Stephano, can play with the best, but if your not having fun why play?
More players on EG; TL (not stephano) that have no future should step aside from the scene to let knew players in. Lets face it there are a number of players who haven't gotten results in years. And they probably never will again. Where i am from we call this dead weight. Stephano sees all these players not doing anything with their lives and says nah that's not for me when i burn out i'm gonna go back to school and start my life.. rather than sit there and rot inactively on a team.
Good Luck Stephano whatever happens, never really was a fan but I always respected you in the scene.
Gratz!

I think you guys all definitely know more about stephano's life than he does.

Stephano lost the fun of the game some would say a side effect of joining EG !
But i would totaly agree , why do something that makes you unhappy , there are too many players that hate the game and don't play for fun at all and are really resentful and it s kina bad for them in the long run.
Call me a heater but i think if he would still be in Mill he would not have retired in 6 months , all the traveling and living at the EG house and after that the bad Korea experience has taken it's tall.

Education always trumps any video game "career"
No one actually known the future of esports. It would be bad to be left hanging in 5 years. If every pro gamer would have stephano's attitude our scene would be really close to dead in a few years, so let's not call that being the smartest... Really nice piece of content, personally I don't mind him retiring as I was never a huge fan of his play.
For him, it is smart. For Esports, it still could be smart. The best would continue to play, those that slump would move on with their life -- new people would appear. How many are in code b?

He feel no more fun from playing SCII ? There is thousands and thousands of player who dream to play SCII for living. I dislike this attitude.

If he thinks hes going to make even close to what he made as a pro-gamer he is sorely mistaken . He is going to have to study his ass off to make basically minimum wage as a nurse. He might easily fool you guys, but at this point im already expecting to hear the next news title "stephano signs for another year with EG". You wait and see folks, he will be continued to be salaried for EG till sc2 is dead, then he will go into Warcraft 4 which is obviously blizzards next big esport . After that he will get another 4 -5 years of esport life. It doesnt matter if he thinks the game is fun or not. No work unless you are a pilot is fun.
Dont ever listen to what young kids say, their minds change constantly.
Just because you are an unhappy depressed person doesn't mean everyone else is. Pretty much every job can be a very happy and motivating one if looked at from the right angle and if it resonates with who you are. It's about finding that job and knowing yourself and what you want, and to me it looks like Stephano knows what he wants (and he said it throughout all of his career that he considers stopping SC2 at any point to go into a medical career). And it seems to me he found out more about himself while he was in Korea, which in my mind is a positive thing (even if his stay in Korea wasn't a positive experience in itself).

What has thousands of other players go to do with Stephano? You make it sound like Stephano took the opportunities of others to get where he is. No, he's just much better than those other players.
You think playing the same game 8+ hours a day is fun?

And that's why hes retiring. Would you dislike the attitude of hating the game but staying around for a paycheck anyway? I could name you a few people like that

Stephano's outlook on his SC2 career is very wise. He understands that SC2 has been around for a few years now and with the release of HotS many newer players are going to start dominating the scene, making it less lucrative for him. It was quite emotional to hear him say that this will be his last 6 months with SC2, but he knows what is best for him in the long run. Going to university should be his primary goal right now, and at least we won't see how his skill eventually (but not necessarily) compared to other players declines, which then will force him to quite SC2 as a career.
All in all I'm sad that one of the greatest foreign players is leaving the scene while is still in his prime. It is probably all for the best though.

Stephano's brilliance was his way of thinking about the game. Once the community had time to analyze and absorb that thinking, his advantage was taken away. He knows he'll never reclaim that element of surprise. How do you motivate yourself when you know you'll never really compete with the top Koreans on a consistent basis?

In sc2 I give you 2 months then you will hate sc2. From all rts games (wc, sc, cnc, stonghold, empire earth, etc) , sc2 has by far the shortest long-time fun.

Gratz! Don't worry mate, I'm sure that eg knows a great deal more than you about running a team, and who pulls their weight for the team. If you feel you need to take the matter further: @evil geniuses, if you feel strongly about it

Just one win. I bet you that is all it will take to extend his studies, but if it be his desire, then more power to you, Stephano. I had the most fun watching your tournament runs.

I'm sorry but while people can find enjoyment in their job, it isn't ordinary. Most people find actual "work" tedious especially if you do it for long hours. It may be great going out for a beer and a party, but I'd wager that if I kept you at it for 8 hours a day, 5 days a week, very soon it wouldn't seem so fun anymore. That's life.
Success is built on dedication and stephano has no dedication to be good - not even great - just good, amongst the korean pros.

What's more silly; mistyping a word where it's obvious what it is (dumbest / dumbets) or calling someone out for not being able to spell (forgetting that English isn't everyone's first language) and then somehow correlating that to maturity...
Get a life...

If thousands and thousands of players dream to play SC2 for a living, why don't they do it? Stephano was one of those thousands of people before, but he took the initiative. The rhetoric makes no sense because he worked very hard to become one of the best players in the world. He just happened to be having fun at the same time. It's not fun for him right now so he rather focus on a stable future. He is more mature and aware of his position than other 20 year olds. Most are still in university or already at a dead end job not knowing what they want out of life.
|
Interesting to see Stephano so mellow, rather than the showman. He always said he wanted to go back to school, and already deferred it once, so the expected departure isn't unreasonable. Everyone loses the proverbial faith from time to time, I just hope he'll stream from time to time after he's left the pro circuit.
