What is Unit Preloader? Since the release of patch 1.5, a large number of users have been reporting stuttering issues in-game. Unit Preloader is a StarCraft II arcade map which builds every unit, casts every spell, and triggers all context-specific death animations to force the game to cache the effects. It's available under the arcade section as "Unit Preloader" and can be found by searching for "preloader". The map may also be useful as a tool for tournaments for testing or when setting up computers to avoid any potential lag issues.
tl;dr Map may help reduce game stutter. Search Arcade for 'preloader'.
Usage - Search for "preloader" on the arcade section of battle.net - Run the map once when starting the game
Found a bug? Have a feature request? You can help improve Unit Preloader by suggesting features or reporting any bugs you find. Here's how:
- Go to the Unit Preloader issue tracker.
- Use the Find issues search box to see if someone has already reported the bug / feature request.
- If there's no existing report for your bug, click Create Issue. If there is an existing report for your bug, feel free to add a comment.
- Title: Briefly summarize the problem. For example, "Missing effect: Phoenix graviton beam"
- Description: Please include the following:
- Required: Unit Preloader edition: HotS or WoL
- For missing effects, the name of the effect that is missing and any applicable unit(s)
- Optional: The game clock time (get this from the replay) that the bug occurs, if applicable
- Anything else you feel may be relevant
- Assignee: Leave this blank
- Kind: "bug" if you are reporting a bug, or "enhancement" if you are requesting a feature
- Priority:
- Blocker: Don't use this
- Critical: Bugs that prevent the normal operation of the map, e.g. lobby won't start, game crashes
- Major: Most bugs should be initially filed here, e.g. missing units, outdated abilities (if you aren't sure, use this)
- Minor: Bugs may be filed as "minor" instead of "major" for rarely-seen units or abilities
- Trivial: Purely aesthetic bugs, e.g. camera doesn't pan

I should mention that I originally got the idea for Unit Preloader from a unit tester replay made by Phoenixed that achieves a similar effect:

Realm availability Note: the same map is uploaded to all realms, but version numbers differ because of varying upload dates - NA: Available as "Unit Preloader v3.0" (latest) - EU: Available as "Unit Preloader v3.0" (latest) - KR: Available as "Unit Preloader v3.0" (latest) - SEA: Available as "Preloader v2.0" (latest)
+ Show Spoiler + Note: On Feb. 14, 2013, the map was branched into two separate versions: the main (latest expansion level), and a legacy version (Wings of Liberty). The latter will still be maintained with important bug fixes if necessary, but on a lower priority.
Originally available on NA. EU support added afterward, followed by SEA support as of 15:05 KST 23/09/2012
Latest Changes (update #7) https://bitbucket.org/jnkw/unit-preloader/issues Updated for Legacy of the Void Re-published HotS version for those without the latest expansion

Thanks a lot, I will check it out as soon as my computer starts running!
|
Awesome! Thanks for making :D

This is a really good idea. It's unfortunate that this isn't already done by default. I can't really comprehend why the game would be startled to discover that it's going to need to load the assets related to Gateways when a Protoss player is in the game. It seems like it should even be doable to load them into memory using a forked process at the beginning so that there's no additional wait time (I assume making the loading screen go faster is the reason assets are loaded on demand). With a reasonable ordering, there's no reason you couldn't have every asset preloaded in plenty of time for its first use in-game.

Is it only available on NA? I searched for "preloader" on EU but nothing appears.

Sorry I forgot to mention, it's currently only available on NA.

Oh god I love you thanks !

Could you please upload the map to MediaFire or something, if you're not able to upload it on EU? So the rest of the world can atleast access offline to it, would be good enough (I think)

I can just generate a replay file from the map and upload that once it's confirmed to cover everything. For example, it's currently missing the corruptor's active spell (which I've since added in).

You have to drag and drop it onto Starcraft II.exe, or copy it to [Documents folder]\Starcraft II\[Account name@#]\Replays\Challenge
Then you can access it from the replay browser under the "Challenge" tab.
|
I'm surprised no one has made this before... It's so simple, yet brilliant!
Nice work OP
|
If it's still not uploaded to EU, I can do that
|
doesn't work here
|
except you don't really need a custom for it to work, all you need to do is load up any melee game against a computer or replay, as these "stutter" issues only affect the first game after launch. if these "stutters" still occur, then theres no fix. it's on blizzards end, i.e., they must fix it in a patch.
back when i used a less powerful pc, i used to load up a custom game vs. an a.i. just to remove the stutter from ladder, but 1.5. has fixed that for me and for many others, so it would really not make any sense if this "custom game" should hotfix the issue, as it's a compatibility/optimization issue.
tl;dr: for eu users, just load up any custom game vs. an a.i., this will do exactly what this "custom game" does, if that doesn't fix it, then wait for a hotfix by blizzard.
|
Actually many of the animations load on demand, so simply going into a custom game will not help. This preloader is a great way to ensure everything gets loaded. I also find it pretty funny that the map description gets censored if you have the mature language filter turned on .

i loaded up a game of starcraft on both my pc and my laptop.
laptop:
GTX 260M i7-720 4gb RAM Alienware MOBO
pc:
(SLI) 3 GTX 560 Ti 448 (2gb) i7-3770K 16gb RAM Z77
difference:
pc 1st game = no stutter ever, no less than 120 fps during 200/200 engagements 2nd game = the same after preloader = the same
laptop 1st game = long load time, random stutter throughout whole game, annoying low fps 2nd game = no issues at all /quit game, launched again/ 1st game = random stutter again -after preloader = no issues at all
conclusion: preloader custom =/= melee custom for me personally.
|
I've been experiencing slight lag whenever one of my units died, hopefully this will fix the problem. Great idea and thanks!
|
You can't open the replay for the EU. Probably because you don't have the mod.
|
guys i'm sure blizzard will fix this soon(tm) lets just wait for blizzard
|
On August 09 2012 21:56 roym899 wrote: You can't open the replay for the EU. Probably because you don't have the mod.
I can't open it either on the EU server. What mod do you mean?
|
Oh interesting, you need the map in order to load the replay. I generated my own replay with my US account and then relocalised to EU and the replay plays fine. I guess you need to have the US map downloaded to run it.
|
Sounds great, I have been having lag spikes due to this problem from time to time. Not really important but sometimes if it's the final battle in the game and you need to micro perfectly, you can't afford lag, especially in tournaments.
Though I would like the map uploaded to EU, running a replay each time can be uncomfortable.
|
I'm not sure to get what it does : you "play" this map before a real game and you'll have laess lags?
|
It would be awesome if someone could somehow upload the custom map to the EU arcade section!
|
On August 09 2012 23:49 Lazzi wrote: I'm not sure to get what it does : you "play" this map before a real game and you'll have laess lags?
Pretty much yeah.
Every time you do something new like building a new unit starcraft 2 takes some processing power from the computer. For some PCs, this causes a slight stutter. Afterwards, even if you go into a new game, SC2 doesnt need to load to unit in another time, it stays loaded until you close down starcraft again. This map loads in all the units/effects at once.
And yeah I would really appreciate this map on EU as well !
|
I've made one myself last week which loads all deaths and all ability effects ingame (via using them). I preplaced a lot of stuff, made it attack, use abilities and killed every unit/building with all used death effects. How does your loader work?
|
It's cool to upload a replay but if we don't have the map we can't open the replay dude
|
Watching this on ultra with 2 fps made it look pretty badass.
|
Nice, hope you add it on EU soon
|
This patch simply made me unable to play the game, if someone would add it on EU or provide the map I would be thankful!

This makes such a huge difference-- thanks so much! Hopefully in their next patch that fixes problems caused in 1.5 Blizz will address this, but if not, I'm glad this is around.

Dear jnkw;
First, I just want to say that you are awesome.
Second, I would like to know if you would possibly be interested in having a few (at least 3) babies with me.
Thirdly, I just want to say thank you for this map. I might be able to ladder now without breaking any of my peripherals.
Last night I was doing an immortal sentry all in and as I was moving out, the game froze before I could ff around my army and a couple banelings blew up all my sentries. I almost broke my hand.
So lastly, I want to thank you for possibly saving me money on future medical bills. I haven't tried this yet, but from the posts above, it looks promising.
THANK YOU<3

I am in touch with someone who may be able to upload the map to EU on my behalf since I don't have an EU account. Stay tuned for updates.

jnkw, I noticed at the end of the camera sequence (which is hilarious, nice one) that you have mineral patches and geysers and the watchtower.
Do you have the gold patches anywhere? Or the high yield geyser? I doubt these are high intensity loads but for the sake of completeness.. =)
Also, what about adding the doodads that consist of particle effects? Mostly the weather-related ones. Do these load at map load or one you are in game?
|
Anyone still getting issues after doing this? I still occasionally get under 1 FPS sometimes on Low settings, when it was perfectly fine on Ultra settings before 1.5. Am I just out of luck?
|
EU and KR versions are now up! Sorry for the wait.

Done! There are also a couple of other minor additions that I forgot, like Terran burning/repair effects and all variations of the high yield mineral patches.

I'm not sure but think i still have fps drops cause of burning death animations. Any way to add them (and acid deaths) to a later version?

No, if you load a ladder map you aren't caching every single animation in the game like you are with this map. When you next start SC2 run this map twice in a row, the second time will have significantly less stutter.

I have eviscerate, acid, and fire deaths for zerglings, roaches, marines, and marauders (it's already in the map just slightly off-screen, but it should still cache). Are you experiencing stuttering for burning death animations on a unit other than those above? Actually now that I think of it I forgot the burning nydus death animation, but that's relatively rare.
Edit: Ah... I forgot the rest of the zerg units (infestor, queen, etc.) haha... I'll get on that.
|
Yeah in fact it was a queen burning down and caused the lag =)
|
Thanks for this. Any chance it could get uploaded on the SEA server? I know we can log into NA cross region but it's a hassle. I'm happy to upload it if that helps.

I think you should add small logo to 1st post, update arcade preview and loading screen
I think red-grey style will be more noticeable in blue Battle.Net interface. Also here you can see streaming loader icon, that you can see while something is in streaming process.
With that loading screen you're better place text at the left or right side of screen instead at the center
P.S. It's not Unit preloader, it's just Preloader. Because there are not only units, but also minerals, vespenes, buildings, abilities, etc
|
Simple amazing. Everytime I engaged in my first fight, whether it was drops or just poking at the front, my game would stutter and I would lose all my units. It completely negated all my micro. So glad you made this! Thanks!
|
Really nice map, fixed my fps drops, still waiting on 1.5v2 though, because loading a map everytime I wanna play (or once per day) kinda sucks.
|
Is this still necessary after the hotfix? So you load this up after every time you restart your PC? I think I just leave mine on sleep, so I never have to run this.. unless i restart, right?

Definitely run it after changing graphic settings. I haven't tested if running it while tabbed affects the process, I'll check it out later today.

Is it me, or does the Ultra have the beta-attack on the map? Not that it's something that makes the game stutter when it's loaded the first time, I just thought it's funny, as I saw it.

By Chinese server do you mean TW or SEA? If you mean TW it's already up, if you mean SEA I have someone who will upload it for me, just waiting on them right now.
|
Unfortunately this kind of thing is necessary. It's too bad but very well done. Works for me. Thanks!
|
This is so awesome! If you want to get a good sense of how much of a difference it can make, run the preloader twice. Unless you have an amazing, ridiculous, stupid, good computer, it will be wicked laggy the first time through (as expected). The second time should run like butter. What a brilliant idea.
|
Simple solution for a problem. i like it!
|
Awesome to just watch! Noticed a couple of things on replay... 1) One of the Ultralisk eggs in the lower-right doesn't hatch. 2) The transfusing queen doesn't get to transfuse everything she's supposed to before everything starts dying. Dunno if this matters, though? 3) A Spine Crawler roots near the top of the screen, but the Spore Crawler next to it doesn't (...and I presume the other two Spine and Spore are supposed to unburrow?) [edit] 4) Dunno if you want to Mothership cloak all the Terran and Zerg units and buildings...? And/or Mass Recall? 5) Dunno if the Point Defense Drone produces different animations against different missiles?
I also noticed the lack of burning buildings, but I notice that you saw that. (Don't forget burning bunkers... ;3 )
|
After losing countless of games due to having 1-2 second spikes in big engagements this is gold for me right now. 1.5 really screwed up the game quite a bit. Thanks for this!
|
Awesome, awesome custom, thank you very much!
I had just played a PvZ where I almost lost because when I went to engage my opponent who had a lot of banelings, I couldn't storm, blink back, or use any micro because there was a severe two second lag spike. So after that I did some TL searching and found this. Loading the map I had a quite a big of lag with the mothership spells and such, but after loading the replay again to see if there was an improvement everything loaded perfectly with no hiccups.
Thanks again!

Well at least for me i still experience some FPS issues right at the start of the game and during big battles that I didn't have before. The preloader worked well but I still have some small issues. I just blame 1.5 and my sub par laptop I play on.

I never had terribly significant stuttering issues with 1.5 (the map was largely done as a service to the community) so I can't say for sure if 1.5.3 makes a noticeable difference. If 1.5.3 really does solve all the issues, I suppose over time people will mention that the map doesn't make as much of a difference as it used to. I imagine, though, that some people might still want to use it for testing or being absolutely certain that everything is running smooth in critical situations like a tournament setting.
It should work if you alt+tab while it's running.

Would you guys be interested in making a Preloder map for WC3? Because I'm experiencing the exact same lag and stuttering problems in WC3 on my laptop.

I no longer experience any lag after 1.5.3, I assume this issue has been fixed?
|
Issue might have been fixed with 1.5.3 but I still think this "preloader" is useful, especially on older, slower computers, such as mine. I am going to use it Thank You jnkw!

Exactly, I always have this annoying problem. First game always loads slower and then, even after 1.5.3, first fee seconds of the game are a bit... hmm slower?

Please develop a unit preloader for HOTS. Before the latest patch everything was smooth on low settings. Now the game freezes for several seconds several times. Between these freezes the game runs smoothly.
So a preloader for HOTS is really needed.
|
BEST EVER!!!!!
I looked at all the comments and felt necessary to add a few more.
1. Run unit preloader and quit once it's done. 2. Save the replay 3. Load the replay and watch on 8 times speed
Each time you do this it will go faster and faster. I don't know the mechanics behind this but it was suggested to me and I noticed 100000000% less lag when running this as many times as possible.
I usually run it around 8 times.
To support more ideas for the makers I suggest they add a rewind feature just like replay. Maybe even loop features to auto do multiple runs.
As of now I just load the replay every time I run the game.
It's a no brain'er must use custom.
|
+1 bump for such an amazing tool/idea.
I'm fairly sure my lag issues have been relieved (slightly) , but I'm even more sure that this is more useful to me as a pre-ladder psyche up. Run once, I'm automatically going to be playing better. Even if it doesn't work as intended (and I'm fairly sure it does), I feel better as a person :D
Keep up good work.

Why dont games do what they used to and actuly LOAD THINGS in the loading screen instead of loading half the game and then trying to access the other unloaded half whenever you actually play?

I've been getting quite a few requests to port this to HotS. There are some complications with dependencies since the tools aren't complete in the beta, but I'll see what I can do when I have the time.

Thanks! Great thing you do for the community, fixing stuttering around the world!

Can't wait for this to be on hots. Doing matches has been painful....

Would be awesome, one of the last beta patches reintroduced the stupid patch 1.5 stutter.
Don't really understand what the heck Blizzard keeps doing with this issue and why it's back.

I don't think you have the phoenix gravity lift in there.

Reduce loading times heavily and I think another factor is that as computers get more and more advanced streaming data during the session gets more and more viable. Don't take my word for it though!

I love this tool, but it's hilarious that someone had to make this because the game doesn't do it itself ;_;
Thanks very much!

I've gotten a lot of requests to port this to HotS, but for a while I had a lot of other things on my plate. Finally, I have an update:
A couple of days ago I managed to solve the dependency issues that were preventing me from updating the map with HotS units. I can't publish it just yet, though, because there's a Battle.net issue preventing me from logging in with the editor to publish the map. I'll publish it as soon as I'm able to login with the editor.

I am also eagerly awaiting the HOTS beta version of the preloader. It's fucking ridiculous that Blizzard still has not fixed this problem with the game a month away from launch-- in fact I find it almost comical that my entire game freezes up for a second or two whenever I spawn a unit for the first time when I'm playing with low-medium settings on a top-notch PC.
|
Good news -- I have a somewhat functional beta version up on HotS. Right now there are a few known issues:
- Pressing Play directly from the Arcade won't work -- you have to select "Create Game" to create a lobby and then select "Play" from there (Arcade issue) - Loading screen is missing (editor bug, can't resolve this without making the map from scratch or until Blizzard fixes it) - Some HotS-specific animations are missing (I will add these in over time)
Apart from these, though, the map should be more or less usable.
|
Thank you
Finally a version for HotS!

Just loaded up the map, works great!
Thanks so much

I have Windows installed to an SSD but it's too small to store games on. SC2 is running on a WD 7200 RPM drive, which really shouldn't be causing these kinds of problems. From what I remember this only started happening after a big patch (I think 1.4 or 1.5) and it started happening to a lot of people.

FYI, since patch 2.0.4 you'll get stuck "waiting for other players" if you try to just "play". Instead, just create game and start manually. (Not sure if there's reason to use this, but as long as it doesn't hurt..)

I didn't change anything on my end so I'm tentatively blaming this one on the patch.
Also, at the end of the map the cinematic mode currently locks the mouse cursor. To exit to the score screen, press 's' (it's the hotkey for Score Screen that appears in bold).

OK, this issue is now fixed. Just pushed the fix to NA, updates to other regions may lag behind a little.

Which server? Are you running WoL or HotS? Are you loading the WoL or HotS version of the map?
|
im on HotS EU, witch doesnt seem to have a HotS version of the map, so i logged onto NA to do it (yay global play!).. but i could tell it was a beta version without up to date animations. Still, running it may have helped me somehwat, its hard to be sure; i may ahve had a few freezes after too.
This thread on the support forums (by mouz mana) with many people posting saying they have similar problems, leads me to believe its a widespread issue - very similar to the old one.. i remember seing a reddit post on the rpoblem reetly also, but taht was before i had took note of similar issues on my end, and now im unable to find the thread.

Because gamers got absolutely pissed off because of having to stop and go with massive load screens (anyone remember the old Tony Hawk commercials where no load screens between areas was a big deal?). That, and the size of game resources has increased much faster than the write speeds of memory, meaning that load screens would take a lot longer than the old ones used to.
Besides, unloading everything possible into RAM and using up valuable space before it's necessary is bad programming in general.

Yes, but probably not for a couple of weeks because I unfortunately have some major commitments right now that I need to take care of first.

I never had this slight freezing problem in WoL but it is near unbearable in HotS. I am glad there is a caching map now, but it gets annoying having to run it up every start up. I really wish Bliz would fix this.

No issues on my Machine, but if I had to guess, It's probably a windows issue rather than SC2 itself. Possibly, the default program for opening *.SC2Replay files got changed?

Not sure if this has been mentioned already, but after the preloader is done sc2 shows a message saying there are hotkey issues, and if you go and check the hotkeys the hotkey options basically show as if it is one of the beta versions of hots. Revelation shows on the mothership core, and there are upgrades that no longer exist in the game showing as well. The problem goes away as soon as you enter any other map/game after that though.
|
I can't believe this is still necessary =/

I just wanted to thank the OP for this preloader. I had problems with stuttering for a long time and running this seems to help a lot.
What I would like to know is, how many people use this? Why? Why not?

So basically in every SC2 opening, you must run preloader. Then it opens lobby like custom map. Then you can close it and go go laddering, am i right?

I use this, and i think i''ve posted my thanks already, because it is awesome. When i ladder i usually don't bother, but when playing with clan mates or in tournaments i always use this first and it helps a tonne

Yes, or you can play a replay of the custom map. That allows you to play it on higher speeds. But either a replay or just replaying it every time works.

If you upgraded your hardware between then and now that's probably the biggest change.

For some reason the preload problem came back for me with patch 3.7, so I'm really happy that this map exists :D
