I don't think region locking will really help to raise foreigner skill level. If they only play each other, then they will only put in as much effort to be good enough to beat each other. They will no longer care about being good enough to beat koreans if they can make decent enough money only beating foreigners.

I'll admit it will help more foreigners stay in the scene and be relevant if they can sustain themselves with money beating other foreigners. I just don't think it will be conducive to actually raising the skill level of foreigners.

Times have changed since then. By now everybody knows that from a competitive aspect tournaments without Koreans are very low level.

Yea I don't want to hear "X foreigner only won because koreans wern't there."

Why? Every time a European hockey team wins its because the NHL pros from NA were not there? You do realize that most NA teams in professional sports(excluding soccer) could mop the floor with any other team in the world. Does that stop them from having their own leagues? Do people not watch college football, claiming, “Well there are no NFL players so these kids are jokes.” There are soccer teams for tons of countries and only some are top tier.

NA teams are good but they can't MOP THE FLOOR with ANY other team in the world IN ALL SPORTS excluding soccer. Come on I wanna see where is merica's curling team winning championships left and right...

He said North America. Canada's curling team does win championships left and right. Whenever they don't get Gold at the Olympics or Worlds it's a huge upset. (Yes, I realize the Scandinavian countries usually do pretty well and so do a few Asian countries recently.) In Canada at least, our curling teams are expected to win gold.

EDIT: I don't necessarily agree with the comment that I appear to be defending, just saying that maybe curling isn't the best example. Rugby, perhaps? Or cricket?

How about Sumo Wrestling. Or Volleyball. Or Table Tennis. Or Chess. Or Ski Jumping. Or Field Hockey. Or countless more.

if I might jump in while those sports might not be dominated by the NA most of those sports do in fact have a country or part of the world that do dominate them. and it doesn't stop people from other parts having a league of their own without people saying what a joke that (insert dominate region) aren't there.

so why must people take that attitude in sc2 I don't understand it though I guess it's not going to change so maybe I should just accept it.

As long as these weaker leagues are actually smaller in prestige and prize money everything is ok. But MLG has the aspiration to be one of the biggest, most prestigious, highest price money, most stream viewers tournaments in the world. And that simply wouldn't fly without the best players.

This is such a stupid argument I've seen so many people make.

The only way you grow non-korean esports scene is incentivizing non-korean esports competitors. If you make north america and europe into arbitrary minor leagues you won't see any growth.

Torte de Lini just posted this on reddit:

Some IPL people are going to Blizzard to help create a sort of regionalized LCS/WCS-style thing.

Axiom sad because they thought (read: falsely) they couldn't travel to foreigner events (which is [potentially] wrong) or vice-versa. To note that there is talk of "region-locking" tournaments, but it's just all speculation.

OSL/GSL/GSTL/KeSPA PL are not dying (maybe Proleague, doubt it).

WCS NA combined with MLG for NA, WCS KR combined for GSL (so they're attaching themselves), WCS EU for DH. Think of it similar to how EVO works in that regional major tournaments contribute points to a WCS sort of thing/seedings into a grand finals idea.

NASL feeds into NA, IEM feeds into EU.

Essentially, this will create a storyline idea where all tournaments are consistent with seeded competitors have backgrounds of "overcoming" their opponent (probably at Blizzcon).

Too much power struggle in SC2 (Korea & USA), Blizzard aims to lace them all up into relevancy and combine audiences to strengthen the scene (my interpretation).

Several WCS within the year (seasons) - several weeks per season. If you choose a region, you have to play in that region for a year (you can choose other regions if you don't want to play in your region, but you are "locked" in your region (associate this with the Axiom thing))

http://www.reddit.com/r/starcraft/comments/1b0gso/blizzard_going_to_make_a_regional_riot/

Some more leaked "rumors"

Blizzard is going to announce that GSL and OSL are now 'partners'. Both will have three Starleagues a year, the same as it was when it was MSL and OSL. Blizzard will pay OGN and GOM about 2 million a year for working together. GSL champion gets seeded into the next OSL season. Same with OSL and GSL.

I talked to a few people close/in Blizzard and they want to go the Riot route. Have everything more connected. Instead of 40 tournaments and 600 different organizations, they want to have more regional play and to crown an actual world champion at the end of the year.

Take this with a grain of salt, but I heard through the grapevine that Red Bull might pay Life $200,000 a year to stay with ST. They also might change their name to Red Bull or Red Bull Stars.

http://www.reddit.com/r/starcraft/comments/1b0icp/anonymous_person_leaks_blizzards_plans_on_4chans/

They're from a certain imageboard, so they should be taken with a big grain of salt, about the size of a moon.

It's interesting to read the past posts from that 4chan insider.

http://archive.foolz.us/vg/search/tripcode/!GKS1zrZdfk/page/1/

Says CJ might offer life 200k when his contract is up and that redbull might match it. Also says polt is getting 3k/month from cooler master. Other interesting things too if you keep reading farther back into his post history.

The funniest thing though is he says he wants to keep his identity hidden, but doesn't really do things to keep it hidden since he cites specific examples of meeting people and stuff. Such as a time at work when he said one of his co-workers asked him if he was leaking things and then he said he was forced to lie and told people to stop posting his stuff on tl/reddit. Well then all it would take is for that co-worker to read that post and put two and two together.

Very interesting read, he seems to have had a quite a few things right in the last 3 months. Unfortunately now that you posted his account on here I imagine that he wont be so active.

Korean players on FOREIGN teams will still compete in the regional tournaments... Just like Soccer.

There is League in Spain, Germany, France, England, Poland etc. But still players are not ONLY from the respective countries right?

For what people are saying you can play in whatever region you want, but can't switch between regions during the season. Might have a residency clause in there somewhere.

Reason why the foreigners in Korea are mad is because they are going to can GSTL after this season and Axiom-Acer isn't making the cut for the new Proleague coming in the fall. Startale, IM, MVP, and FXO will go to Proleague 100%. Dunno about Prime. HoSeo and Axiom-Acer not invited.

Basically a better version of WCS that takes into count big regional tournaments and the finals being played in a big stadium.

If that's true, Then it's good news imho.

If that's true, that's bye-bye Prime and Hoseo
Might as well be absorbed by the other teams and get zenex'ed

I was afraid that since he missed out on Code S, Mvp would show up in the South American leagues under the Jose Jonguero Havana or something.

I think making a big announcement of it means that it should at least be significant.
I expect no less.

So if this is true. We'll never see another Life vs Flash series at MLG again, because they'll be region locked to Korea if they also want to play in the GSL?

I knew that LoL was demolishing SC2 in Korea but THIS bad...it's just sad. I can't see how this type of investment is sustainable for Blizzard, or how the scene can support the absolute wealth of progamers in Korea. I mean, 7 KeSPA teams and even more eSF teams? That's hundreds of progamers in a scene that really can't support it...

Why isn't that type of investment sustainable for Blizzard?

You do know that they make BILLIONS of dollars annually from World of Warcraft alone? Blizzard can make two in-game pets for Warcraft and generate the extra income to inject this type of money into whatever they want. Mike Morhaime has publicly stated that Starcraft is his favorite Blizzard franchise, it isn't beyond the realm of possibility that the acting CEO and co-founder of Blizzard wants to use some of what they're making to try and take Starcraft to a new level.

Blizzard sponsoring eSports so that their own brand and title becomes even larger as a result? For basically pennies compared to their total annual revenue?

I understand the amount of money Blizzard makes. I don't see their investments in eSports being profitable. I don't see SC2 ever becoming what LoL is in Korea right now. I just think that they need to pull something else out of the hat if they want SC2 to succeed. A real foreign league (not tournament, league) has never been done before. I dunno, just something, something to bring the eSports fandom further without dumping it where it's not really wanted.

I would just like to stroke my e-peen and say I was kinda a little bit on the fringe of being right.

This idea has some merit behind it.
Imagine smaller national leagues. Then once a year a "World Cup" in which all the highest/best players from around the world meet up in an international tournament.
Much like the football World Cup (soccer) you would have qualifiers, even a team event 2v2 etc..
I think it would be pretty cool.
If it was in Korea I'd probably fly from Australia for it too.

There is a new Fomos Article "GSL, 스타리그 통폐합? 소문 무성한 블리자드 e스포츠 개편안의 진실은…" "The integration of GSL and OSL? The truth of the BLizz. E-sports Restriction" It contains some Blizz's standing against the rumors. I will translate this as soon as possible.

New information about the 4/3 announcement on FOMOS! (Translation inside)

This just appears on FOMOS's front page.

http://fomos.kr/board/board.php?mode=read&keyno=131151&db=issue

The news basically confirms TorteDeLini's information about the individual leagues. There will be GSL and OSL, and the results in two leagues are going to be counted as points toward WCS at Blizzcon.

But in this news, there are more information about the team leagues.

It says:

"Many people were worried that Blizzard focuses too much on individual league but abandons the team league. And people have expressed concerns that Blizzard left out KESPA, especially SPL.

Blizzard responds that first the amount of the money being paid to the Korean related parties is incorrect; second, the negotiation is among Blizzard, OGN, GOMTV, KESPA. No one is left out. All parties have made compromises in order to produce more entertaining leagues. Some of the reports are simply wrong because if team leagues are left out, the negotiation will not reach a final term. 'We are negotiating with the relevant parties of GSTL and SPL. I hope people don't misunderstand again, everything will be on April 3rd.'"

Translated based on Chinese translation.
