Smart move, why waste time in a tournament he has no realistic chance of winning when there is much easier money waiting in foreign events for him.

Gotta get paid. Can't be slogging it out in tough tournaments when you could be smashing foreigners for easy coin. I can see why people are mad, but if people are surprised they need a reality check. This is just how SC2 works.

IEM is easier than GSL so more chance of winning money. It is his main goal while he is playing SC2, this isn't a suprise. Also, GOM should just stop with these seed handouts for foreigners....let them qualify like everyone else if they really belong there. I get that they do it for viewership and everything, but it just looks bad and kinda makes them seem unprofessional when they are giving these foreigners a shot who don't really care when there are plenty of koreans who would die for a GSL seed.

Extremely talented, would have love to see him win GSL.

Seems he was serious when he said SC2 is about money for medical school.

It's the fucking IEM world championship, huge event. Up and downs is a very minor thing. He's still in Code A next season. Calm the fuck down.

That one spot is highly pursued by tons of korean pro gamers, whereas it was given for free to Stephano, and he squanders it.

Like I said earlier, I feel if he was committed to IEM WC from earlier, I guess it's fine, but if I were GOM, I wouldn't give seeds like that without more commitment from the player, I'd probably state as such in a contract or sth.

Or charge a hefty fine for ditching the tournament, yeah I think I'd do that

Meh, don't feel like he should prioritize IEM over GSL.
But oh well, money calls I guess.

He is going for the easy money after all, I mean he only has to play MVP, Golden, Dream TLO and Grubby...thats like a walk over group. I mean only 3 Koreans, the former WC3 champ and TLO.....EZPZ.......wait

I don't think he is good enough to win GSL, it was proven. He probably won't go far in Up&Down Match, so coming to IEM is the best choice

What a shame from a viewer perspective,
It is understandable though, as Stephano has to consider his winning chances.
Are there no foreigners the next GSL to root for then?

I wouldn't agree. It's certainly the hardest but I wouldn't say it's the most prestigious. I'd give that honour to Dreamhack which continually puts on an amazing show with epic games and makes an effort to be truly worldwide.

Lol DH may have good competition, but the competition level there is a farce. It doesn't even come close to the competition of mlg/ipl let alone gsl. DH isn't high on my list of tourneys to watch because the competition level is always too poor at them.

He's gonna lose ground if he fails at IEM. When playing in EG, money shouldn't be the motivation, since you get a monthly salary you can live from. EG sent one promising (Stephano) and one not-so-promising (HuK) contester to GSL. Obviously a failure. Stephano is just pulling consequences, no surprise to me - maybe he's on GSL level if he plays on top of his game, but that's not the point of GSL. The point of GSL is doing long-term high-level play. Stephano does not provide that anymore since his great strategies are being countered by a random soul train coming up.

Edit: Oh yeah, and EG curse :D
Edit #2: Long story short: foreigner still not equaling coreans. As long as the e-sports scene is not that big, it won't happen. So, foreigners should stick to foreigner tournaments and try to beat koreans there. One makes a point through that, too.

I dont blame him. GSL doesnt offer enough money to stick around. Stephano is better off to win 10 times as much for a 100th the effort in a single weekend compared to the enduring task of trying to win Code A or S in GSL.
Win. That's all that matters. Win. Nobody likes to lose.
