Great to see so much support for this idea, and great to see Ironman also pitch in with a map of his own. Hopefully this will raise some eyebrows and even grab more of Blizzard's attention.

Dude, after that BS happened, and the general poor outcome for most of the Protoss at MLG, Im kinda over standard play.

So tired of seeing the same 1 base build (1-1-1) still handle most Tosses like a joke. Only reason to log onto SC2 anymore is for 6m/1hyg games.

Please don't turn this thread into a variant of the Elephant in the Room, where every time anyone does a one-base build and wins, it's time to come back here to complain about it.
Well, now I tell you, I never seen good come o' goodness yet. Him as strikes first is my fancy; dead men don't bite; them's my views--amen, so be it.

Honestly not a big fan of it. It has too many chokes/ramps I think which promotes the deathball style that we don't really want and is usually really bad for zerg. Also I don't like the natural layout, very small ramp leading into the natural which makes it about as easy to defend as a main, makes it so you cant really do much harass vs T/P until they're already on 3+ bases.

I really hope this never gets to see the light.

I never played Starcraft 1, and i think Sc2 is a great game as it is.

Explicitly saying in the OP u dont want this to be like SC1 and then reading the comments ala "trying this feels so much more like bw", "this is so much more bw-esque" just ... is somehow counterintuitiv. Why would u even want it to feel like Sc1? There is no need -_-

I am going to state that last weekend the Lone Starcraft Clash was so awesome with the current state. Have u guys watched Stephano vs. Polt? Great games. I was sitting on the edge of my seat watching this series. How can u even claim that these were boring? I dont get it.
MLG this weekend just about the same and we havent even reached the final day. Sc2 is a fast paced game and that is good. Longer games? No thank u. ~20 min are just fine

P.S. To the guys saying that 1basing terrans doing 1-1-1 are that great, espeacially Heart vs. Huk on Metalopolis: U do realise that Huk made made so many mistakes and quite frankly played kinda bad, right?

Sc2 is a great game, what 6m is trying to do is make it better. Stephano vs Polt is awesome to watch, why? Because when Stephano and Polt play, they are doing multipronged, multi engagment battles all over the match. Their matches are not over in one big deathball engagement, but from winning many small victories. This is what 6m is trying to promote.

I love the idea. I'm thinking this idea doesn't even have to be implemented all at once, or not at all - there are ways to bring this idea about in gradations. I'm thinking:

-Varying the number of mineral patchs per expansion. Give your main 6m2g, your nat 7m1hyg, and your 3rd 7m2g (as an example). There are a number of ways to change the resource collection rate to favour the type of game you want. If you want to encourage players to take quick 4ths, make the fourth yield 8 mineral patches to the other expansions 6, for example.

-Vary the distance between mineral patches, or more fruitfully, the gas gysers to shape the resource collection rate you would like. Give an expansion 6m2g, but change the distance of one or both gysers so that you require 4 workers instead of 3. The resource collection rate is the same, but you max out your base 2 workers later.

-Why are gold patches not mixed in amongst regular mineral patches? Why not make a base 4m2hym2g, or 5m1hym2g for example? If you're worried about the effect it has on opening build orders, place the gold patches further back or to have fewer overall minerals, so that effect is diminished. Once again, you can control the resource collection rate per base to the effect you desire.

-What about having a regular 8m2g base, but having 2 patches that are ill placed -eitherdirectly behind another mineral patch, or far away enough so as to increase the number of workers you need to acheive saturation?

What I'm trying to suggest here is that if 6m2g or 6m1hyg doesn't work (perfectly) to acheive its desired result, there are ways to modify/experiment with the maps in question to achieve the exact result you're looking for.

You really didn't read this did you and its even more obvious you never played brood war so you didn't have to tell us. When he talks about brood war hes talking about how people expand faster and there are more skirmishes around the map. Just because you thought 1 game was exciting doesn't mean there isn't GLARING issues with sc2. Look at pvt for instance, there are usually 5-10 minute lulls on a regular basis in that match. Go watch Stats vs Reality PvT recently and tell me BW doesn't play out better.

Not trying to. Just expressing my preference for 6m/1hyg over Standard play as on now. MLG is just adding the icing to the cake.

hey Barrin if your trying to have a 5 map pool, have you played Redstone Fortress and Arrival? They are pretty good maps imo and work better than the ladder modified maps.

So youre basically denying facts that what made BW a good RTS game (read: Real Time Strategy, not making SC2 into BW), wont be useful in any other RTS game that is extremely similar to the predecessor.

Im sorry, but I dont agree. Just because you read a lot of players stating things like "feels more like BW", etc, doesnt mean its devaluing SC2. We like SC2, we also wanna see SC2 become as good as an RTS as BW was.

The difference between making SC2 like BW, and making SC2 into BW are two different things. BW had a good core, nothing wrong with trying to promote that strong core into SC2 as well.

This is an awesome Idea. I kinda want to organize a tournament with this game type.

I foresee it becoming like Dota in warcraft 3. Its own thing inside the game that has its own community etc.

It was mentioned that mutalisks come out fairly quickly (by 8 minutes of zerg is committed) rather than the usual 10 minute mark. Does this mean the high yield gas is too much? Or do you think blizzard would need to lower the income harvesting?

Unfortunately, things like fast cloak and/or air come quick if there's too much gas, but are dealt with with minerals. I'm not sure if it's worse with 2g or 1hyg, though.

Out of 11 test games so far on Cross Point (all of them were enjoyable to watch), this was the most epic game:

PvZ. Very macro-oriented (5-6 bases each), and a lot of harassing and multi-attacks.

http://drop.sc/141542

Unfortunately, one of them left in the end because he felt he lost... still an epic game nonetheless, and reveals how positional play becomes a huge factor with 6m1hyg on a map like this.

Enjoy!

great article and i fully agree. hope someone listens to it, but i think its hard to realise since it has a huge impact of the game its u most likely have to begin at a very early point in the game.

but sometimes im really tired of the very turtly style of, its unbelievale how much stuff u can get out of 3 bases o_o

it's not a problem. The mutas come quicker but there are WAY less of them so static defenses work really well to fend them off
