[TLMC] Team Map Results!

Text byPlexa
July 23rd, 2013 13:16 GMT

Team play maps are an important part of the Starcraft 2 experience. While lacking a competitive scene, they serve an important function by making SC2 accessible and enjoyable for all skill levels. While the ladder team map pool has not seen as much turn over compared to the 1v1 ladder, we hope that with this contest we can start to change that. Each of the map submitted provided an interesting take on team play maps ranging from exceptional execution of standard concepts through to radically different ideas that keep the ladder fresh and interesting.

The top three maps will receive the following prizes thanks to Blizzard and TeamLiquid:

1st Place: Mega Bloks Battlecruiser signed by the SC2 Dev Team, Razer Peripheral Set, $100
2nd Place: Kerrigan Action Figure signed by the SC2 Dev Team, Razer Peripheral Set, $50
3rd Place: HotS box art Poster signed by the SC2 Dev Team and Razer Banshee Headset

I know you're eager to see the results, so here they are:

Honorable Mention: ESV Emrel Coast, TPW Drifas Throne
by Timetwister22 and Meerel

Third Place: ESV Retribution
by NewSunshine

Runner-up: TPW Mystic
by monitor

Winner: CruX Breeze
by Semmo

A huge congratulations to all our winners. Retribution is a map which could fit right in amongst the existing 4v4 maps on ladder. While Mystic brings a completely new flavour to 2v2 with it's split-map concept. Breeze brings team play back to its mass Tier 1 unit roots with aggression being the name of the game. All three maps bring something unique to the ladder and we hope to see them in use one day.

This concludes the second season of the TLMC, and we hope to be able to do this again in the near future.

The maps will be considered by Blizzard for the ladder, no guarantees that any of these will reach the ladder!

Meerel keeps his tradition of never getting any prize despite making sick maps.
Come on, guys!
Congratulations to all the winners and the partecipants as always: one map after one map, you will save the ladder soon or later

Great picks overall, I love all of the maps for different reasons, and I'm glad one of each kind of map got a spot, a 2 vs 2 map, 3 vs 3 and 4 vs 4 map, hopefully all of them make it into the ladder, they would improve it tremendously. And given that the team ladder could use massive improvements maybe even have the honorable mentions get some spots.

I actually enjoyed the entered Team maps a lot more than the 1v1 maps.
Way more variety and experimenting, good job guys

Hope to see many of them on the ladder.

Hope they just add all of them. I don't see any reason against that at all.

Compared to what's currently in the map pool, I can think of no reason that the top 2 maps shouldn't be immediately thrust into it as well.

Beuheuheuuuuu.... a bit more writeup please? I have no idea why these maps are good, why they were selected, how much better they are from the ladder maps, why I should feel pumped...

Honestly, only the winner seems interesting to me because it looks like BGH. But it's because you gave me no reason to like the others ><

I didnt see the retribution game, but the map seems complex and pretty
The 2v2 map by monitor is especially unique because int he middle of the map, there are 2 layers of destructible rocks, and you have to destroy them in order to reach your teammate/other opponent since you and your teammate spawn vertically.
The other way to reach the other side is by nydus worm and air.

Winner? People love Hunters

I hope Breeze makes it into a lot of the map pools, ffa included. I was excited when Blizzard held a showmatch on Hunters during the Korean HotS launch event, but alas, the map didn't make it into any map pools afaik. I think Breeze might be a worthy spiritual successor.

It was a 25 minute game, so plenty of macro, but also lots of small and big engagements, it was pretty good

As for why you should be pumped, look at Blizzard's maps. And then back at these. And then back to Blizzard's again. Yay!

Yep, that's also the first thing I noticed when I looked at the map but honestly, this looks way better than big game hunters. More backdoor options and better positions on the naturals.

OMG I WAS JUST SAYING THAT is this not big game hunters? it TOTALLY is 100 percennt a slightly smooshed BGH

on a side note team sc2 doesnt need just maps to make it better (it needs maps) they imo need to fix the "everyone gets 200 supply" i feel sc2 team games are soooooooo fun but missing out

It may be a stupid question but do map designers start with hand made pencil + paper sketches when they are designing maps or do they just start with map editor or s.t.

Sometimes I do paper an pencil. I mean, if I'm sitting in class bored as hell, I might draw up some simple ideas like main-nat-3rd layouts. Though I never really finish an entire map on paper. Kinda hard to do without the copy past and distance judgement the editor provides. So mostly, I work in the editor alone. Though, every mapmaker is different.

I do a lot of pencil sketching but it's mostly to see if an idea will pan out, not to complete a design idea. It changes once you get in the editor and start blocking out real sizes and angles. But I will say the more you practice working between the two the better you get at using pencil accurately to plan/explore a map layout in a way you can actually build in the editor true to the original drawing.

Nicely done! I knew Breeze would win. It's too gorgeous to not win.

Also worth noting, Breeze has no high ground. It's all even-level. Everything.
