pools they give to their players? No. If anything they have become more successful because the tournaments are considered much more of a big deal if they are rewarding large amounts of cash.

I love these tournaments. I, for one, am very excited to see what happens.

This event is the reasons MLG did not run SC2 that weekend. MLG Adam said it directly several times, including to me. It is fact. They schedule these venues in advance and you can’t just “switch the dates”. Don't tell people to stop saying things that are true.

Appreciate Red Bull stepping up to the plate, but an 8 player tournament sharing a $50,000 prize pool just feels wrong. I wish it could be extended to at least 16 or even 32, but I suppose Red Bull has something in mind to last the whole weekend.

It's great for the 8 players, but there are a lot more than 8 Starcraft 2 pro(not semi-pro, but full time pro) players that need to earn a living. Of course we can't complain about additional tournaments and I'm sure the tournament itself will be fun to watch and great for the players who go to it but I can't help but feel it could have been done better.

They could have done 16 players and a 30k prize pool and spent about the same amount of money(assuming they are paying for flights).
