Hot Virtual Keyboard is a program that displays an on-screen keyboard which highlights which keys you are pressing. This makes for some interesting activity to watch during intense matches of StarCraft 2, as keys are lighting up all over the place. I thought it would be cool to see how this would look in a player stream, and after customizing the keyboard a bit, I ended up with a pretty pleasing result.
Video Demo
I'll try to re-record a higher quality demo after the April Fools Warhounds disappear
You'll either need 2 monitors, or enough space on your current monitor to capture the program and overlay it on your stream. My current set up is one monitor (23" 1920 x 1080) with OBS, using software capture for SC2 in windowed mode and Hot Virtual Keyboard.
I've been told it should work after the 30 day evaluation period.
Customizing the look There's a lot of customization that you can do with the program, and I'm excited to see what people create. You can technically skin the entire thing from scratch, or simply change the colors of the keys and background image.
My current keyboard style:
Options > Theme Style -> Dark Edit 'Selected' keys to be a bright green (Hue: 57, Sat: 203, Lum: 155, Red: 176: Green: 241, Blue: 88) Background: HotS Evolution Chamber Screenshot
Looking forward to see what the community does with this, I think it has a lot of potential.
Set up with one monitor For people looking to software capture the program directly so you can stream on one monitor (without having to capture screen area on the second monitor) - go to Options > Themes and check Native Style of Windows. This will make the virtual keyboard show up in the software capture options as "On Screen Keyboard"

I would love to see this on the top player streams. It could be a scene that they switch on for some games, show other stuff for other games (in case they're worried about advert space). Really really cool idea and suggestion shindigs
That's a great idea. Handcam/Controllercam/VirtualController is already quite popular in the speedrunning community. I wondered why nobody did this for SC2. I'd really like to see some progamers pick this up and show their amazing keyboard speed.
On April 02 2013 03:01 EGLzGaMeR wrote: I would love to do this, but I only have 1 monitor.. So I don't think I can do it? ;;
I'll take a screencap of my setup. I'm on one monitor too, a 23" monitor at 1920 x 1080. I played SC2 in Windowed Mode so I open up some more space at the top of my monitor where I have Hot Virtual Keyboard. PM me if you'd like more assistance.
I use Software Capture in OBS to specifically capture SC2 and HVK, I don't capture the portion of the screen.
With 2 monitors, I think its easier to keep one monitor Fullscreen Windowed and have HVK on the other monitor.
This is an awesome idea! Have been thinking about optimal ways of capturing keyboard interactions to see what keys I could optimize, and this would be pretty useful!
Thanks for putting this together will definitely give it a try ^_^
I actually think this has also has potential for coaching and learning SC2. Watching my VoD over again, I can already see parts of my gameplay that I can improve. Its better then having a camera over your hands IMO because you can see the exact buttons you're pressing.
Be super careful with entering your passwords on stream with this. There's an option to not show buttons when you're entering passwords, but it doesn't seem to work with Starcraft to this point for me.
It sounded pretty cool, but in-game it's fairly meh. Just like watching actual hands it's not really that interesting in practice unless its at an extreme apm. Then again, their face isn't really that interesting to see 99% of the time either.
I think this is considerably more interesting than watching a streamers fingers moving around the keyboard. Easier for me to see what's being pressed and seemingly less affected by fps issues than a webcam is
Got it working - pretty nice feature. Took a little effort to figure the settings to get it looking the way I want it to, but otherwise it's nothing too difficult.

Here's how I set up my stream on one monitor. I software capture both programs. However in the latest stream I did, I had to capture the area instead of directly capturing the virtual keyboard because it wasn't showing up as an option to capture.

Well, I beg to differ. Alot of people like to watch keyboard cameras on SC2 Streams. This IMO is better. I would especailly enjoy this while watching high APM players.

Having a look of the hand on the keybaord maybe, but watching what touchs are being pressed ? I don't know.. you"re gonna see A and 1 2 3 4 being pressed a lot and it doesn't really teach you anything you didn't know.
Stupid question but how do you close the program? It just pushes the buy screen when i try to close it, killing it in task manager resulted in the same...

Does your cursor not blink a ton when you allow it to capture layered windows? O.o I'm not sure if I did something wrong when I had it set up or not...
If anyone could just make a guide for how to do it with OBS I'd more than likely stream with it every time but the cursor blinking was too much for me.

Well alot of people like Keyboard cams, and you don't learn anything there either. If anything you get a better view of how fast the player is going and actually pressing with this view.
It's a pretty cool thing but I ran into an issue where it would stop highlighting keys if I alt tabbed out of SC2. Once I did that, it would only work outside of SC2. :/
Right side if the keyboard is barely used even not used at all. It might be a good idea to give option on which part of the keyboard the user would like to show on.
I wonder whether it would be possible to code a similar application which can be picked up by "Game Source" on Xsplit or dxtory. This way you might be able to get rid of the window mode setup, etc...
so you don't need to use the window mode or 2 monitor if you have the license for xsplit with the only downside is that when I spam the fps starts dropping quite a bit as demonstrated in the last 10 seconds or so of the video. Not sure how to fix this or if its my cpu(x6 1055t) which is not powerful enough.
Do you see this sort of fps drop when you spam with your current setup?
After seeing Siglemic (Super Mario 64 speedrunner) using the virtual inputs for his N64 controller I though this would be a sick addition to SC2 streams and here we are! I hope this becomes a thing and a lot of people start to use it
If i'm playing sc2 fullscreen windowed, then the keyboard will show up in game. I got it working with OBS no problem, i just wanna play the game and stream without having to play it fullscreen

You can change the keyboard type. I'm using the skin without the numpad, mini something.
I thought this was someone playing with the on screen keyboard from the title lol...
I think that this is a really amazing idea for streams and even moreso for tournaments. Imagine being able to see someone's actual inputs into the keyboard when they have like 500 apm, it would be so awesome.
Hey guys, here's another vod of me streaming with virtual keyboard. http://www.twitch.tv/flameling/b/385754118 Hot Virtual Keyboard still works after the trial ends, but for some reason, it closes out after like 20-45 minutes for me, so I have to reopen it. Not sure if it's just me, but it's a little bit of a hassle to deal with.
I've managed to get the virtual keyboard to be hidden on a single moniter while you play, and still show up on stream Its not an exact science, but just set it up (im using OBS) to where you want it over your sc2 screen and whatever, and then just play around with alt tab until its no longer actually in your sc2 window (but hopefully still will show on stream)

(for the record, Flameling used Mieru Keyboard in the past, that I used too, I just don't really like using the 2nd monitor often so I stopped using it... I also thought mieru keyboard is too big ~.~)
well I'd use this but the the problem is I don't have money for the paid version and don't want to restart it every 20 minutes or something...
(also when you use both of these, probably turn off the scene while logging in so people can't copy your password)
That is kind of neat. I could see that being something that is not on-screen all the time, but is like something they pop up from time to time on a broadcast to show people what is happening. I dig it.
Professional SC2 players using this on their streams would be adding a big chunk of learning content to it. I get very frustrated when I can't see either the command card or a keyboard cam.
The same thing could be accomplished if SC2 had an onscreen key-input monitor. Doesn't SFIV have that?

Pretty much this. I can't stream even at 45 FPS, running game capture on SC2 + screen capture on monitor #2. It's a really cool idea for stream viewers but it's really intensive on the computer, if only there was a lower resource intensive option for bad computers :/.

yeah...I've looked for a way around it, can't seem to find one :/
I'll be testing it later tonight probably on OBS, using window capture not screen capture. I'll post with any results/feedback I do get, but I ran some tests on it and it seemed to have no impact on the 720p45fps stream I was running before.
Has anyone figured out how to get OBS to software capture the program itself rather than screen capture? It worked for the me the first time but doesn't recognize it anymore...it would help some progamers too. I'll edit the solution into the thread if someone posts it.
i would really love to see this replace shity keyboard web cams some streamers use. their fps is too low to see the clicks. Honestly Razer should release their own software to make it more popular.

Would be a matter of using scene-switcher correctly. But you are totatlly right; using a visual keyboard while typing in your password and showing that to your viewers would be pretty bad.
On April 09 2013 18:46 guruPanda wrote: I'm a little concerned about Passwords being seen on stream...
The best solution would be to login before streaming first. Alternatively, you can disable several keys in the system (at least for the goop goop goop) but I would like the former.
Im gonna test again and see what I can do about the lag ~~
This looks really awesome! But anyone know how to let the big streamers know about this? Im thinking Grubby, Catz etc or do they already know and just dont want it.
I do get some lag on it, we'll see how my system can handle it post overclock though.
Somebody posted a link from my stream on reddit to give an idea of what it looks like, it's on the front page at least so hopefully some of the bigger guys will see it.

Twitter the link at them with a brief description. @FollowGrubby @ROOTCatZ
I actually hate it if they bottom right corner is covered. You never know when watching a Zerg what they are actually building and thus it's pretty much impossible to learn from such streams.

That is actually a pretty good point. Even if you only have half of your keyboard revealed, it might be quite bad. In case anything happens, I hope blizzard's mobile verification system will catch it before it goes out of control. ^.^"
As others have said, I would love to use this if it was actually supported by the streaming software directly rather than having to screen capture it. That's just too much on peoples CPUs or monitor sizing(s). Damn! This was exciting :D
As soon as there's an option for most of us, I'm sure we'd use it.
It would be extremely neat if this could be added as a plug in to OBS, instead of using the screen capture like many people mentioned. It doesn't sounds like it would be very hard to code.

Apparently direct capture is possible for some people, and not showing up for others. I'll try to investigate.
Is there any way to make this work with a custom layout? I'd like to create one similar to Siglemic's N64 controller, but with an Arcade control panel from Donkey Kong. Would there be any way that I could use my own Photoshopped image onto this?
[EDIT] I figured it out! You can fully customize a personal keyboard. it wont be as exact as Siglemic's, but I was able to make buttons highlight on a digital DK control panel. Awesome program!

In options>Theme if you check "Native style of the window" it will turn it into a normal window that OBS can capture with Window Capture. This prevents you from having to use slow ass windows 7 monitor capture I have yet to figure out how to make it not be always on top though, that's pretty annoying

you can capture a screen region just like xsplit, its just not as obvious. right click in the sources box, Add-software capture...keep monitor capture 1 on unless the virtual keyboard is on another monitor, check the sub-region box and click select region. its the exact same as screen region for xsplit. I've been using this method since first learning about the virtual keyboard http://www.twitch.tv/palomino_sc2 my keyboard randomly switches to korean ingame

Well, if you are using OBS you just press Edit Scene and move things around. Click on the keyboard source in your sources box, this will outline it in red on your preview window. Move it around and resize it wherever you want.

Yup, definitely gonna be open source, however, this is my first program using Direct3D directly, so no promises on the prettiness of the code.
Times to times (and it seems only when SC2 is running too) some keys stay highlighted for some reason, like if I was keeping pressing it. For example if I ALT + F4 from SC2 to windows, the ALT and F4 keys stay highlighted. Am I the only one ? Any idea what could be happening ?

This probably happens due to Alt+F4 being a special system call and it probably eats the messages to the program.
Is there any way for me to use this on my stream with OBS when I play on windowed fullscreen mode? I can capture the keyboard box, and it functions properly, however when I alt tab to SC2 it no longer registers which keys I am pressing. I only have 1 monitor.

Maybe try turning on a 'lock' option on the program so it doesn't minimize when you alt tab? either that or just go into windowed mode and make it as big as possible.
I may check it out tonight on stream. Perhaps it's easier to use than this other one, and better yet isn't asking $30 lol
I mentioned in an earlier post in the thread that I had tested with gop.... you can even use game capture on the program as it uses DirectX, but I would get serious frame drops. Maybe someone can test it and see if they have better luck with it.

let me know how it works!
Tried the lock thing, It keeps it in front of sc2 so that won't work. Windowed mode for me goes to a funny ratio, so I have bars from the desktop on either side, so I don't think I will do that. If anyone figures out how to make this work, please message me!
Btw I found out you can include mouse click buttons on the virtual keyboard when you go to make your own...but they don't highlight when you click. I sent an email to their team so hopefully we can find out a way to make the mice highlight on click if people are interested in doing that on stream.
JoyToKey maps Button 0 on the fight stick to the key 'a' so it highlights on the virtual keyboard set up. The green button is mapped to 'a'.
Up, down, left, and right are mapped to num 8, num 2, num 4, and num 6 respectively. For some reason it detects these as the default up down etc controls. I placed all the buttons on top of each other (the activated buttons float to the top for display) and made my own custom buttons in photoshop.
I would love to see this become standard or at least widely used. I love a little keyboard sound with the stream audio and this would really complete the experience.

I am wondering the same thing
When I was experimenting with minimizing, my results were that Windows doesn't even render minimized windows. This usually makes sense, of course, because how are you supposed to look at it. However, it should work just fine as long as you don't minimize it but instead just put the other windows such as StarCraft above it.

The problem is, the Virtual Keyboard will still remain over the starcraft screen while running
I think this would be cool to see in some tournament settings. Imagine WCS EU where they have the cam shots of the players keyboards, now you see this for a period of 10 or 30 seconds when APM is high.
If the OP is still in current version, you could probably use a condense keyboard layout instead. I sorely doubt that anybody uses their numpad for starcraft2. Try TTesports meka keyboard, the arrow keys cushion themselves right under the enter key to form a flush rectangle keyboard setup. + Show Spoiler +
This is also done for seemingly 3d images of playstation and xbox controllers in case anybody was wondering. If the program gave the ability to edit the images i'd take it up.

What's even cooler is when the camera-view cuts into first-person of each player. I don't know if you've ever watched korean BW, but that was always really cool to see, and i've been waiting for that to happen. Dreamhack usually experiments with a lot of cool features (heartrate monitor?) and i would see them doing something like this. I also believe MLG has a separate display (and stream) for player FPV, but it would still be very cool to be lead into FPV on the main screen. These days, you could have the whole shabang... FPV together with keyboard cam as an overlay.
Ahh I should update the OP with more relevant information and alternatives.
So I saw CatZ stream with a daskeyboard skin. It would be awesome if he or someone from ROOT could release it because I would totally use it as well as many others, as daskeyboard is pretty popular among SC2 players. Would be a good way to gain a little exposure for the brand too!
I cannot get OBS to work so I'll probably stick to Xsplit but I dont see how to add software capture.. anyone have an Xsplit tutorial???
OBS won't let me resize my camera and I still can't figure out how to tell it where to stream my stuff.. why does this stuff always have to be so overly complcated with no instruction.

This is all in the guides section of the forum, stickied at the top...
Some things are slightly repositioned/renamed in newer versions, but the basic concepts are all there. If you still can't figure it out after reading this then...idk. The software isn't complicated =/

For CatZ's stream, he just restarts it every 30 minutes lol. There doesn't seem to be a permanent fix for this unless you wish to buy it.
Do people really enjoy this in streams? or would they prefer streamers to just uncover the bottom right command card? I was about ready to implement it into my stream but shortly realized I dont want every single one of my keystrokes to be registered to god knows where- perhaps even when the program is closed. Keyloggers circa 2001 stealing all your diablo 2 items :O

I think it's great because you can always check VoDs
pretty easy to do, pretty easy to set up, and use, works with OBS pretty well, seemed pretty decent on my stream It looks rather ugly how I had it set up, I was just antsy to test it and see how well it logged everything. so my edges just dont line up that well and I dont have it worked into any overlay.
with that disclaimer http://www.twitch.tv/avos5/c/2542128 you can change the colors on basically everything, ideal for chroma keying it out, you can change the sizes of everything, even font type, you can change the shape of your keys and make them round or square or anywhere between. plus, FREE.
Is that normal when i have the virtual keyboard and i tab out to my second screen, the programm shutting down? is there anyway to fix that with Xsplit or not ?
For people with a dual PC streaming setup, is there a way that you could get this to work? I know the auto scene changer program for Starcraft 2 and League Of Legends does take that in mind by having the "Dual Compter Mode"
Hi there, I have the program called '' HOT virtual keyboard '' but how do I put it on my stream overlay ? I just kept searching for 30 minutes for this and I have no idea how to put it on..
I don't really care for things like this. It's distracting and kind of useless to watch people's hands/face/etc. I'd rather watch what they're doing, because it's a lot more summarized and less confusing to follow (if that's what you're actually trying to pull off by watching the keyboard).
I don't find APM all too amazing unless you're like, Madbull or someone else.
Hm, I really like this, I don't like having to have it in the corner of my eye though. Does anybody know of a way where OBS can capture this aside from a screen-capture? Some things obs can capture even when they're in the backround.
I've tried a lot of the options here, and I will personally be using NohBoard, as it seems to be the best free opensource option at the moment. Here are my thoughts on the options I tried from this thread:
NohBoard - http://obsproject.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=22&t=3783 http://sourceforge.net/projects/nohboard/ Pros: - Free - Open source - Has full keyboard layout, functional Alt key (deal maker for me) - Mouse input layout and mouse direction display - Options to make your own layout and only include the keys you want - Customizable colors Cons: - Not exaclty a con, but it would be cool if the mouse layout were on a diagram of a mouse, but not a big deal. I think this can probably be accomplished with a customizable layout. - Have to open up 2 instances of the program (as far as I know) to get the mouse AND keyboard layouts. They have to be in 2 separate windows EDIT: I just made my own layout that has both keyboard and mouse. No need for 2 instances!
EzKey - http://twofx.github.io/EZKey/ Pros: - Free - Open Source - Customizable Colors Cons - Some keys are missing (Alt key, NumPad, Arrow keys, or Home/End/PgUp/PgDn/Insert/Delete) - No Mouse input display
Gop-Gop-Goop-Goop http://www.grumpybread.com/download/gop-gop-goop-goop/ Pros: - Free - Open source - Full keyboard layout - Customizable colors - Ability to turn off certain keys if you don't want them to show keypresses - Mouse diagram and button layout (in one window!) Cons - No mouse direction indicator (still awesome though) - Alt indicator does not work - No customizable layouts
I just switched to Win 8.1 and this software is the only one I didn't manage to make it works With OBS and only one monitor, no way to get it renderedn even with the "Native Style of Window"
Anyone managed to make it works w/ win8.1 and 1 monitor please ?
I wrote up a simple keyboard overlay program for streaming on OBS / recording games. Here it is in action:
It is a transparent overlay on the screen.
You can customize the colors of the outline, keys, highlights Full keyboard Layout (All PF keys, Numpad, etc.) Customized keyboard layout (Don't want to show the numpad? Take it off) Ability to change where it is on the screen (Since it's an overlay and not a separate window, this is important.) 5-button mouse supported.
Cons: Does not show direction of mouse movement (Having problems implementing this) The return key shows up on the keyboard and numpad (Having issues separating this)
It works on Windows 7 and 8.1 with 1 monitor and OBS streams.
Is this a program anyone that streams would be interested in?
