Even though he only played one game this season, Kevin "QXC" Riley has long been a major figure in the StarCraft community. After graduating from college, QXC will finally be returning to professional StarCraft full time. The MCSL's Michael "Achilles" Dorrill was recently able to speak with QXC about his plans for the future, thoughts on recent meta-game shifts, and his brief time in Korea.
Excerpt: + Show Spoiler +Michael “Achilles” Dorrill - compLexity has just purchased a team house. What are you most excited about?
Kevin “QXC” Riley - A lot of the disparity between Koreans and Foreigners seems to be from the culture and atmosphere that surrounds their practice. Hopefully with a team house in place we can mitigate some of that and catch up in important ways to our most challenging opponents.
A - How will the house change the way you practice?
QXC - The biggest thing that will change is that there will be more interaction between players and hopefully a lot more discussion and custom games. Other people can often see our weaknesses much easier than we can so we can hopefully find some new insights that we wouldn't otherwise see. Also, it'll be nice to not have to worry about as much stuff so more focus can be put on actually practicing and getting better.

needs more starwars hype.
Love ya riley.

The man is back in town!!!!

Qxc is one of the most honest and straightforward pros I've ever heard who doesn't sugar coat anything. I really like this quote:
I'm not really sure. My skill level right now is lower than I expected it to be. If I can go and play good games that will be enough. I've still got too many ways that I need to test my own ability before I can make a good prediction of how I can do compared to others. Just shows how well he knows himself and his ability. Hope he can prove himself at MLG Spring!
|
I've been waiting for this day for awhile. Anyone who watched him stream back in the "Scan the island" days has to be happy now that he is able to actually focus on the game again. I think he will rise to the top pretty quickly.
|
QXC has a lot of potential as evidenced by how well he's played at certain moments in the past. I hope he does well cause he's a really nice guy!
|
Awesome to see QXC coming back. I always loved his personality and sense of humour. I wish you the best dude.
|
Is this a thing now? Interview threads with 1 picture, 2 quotes and then a link?
I love interviews with QXC. He's such a chill person.
|
Can't wait to see how far he can go! Easily one of the coolest guys in e-sports.

I saw this legendary game live... crap, that was way back when SCRAP STATION was a ladder map, and we had to worry about close positions shattered vs terran, or *steppes of war*
Wow, that brings me back.

he may be only returning to sc2, but he never left my heart...
scan the island!
|
Yay, was so happy when he took down rainbow in beta, he seemed unstoppable. Can't wait to see him dominating Koreans again.
|
I love ya, qxc. Hope you crush some face during your next tourneys! :D

>Even though he only played one game this season
Well he did win the CSL invitational beating KawaiiRice and Ostojiy.

party pooper.. good itv btw but thats to be expected from qxc, sexiest scholar in the bizz

I can't wait for him to get back into his top form, qxc's stream was always amazing. Gems like scanning the island and the "apple" build made it one of my favorites to watch along with his aggressive style.
|
Why doesn't he wear bandanas anymore?
|
Thank you for this! Can't wait to see QXC back in action!
|
QXC! Please stream more! nice attitude in the face of current terran metagame too. Hang in there!
|
What I like about QXC is that he seems to have the dedication to really be a top gamer. I have long said the reason Koreans are better goes beyond even environment, all the way down to culture. Koreans just value hard work more than westerners and it shows in the practice ethic of your average Korean gamer.
I don't know him or anything, but I get the sense that QXC has that kind of dedication if he decides that is what he wants. I wouldn't be surprised to see him become a top 5 foreigner pretty quickly after the move.
|
I like his personality and i think that he's one of the smartest players out there. I hope that his training will make him one of the strongest foreigners.
|
My favorite Terran is finally gonna start stomping heads. I can't wait.
Always loved QXC's style and innovation, and even my Protoss buddy loves QXC. I really hope he becomes the leading man for Terran foriengers.
|
excitied! a while back when he streamed + interacted he was my fav streamer. lets hope he'll be again (: gl qxc!
scan the island days <3 "I'm in yo base, siege in yo face"
edit:added last two lines

QXC is always my fav player. I love his mentality about the game and his skill level.
|
|
Nice. Can't wait to see him raise his level.

Man QXC has been getting interviewed so much as of late. The guy is actually very active in the community.
I wish him the best of luck this year. I really think he will be in the same class as Stephano, HuK, Naniwa, Sase, etc.
|
Maybe OP should mention THE ONLY FOREIGNER TO ALL KILL TEAM IM.
he's an all around great guy and fun to watch. gogo qxc!

Those were the days. My favourite stream easily back then! ---
Can't wait to see how he goes now that he is full time
|
Happy to see him back in it full time now. His innovation is always what stood out most to me, and with skill to execute he was always fun to watch.
|
You got this Mr. Riley, live up to that potential buddy!
|
Oh can't wait for the unending wrath of the almighty JLTD.
Watch out 2012!

Is the full link dead for anyone else?

Yea, I can't get to it at all. Can't get to EG's main site, either. Kind of a bummer, but I'm sure it'll be fixed eventually.

QXC taking down nerds and the EG website

I really like the way QXC practices/trains. He doesn't just mindlessly ladder all day and try to put in the "time." He often closely analyzes his replays and recreates certain situations (like an important battle) in a custom game. Then he tests the battle to see what he did wrong, if he could have won with better micro, if he could have won with one more medivac, if he could have one if a +1 upgrade had arrived 20 seconds sooner, etc...
I think more pros need to practice like this. Recreate specific situations and analyze/practice the hell out of them. For instance, use the replay resume app (or just create a custom modded game) and practice a late game TvZ where everyone is already maxed with broodlords, infestors, tanks, vikings, full upgrades, etc... That way you don't need to spend 20 minutes every time you want to practice your late game tactics and micro. Obviously practicing like this won't get you in the exact same situation as you would have been had you played the entire game up to the "late game" point, but I think cranking out 120 late game TvZ scenarios a day could certainly be very helpful vs. playing 30 full TvZ games.

Can someone please explain what this 'scan the island' thing is about, for those of us not in the know? I'm really curious

QXC Bandana man! This guy is so smart great to see him more active

Poor website, down it goes

It's just a meme that qxc fans came up with. qxc at the time was a very popular streamer for his personality and the fact that he actively engaged with the chat/people whispering him in game when most pros would just set themselves to busy and just show gameplay.
This was I want to say early 2011 when maps like Lost Temple and Scrap Station were still being played (on the ladder and in competitions) which include islands. If I remember correctly though I think it had to do the with the fact that when qxc was winning/enormously ahead and there was no reason for the opponent to stay in the game, someone brought up the possibility that the opponent had an island and that qxc should confirm this as their reasoning for not gging yet. I wasn't there when the phrase was first uttered or if it was even made by qxc, but it became an inside-joke for when he would just spam scan the islands on those maps when he was winning or when chat demanded it enough.

Return of the Bandana Terran! I hope he gets back to shape quickly.
|
had the pleasure of playing a few games with Kevin the other week and found myself up against the wall the entire time with his trademark aggression causing me all sorts of grief. It will be awesome to see his originality return to this age of turtling 2-2 pushing terrans

That's okay. giX is a Zerg player. He did beat STX in the first round of the losers bracket and is now playing State. Hopefully he can survive in the loser's bracket!

He just lost to State. Too bad.
