That isn't what he said.
He said BW survived because of Kespa's bullying, not because it was a good game.
First part of that sentence is paraphrased, second part is pretty much verbatim.

People who don't understand English jumped all over it because 'not' and 'good' were in the same sentence as 'BW'.

His message can be paraphrased more clearly like this:
Brood War did not survive so long solely because of its merits as a competitive game, but because it was propped up by an aggressive government organization (Kespa).

My english must be really bad, because that's exactly what i got from him. Thank you for summing it up.

So the ESF isn't really that much better than Kespa, neither gives a damn about the players.

I guess I could keep it simple so it's easier to follow. BW lasted for over a decade. That definitely defies the shelf-life of a game competitively. It had a decent following or else it would have caved a long time ago and something else would have replaced it sooner.

I know you're gonna pull some smartass answer like this.

BW does not defy shelf-life of a game competitively. It got popular since Boxer time, which is around 2002. Counter Strike was released before that time and still being played competitively in Europe until now. Age of Empire is still being played competitively in SEA and China right now. And hell, even dota, although it is a mod, was being played competitively since 2005 until now and still going very strong and 100% will surpass BW's time.

What BW did is impressive, sure, but not magical. It simply followed the rule of supply and demand. If there were no BW, other games would get popular in Korea anyway. jk if there were no BW, Boxer might have been KoF98 and made it an esports (provided SNK doesn't make new version every year and leave KoF98 alone like Blizzard did with BW, fuq SNK)

The main issue is that English lacks the precision of other languages (German as a great example).
The statement made no comment on the quality of Brood War as a game, it only stated that its success over a long period of time was independent of the game's inherent value.

I can say BW is still being played competitively right now even without KeSPA but not as a professional sport.

There's a difference between amateur works and having a governing body that gets television time and other exposure. These players are celebrities in Korea.

Before BoxeR there was Giyom. I'm sorry if you don't buy into the fact that KeSPA and BW helped in transcending the genre, but they did.

Look there have been quite a few blogs on this crap including some girl saying BW isn't magical in the title and it went on for over ten pages of people telling her exactly why it was magical.

You don't want to believe me or buy into it fine.

Many other people did and that's what matters.

I thought you people were ignorant what KeSPa really are, but then after hanging around with you folks I realized that you people were being willfully ignorant. I don't post in your BW forums anymore and you should be happy with that. What I am to you or others shouldn't really cloud your judgement on the subject, that goes against the entire premise of internet discussion.

Right because those other games also had prime-time cable slots for 13 years. Recognised by the ministry of culture and achieved a self-sustaining sponsorship based model whereby gamers evolved to pro-gamers with salaries. BW became a cultural phenomenon in Korea where it ceased being a game and became a sport.

There you are. Anyway, I have nothing against BW, it's just that I am entertained by the hardcore fans, with their elitism and conspiracy theories, and I was expecting a strong answer to JiPrime's heresy. I am disappointed.

No reason with arguing with you because it's always the same bullcrap and I've debunked you so many times it's getting old.

You want to try and go head-to-head with me again?

Okay hot shot. Go over my last 150 posts which I made within the last two days, requote them and try to tell me how ignorant I am. You want to deal with me then do it. Get rid of your stupid generalizations.

Your opinions have always been the same and for your sake I hope you grow-up sooner rather than later.

P.S. the reason you don't post there anymore is probably because everyone else laid you out there already.

I don't forget people like you and I'm surprised you lasted around here this long.

If the eSF now goes back to play in OSL i would be really mad if i were GOM. I hope Boss has the balls he has usually and just goes head to head with KeSPA. That shady shit really isn't good for the scene AT ALL.

A game being played "competitively" is not the same as being as popular as BW has been, drawing huge audiences consistently even in its decline; drawing huge sponsors, etc. BW's still being played competitively in China and may still be for some years, incidentally.

With the way things are going, I don't see the future being bright as we hoped for back at the esports vision PR show. I warned you all back then. KeSPa can't be trusted especially given their track record.
