Don't think I will ever understand that. Because he's planning his future? You think he can be a professional Starcraft player forever? Dude making 100k+ a year at age 20 is pretty much priceless from a financial perspective. Its not like he couldn't enter school at age 24 or 25 if he wanted to. However deciding to pursue an education is always a good decision, and if you don't enjoy playing much then the money may not be worth it.

Don't think I will ever understand that. Because he's planning his future? You think he can be a professional Starcraft player forever? Well too many replies to respond to... You definetly cannot be a startcraft player forever, however there are other options in the esports industry. I do agree that planning for your future is a good thing, however it is not 100% important to have a degree to succeed, there are alot of jobs that you don't require a degree for. I personally think society puts too much importance on university education. And it is obvious money is of upmost importance to Stephano, and it is my personal opinion that having money as the most important thing in your life is bad. But obviously Stephano and myself are different people; if he really wasn't enjoying himself playing SC2 and is really going to enjoy being a doctor (lol something I can't really imagine, massive amounts of study so you can get a job with horrendously long hours and massive stress all so you can earn an amount of money that far surpasses the amount of money you need to live comfortably) then good on him. Have you considered the possibility that being a Doctor is about helping sick people rather than about earning money? People can get job satisfaction by actually making a real difference in people's lives and Doctor's certainly make a difference.
Got to agree with this. Going back to study to become a Doctor is certainly something admirable and worth following through on. If he was just planning to go back and study something just for the sake of getting a degree then it would be certainly more questionable in what path to follow.
GL Stephano!

he's not studying to be a doctor i mean you can say you're doing whatever when you're a teenager but really you usually don't know wtf you're going to end up doing

Naniwa is the best we've got now. A lot of people don't like him, but I do. He was going deep into Code S while Stephano refused to go to Korea. Naniwa is the best hope for foreigners right now. Like it or not.

Even if Naniwa was the last hope of a "foreigner" winning I don't think that would change anyone's opinions about him. They would still boo him in twitch.tv chat, and I would probably join them .

Hope he can focus and do well and school to become a doctor, if that is still what he intends to do. Takes a lot of hard studying things that you may not really enjoy just to get in. In any case best of luck to him.

He never seemed that motivated to me so probably a good move.

How much do you think a doctor earns? Would you think it would be cooler to have people recognize you for maxing with roaches and lings by 12 mins or saving lives?
I you dont understand his choice you should not question it...

So funny that so many people want Stephano to go be a doctor on a SC2 website.
Good riddance, need more westeners like Naniwa and Snute anway, people who actually will give their life to be the best at a game. The koreans have always been far better because of their dedication.

Well he could just as well donate his esports dollars to charity/ research. But ultimately, it seems that he actually wants to go back to school so I don't think people should give him shit for leaving.

recently almost all of his money comes from salary. I don't know about you, but in my country that salary with an education isn't that much really, just impressive from an eSport PoV. To really make a huge salary in eSport you need to win some major tournaments, Stephano just aint winning anything anylonger. He got 2nd in wcs eu, that is the only thing significant this year for him.

what.. i don't even... >< you do realise stephano is going to get older over time right? being a progamer when you're not korean is not a sustainable career (and even a vast amount of koreans would probably feel the same). Add to the fact that he's obviously not enjoying the game as much anymore as well as him personally always having a huge desire to study and become a doctor AND even the fact that he's already earn't a huge amount of money... why would he continue?
You are the selfish party here, I mean you're actually saying good riddance? Stephano did a lot for this community and deserves a bit more respect for what he accomplished, especially considering the fact that he repeatedly delayed his retirement to continue!
Best of luck in the future Ilyes! Go become a kick ass doctor and set yourself up life in an incredibly lucrative and satisfying career! Give it your best in WCS and most importantly, thanks for the memories!

I find there to be also less tournaments this year than previous because of WCS. 2nd Wcs EU is still extremely good.
I do hope he stays true to his word and goes back to school now though. It's the best move. He'll be forever known as one of the best Foreigner in SC2. I also don't like people who keep backing down from their word either.

Well, at the end of the day, you really are making it out that he has no choice over his future and that his sheer audacity in choosing to retire is wrong? Just think you should show a little more respect for his personal choices and for what he managed to accomplish if a video game is as important as your making it out to be ^_^

Nope, I am making out that if I was in his shoes I would give it my all instead of retiring to become a doctor. I even said in my previous posts that Stephano is obviously a different person to me, and what he does is his choice this is simply my opinion.
As far as I am concerned Stephano was some kid who used his talent to make a quick buck before carrying on with his life. good on you if you want to be a fan of that. I would rather support someone who had the dedication and passion to carry on through the hard times.
Also, im not really sure why I should be respecting his choices. Mabey if he was a personal friend of mine... but hes not, hes just a french progamer (who is quitting) and i am giving my opinion on his actions.

I certainly think he was good for the game, but his big money and big wins came when zerg was IMBA as all get out. The winnings will not carry him anymore, so good call on the timing.
