Eight elite StarCraft II programers hit NYC in November to compete for $50,000 in prizes.

Thanksgiving will come a bit early this year for StarCraft eSports fans this year. That’s because a brand new competition, Red Bull Battle Grounds New York, is coming to the historic Hammerstein Ballroom in Manhattan November 23-24.

Eight progamers will converge in the Big Apple to vie for $50,000 in prizes and the title of champion. Four of the contenders have already been named, earned by their performance at past Red Bull eSports events. The top two players from the inaugural Red Bull Battlegrounds tournament in 2012 – Jang Min ‘MC’ Chul and reigning WCS Season 2 champion Ji Sung ‘Bomber’ Choi – have already earned their spot in the lineup. They will be joined by Myeong Hwan ‘Golden’ Jo, the winner of this year’s Red Bull Training Grounds Santa Monica and Jens ‘Snute’ Aasgaard, winner of Red Bull Training Grounds Orlando.

Red Bull eSports ringmaster, Sean ‘Day[9]’ Plott, will reprise his role as Master of Ceremonies, caster and commentator extraordinaire, joined by other prominent names from the professional gaming scene. Red Bull Battle Grounds will also unfold in front of a live audience at the Hammerstein Ballroom – as well as a livestream audience, tuning in from around the globe.

Stay tuned for news of upcoming qualifiers to select the final four competitors, details of the schedule and format for the weekend and how to attend the Red Bull Battle Grounds New York StarCraft II eSports showdown. The two-day tournament will also be broadcast live at Redbull.com/eSports, which uses the Twitch TV player for all LIVE eSports coverage.

Something to note, this is the same weekend as MLG Columbus, and may be why MLG decided not to host a sc2 event at Columbus(Although no one can say for sure whether that is the sole reason).

I expected more than 8 players at the tournament, not so sure about 50k to 8 players but we'll see how it works out. It's good for our WCS Champion at least.

I mean 4 players qualify, but Im sure it will be world qualifiers since there are koreans already in the group.

Hopefully region qualifiers, with 2x from NA 1x EU 1x KR.

So MLG had to give up a 128-player tournament for a 8-player one ? :/

I love what Red Bull is doing for SC2 but the number of players is too small for such a prize pool.

We will see. If it is online, then anyone can qualify, but without travel costs being covered, it may be a haul for any Korean player. Even with the prize money, NYC cost a lot to travel to.

They didn't have to, they chose too. MLG decided not to run SC2 to avoid splitting the viewers and players. Conflicting events is a bad idea.

And we don't know what size the qualifiers might be. It could be 256 players for all we know.

I feel the same way....would've loved even for the location being NYC if Redbull would've attempted some form of an open bracket, online qualifiers just aren't the same as being there at the event competing.

MLG didn't have to, they decided to, whether because they didn't want to split viewers or because they decided to replace SC2 with DotA 2.

Seeing as this is going to be in a ballroom, it most probably wasn't viable to have a lot of people in an open-bracket style tournament. Ticket costs will probably be high to begin with, and having to rent out more space/ internet service/ manpower in NYC sounds unreasonably expensive. That being said, Red Bull has a lot of money but I don't think the purpose of this is to be a charity event for esports

Red Bull can do w/e they want. If you want to complain, save it for tournaments that don't seem to have a high enough prize pool. I like to see big prize pools: it lets me know what tournaments aren't getting WCS points. WCS related tournaments are nothing more than price fixing. Hopefully there will be more big sponsors and they won't get sucked into price fixing. It would be amazing if redbull hosted a tournament every time MLG was planning on doing something...

For prize pool comparison, in 2012 it was 41k total for 16 players. If they were covering travel costs they end up spending less money this way but It's pretty damn amazing for the players that get invited.

I hope for the love of spaghetti monster that there is either some more online qualifiers or some open bracket component. 8 player tournament just feels inadequate

Pls for the love of god 8 player invites are not growing our scene. You are just throwing more content at a market with 3 regions of wcs weekly content. At least have like a 64 player tournament so unknowns actually have hope of qualifying and getting exposure, throwing 50k at 8 players who already make a decent living out of this won't help anyone except for redbull...

Holding a tournament in New York with likely zero Americans? Yeah, that'll definitely help support the NA scene. Should be a fun event, but in no way does anything close to MLG's old open bracket. Disappointed.
