Hi,
I recently replied to a guy who was asking how to set low shaders with high models so you can get all the cool gore effects, explosions and death animations without having to use medium and above shaders, which I personally find very distracting. So I thought I would make a quick thread of this just so more people would know. The problem is that low shaders and bound to low models which sucks bigtime and I have no idea why Blizzard decided to implement this in HotS since we had that option in WoL.
However, if you want all the gore and splats and death animation etc with LOW shaders there is a way:
1. First of all, go to your graphics options and set your preferred options. I suppose you want low shaders, which will automatically make the models low. You will probably also want medium effects or higher but that's up to you. Now exit the game.
2. Go to your documents folders and find Starcraft 2. Open the variables.txt file.
3. change the following (notice the bold numbers) GraphicsOptionModelQuality=1 lowqualitymodels=0 useLowqualitymodels=0
4. Save and close the file.
5. Launch game.

Any reason why they hide such options and making them only available via changing .txt files and file properties? Blizzard logic <3

I have an issue, if i set low models, my kerrigan background stops moving...
yet ingame, i want to have the dotted ring around the pylon instead of the (smaller) blue ring..
what settings should i use to keep both kerrigan moving and the dotted ring around the pylon?.. is that just having models low?.. its weird cos the ring doesn't appear to me as a "model"
any thoughts?

Kerrigan is not animated because of low models/shaders (these are always combined unfortunately). However if you do the above she magically moves again.
About the pylon. I have not tried this (terran player ;p) but I have a feeling that the dotted ring is from low effects. So to get an animated Kerrigan + the dotted pylon, try putting effects on low before you tweak the variables.txt file. But like I said I am not sure about this one.

Totally irrelevant to the point of this post, but this made me chuckle. You find that having a bit of shading and lighting is distracting but large numbers of flying body parts, blood stains, models standing still while splitting in half (zealot kill), wriggling bodies covered in acid and units being set on fire help to dissect what is going on ?
Each to their own!

For me personally it's mostly about the glowy feel to it and the "side-shadows" that air units have. Also I like to see units die ;D So with this option I get the best from both worlds

Thanks for the post op!

If you set GraphicsOptionModelQuality=2 sc2 will not read it as a valid settings. It will work, but every time you change something in your ingame settings, SC2 wants to restart to revert back to low models.
If you set GraphicsOptionModelQuality=1 it saves and you never get the prompt to restart the game. If you want info on the difference between low and high models, check out this http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=405683

You are right. Setting to 1 is saved by the system. Great stuff. Updated the opening post, thank you.

Something I want to throw out there, is that when you change variables.txt, you should right-click, go to properties, second tab called "Security" (something along those lines). From there you make sure that SYSTEM isn't allowed to modify the file. I saved a copy of variables allowing me to have the settings I want on my desktop as well, so that if my variables ever does get modified by blizzard, I can get back my own file when I want.

Great, this was something, that was bothering me from start of hots

Didn't Blizzard make it so you can't do this ingame because it's easier to spot invisible units?

K thx...
I'm gonna give it a shot, worst case it doesn't work..

Sorry for the noob question, but why do you suggest that effects should be medium+? I saw some pros having low shaders with medium effects, but im not sure why. Also thanks for this guide

huh, so i tried doing this, but it doesn't seem to work, and every time i restart sc2, my variables reset to low models. i did exactly as it said above, but, still, nothing.
EDIT: I just reset everything to low, then changed the variables. thanks for tip!

Yep, you firstly need to change your desired settings in SC2. Then exit SC2. Then change the variable.txt.

If you put it to low effects , you lose some of the blood and stuff (like blood on the ground from marines and lings). Higher effects demand better pc performance. It's up to you really.

Just bumping this to let you know this still works in LotV
|
Still works! With these settings:
GraphicsOptionModelQuality=True lowqualitymodels=False useLowqualitymodels=False
|
Update for 2023!
All you need to do is start SC2, select your preferred options with LOW shaders. Close SC2. Then go to documents, Starcraft2, open the variables.txt
Change GraphicsOptionsModelQuality=2
Make sure that the following are like this:
lowqualitymodels=false useLowqualitymodels=false
Go to file and click on save.
Launch game.
