To: Everyone seeing that LOTV isn't on the long-term list:
Look at the top of the chart. It says focused on the "largest" and "highest margin" segments. Largest is obvious, Wow is much larger than SC. Highest margin is about ROI, return on investment, and obviously you get a much larger bang for your buck in a subscription based MMO. SC doesn't meet either criteria, and so isn't on that list.
This does NOT mean it's not on any list, but its definitely not on a largest and highest margin list.

WoW is almost 10 years old. And has still quite a lot of players what is impressive.
It will be interesting which buisness modell they are chosing for the new mmo. If it´s F2P it will be interesting how they will seperate from the 200 other generic F2P games that are out now.

$450 000 000 from WoW in one month, which is $15 000 000 per day $ 44 000 000 from hots day1
Hence, the reason why the game lacks attention a lot of the time. They'd have to make day1 sales every 3 days to compete. So, basically SC2 is a side project. Consider yourselves informed. <8 million right now, was something like 13.5 million or so at its peak (long past now); but your point is still right, WoW is a money printing machine and makes them a lot more money than other Blizz franchises. The comparison doesn't really matter though, WoL and HotS were both worthwhile investments for them with a good return by themselves. You don't skip a very good investment only because you also have an even better one in parallel, they are not mutually exclusive. And I think they showed that they care for SC2 by investing into WCS.

If they can pull off the same as dota or LoL with it, then it will be tremendous.

If that is the case I dont know why they put Blizz All-stars there, seriously how can anyone think this will take off?? Probably because it will release this year, so they want to highlight it. Remember, these calls exist to give stakeholders a perspective on what to expect the next few quarters, along with how their longer plan develops. It wouldn't do any good to highlight LotV right now, as HotS just released and is doing well, so that franchise is covered with that news bulletin. Us gamers/fans are far from the target audience of this kind of thing.

Interesting to see All-Stars as "large or high margin" but not D3 expansions or LotV.
|
Blizzard seems to run on faith and passion as much as money... and SC2 is much more a project of faith and passion than a money-making project, compared to the other things they are or could be working on.

I'm looking forward to Hearthstone and this new MMO thing, I have to admit.

We have been hearing about this new MMO thing for years now and we don't even have any idea what gender it is.

I believe warcraft 4 is the planned sequel to WoW, is it not?
Also: HotS was supposed to come out in 2012 originally, not 6-9 months after WoL. The original time from was always 2010-2012-2014. (90% sure about this at least)

LOL People should not be worried it will not come out. It is not being cut, period. HotS was very successful and the pro scene will still be going in 2 years. LotV is not in danger.

I'm pretty sure LotV is locked in and confirmed for release once it is ready. You people worry over nothing all the time.
|
The only thing I really look at in these conferences are the number of people who still play WoW.

Not really surprising. That game is like decade old already. What surprising is it hasn't downed to like 1m yet.

Their sub numbers usually swell at a release and then drop off again after awhile, not surprisingly of course. It goes without saying that people get what they want out of a new expansion and then cancel. When MoP released they went up to 10 million again, after a similar drop quoted here towards the end of Cataclysm. MoP 10 Million Subs
Next expansion their sub numbers will swell again for a few months and then they will curtail again after about a half a year.
Maintaining roughly 8 million and then surging to 10 million for a few months every year and a half or so? Yep, $$$.

WoW just has such good backstory(which admittedly they are actively trying to destroy), so other MMOs have a real hard time competing with that. Also WoW was really the first MMO to truly *make it*, so atleast for me it feels like "home" so to say. I'm byfar the most comfortable when playing WoW compared to other MMOs, even if it is only a shadow of itself at best. I ofcourse cannot confirm this on a larger scale, but atleast friends of mine from WoW seem to follow a similar pattern. If we fx. compare I'd most certainly say Rift is a better/cooler game than WoW, yet I just felt there was something missing, which I could always just best explain by "It's not WoW".
