What kind of elitist crap is that seriously? You enjoy it more if only the true defenders of e-sports can watch this? I'm guessing you're one of the people who believed Sundance when he said PPV was needed for e-sports or it could not grow anymore (despite Dreamhack and most other tournaments completely disagreeing).
You where fed a lie so MLG could make more money, and you turned it into a devout belief. Good job man, show us that corporate indoctrination is still a serious problem.
You're not too smart, huh?
These companies like Dreamhack do NOT make as large of a profit as it SHOULD.

I never advocated what MLG did. I never advocated PPV. Just paying for a high quality stream. That's a way that people can/will support without actually being there.
Also, to everyone else, MLG *is* losing money.
In your first post (which also was the first reply of this thread) you mentioned paying for HD, in the following replies you just said "Pay for it", which strongly suggests the MLG way since you are also from the US. If the company providing the service is content with their decision so should you. Or maybe they should hire you - your decision obviously is better, no?
What the hell are you talking about? Keep the nationalistic shit out of it. Just because I'm from USA (just living here for a few months, anyways, not from) doesn't mean I care/support MLG. I explicitly said paying for HD, not paying to watch anything at all. A free Standard stream and a paid HD is something fine, and a way I WANT to support Dreamhack.
I'm fine with the decision, never said I wasn't, just would prefer to be able to toss something small their way, and get something out of it.
Drop it, not a big deal.
As I sarcastically tried to point out, it's quite safe to assume they have reasons for providing it for free.
And it's very innovative as the first foreign tournament to use booths and the couch to just give 2 examples. They've always delivered outstanding production.
Xenocide, DH is a huge part of Swedish gaming culture and they would stand to lose a lot of credibility if they adopted some sort of subscription model. And even with DH becoming increasingly corporate it should be noted that they still rely heavily on volunteers to run major events, which puts them apart from an MLG or a GSL. For example the network at the massive LAN party is set up by volunteers.
So, for now you'll basically have to live with free HD and support the tournament simply by watching or buying merch.

Then donate or buy some merchandise you idiot.
If you want your feeling of getting something you can always pretend you could've only gotten the HD if you donated.
Your entire argument comes down to: "I want to support E-sports so I should be penalized if I don't." but for anyone who does not regularly pay for watching e-sports (most Europeans as far as I know) it sounds like your telling them they need to start paying while the tournament organizers see no need for it, hence the flaming. Put more thought into your posts if you don't want to piss people off.
And that people keep calling you American is because of your consumerist attitude, ofcourse there is little difference between Americans and Europeans intelligence-wise but Americans will on average be less skeptic to corporate advertisement and logic (probably because you have to watch so much of them).
And that's what the Sundance argument is (e-sports = dead without PPV), corporate advertisement that you gobbled up and made into your own philosophy.

Sundance needed more cash because he wanted to do 'more' which was his excuse for PPV (which in this case was a pretty bad tournament, the Winter Arena), he NEVER FUCKING SAID MLG was losing money, parts of it where losing him money, like the stupid Halo shit he keeps wanting to plug, but SC2 has always done fine. And as I recall from the LO3 ep with Sundance both DJWheat and SirScoots called him out for being incredibly wasteful when it comes to the events themselves, and instead of cutting some unneeded crap preferred to go for fan money by screaming E-sports will die without it (and the second time that he's done it, first where the Gold passess).

Got some problems with this quote "2) Never said e-sports was going to die without PPV. Just said that more money = more events, which I want to see. There is no reverse-causal statement to that. "
Seeing that Dreamhack only did 2 events per year pre-Starcraft 2 with free streams and now with Starcraft 2 as one of the main games they added a couple of more events outside of sweden, how can PPV change that? If they had free streams beforehand, and now they do more events with free streams.
I think youre forgetting that Dreamhack is a LAN and not like MLG etc whos in it for the money (yes they need money from subscribers to pay for the events. DH doesnt.)

Mostly cheesy games? I can't think of many notable games that were very cheesy, regardless. That's not any organizations fault if it does happen. It's a simple fact that it had the most impressive lineup of any foreign tournament ever.
Down time? There were 4 streams going at a time, all had a game on. I experienced literally zero downtime.
No crowd is a cool thing, actually, are you saying HSC is a bad tournament, too? Sure, it's not needed for every event, but personal environment for the players legitimately does breed better gameplay.
Player interaction may have not been fully executed, but it certainly wasn't bad enough to call it a "bad tournament"
Stop arguing. We don't even really disagree. I think that MLG's format was problematic, so do you. I think content should be offered for free, so do you. Maybe HD streams isn't the best way to support the event, I just want some way to do it.
