If you look at the Jobs page on the Blizzard website you'll see a ton of openings in the Battle.net team, a lot being urgent. I guess that a large part of this will concern D3 and its integration with Battle.net, but I can imagine that Blizzard in general was not happy with how Battle.net was doing in general.

Don't get me wrong, I'd LOVE LAN support, but I'm not seeing it here.

We believe this will primarily be used by people in internet gaming rooms, offices, dorm rooms, and local tournaments where you just want to find the guy sitting in the desk next to you. But it only means that you would be able to find players that are physically close to your location, and make customs with them - however, the connection would still be through battle.net, not through direct peer-to-peer, so it really has nothing in common with LAN. The latency will be the same as always, and multiplayer won't work if battle.net is down or if there's no Internet. While it will not be LAN in a classical sense I think it will in all important matters function like that. It will probably only use Bnet to find games and for authorisation but will probably use local connection to exchange data needed for the match to play out. It will for sure reduce lag and increase stability. Only total internet loss might now create problems for tournaments A big assumption you make The only logical one. What do you think this feature will be used for that current battlenet does not already provide? Well, considering Blizzard's post is talking about social & communication, this will be used just for that : Play with people near you. So if you're playing on your university campus, you will be able to play against other students, which is nice for the social part of the game ("hey, I played against him last night, blabla"). Let me quote Blizzard's post : We believe this will primarily be used by people in internet gaming rooms, offices, dorm rooms, and local tournaments where you just want to find the guy sitting in the desk next to you Really, I see 0 clue that they will change anything to their network code with this. I really want LAN support, but I'd be VERY surprised if this was coming with this change. You can already play against people from your office/dorm/whatever through custom games. And if you think they will change ladder so you can play only against "local" people or even with greater chance to play against local people you are smoking something strong. No, this feature can only grant improved networking protocols for local people to provide something new. You're going to be really disappointed when the patch come out. There is no LAN in this whole announcement. The only thing the announcement says is that "ip proximity" will be a new (optional) metric for matching people. Custom games let you play with people you know, "geographically close game" let you play with people you don't know but who are in the same area as you (and therefore you might get to know them, that's the whole point). Trackmania (a car racing game) had something similar. They had a tree of "rooms" to find games. The room were subdivided by continent/country/county/city, so you could choose to play with people from your city/region.

Wonder if it will come with any balance changes. Can't wait for the full patch notes now.

I take offense to that! OT: Blizzard is either demonstrating the amount of improvement they have made or are overextending themselves, especially if they will attempt to walk the walk.

First, we’ll allow players to resize their chat windows to fill a larger portion of the screen. We’ll also remember the chat channel you were in as well as the position of that chat channel on your screen for when you next return to the game. This will allow players who want to recreate something that feels a lot more like Warcraft III or the original StarCraft to build their own interface that looks a lot like those older games. We’re also working on a feature that will help players connect with other players and games that are near their location (connecting through the same IP). We believe this will primarily be used by people in internet gaming rooms, offices, dorm rooms, and local tournaments where you just want to find the guy sitting in the desk next to you. Although this may not be ready in time for the release of patch 1.5, we do intend to have this available by the time Heart of the Swarm ships. A step in the right direction but there's more needed - the 3 message limit is really really really really really really really really annoying - better clan support - clan channels so clan leaders can actually moderate the chat instead of have idiots log in and troll, and then have no way to deal with them.

Wish they would bring battlenet into the 90's atleast, with their resources they could easily afford to make it a post y2k experience ^^ Maybe they just want me to ponder how something that was free in the early 1990's clearly outclasses something you pay for in 2011.

From what I understand it's basically, play vs people in your area. It isn't lan, but with it you'll have more chance to play someone in the same town/campus as you as to say, me in east Canada playing against people in California.

They are obviously not making the game better, but we should still keep pressuring Blizzard to make the game even better! For those of you who haven't already read it, there is an amazing thread about Breadth of Gameplay which is also worth reading, and possibly trying out! I agree with the sentiment here, SC2 is no where near finished in terms of how good it could potentially be. I'm really looking forward to what we will see 2-3 years from now.
