Alex is verbose, and you owe it to yourself (and the rest of us) to read the statement in its entirety. Remember, when making comments/claims to provide proper evidence, facts etc. Arguments based on incorrect assumptions, facts and straw men, will be dealt with swiftly. If in doubt, PM a mod or ask IRC. Do NOT spread misinformation, when in doubt, check your sources.

In short, be smart.

Thank you for posting this. As much as I like esports, I still think the scene has a lot of growing up to do. The people defending Orb in this thread is disgusting. Look, I have no problem with Orb. He is a good caster and can act very professional when he needs to be but his behavior over the last couple of days is completely inexcusable and there needs to be outcry over it. I think this ordeal has humbled Orb and I still hope he continue to stick with the scene and redeem himself.

I'm not surprised at all; leave it to an entitled silver-spoon douchebag to make a business announcement into a mass of PC intellectual masturbation. Seriously, all this needed to be was a few paragraphs of "Orb did something unacceptable, so we fired him. Sorry to all and enjoy the rest of our event, P.S. please stop sending complaints to our sponsors now."

Why was he banned for this? Just curious.

Really? You don't know? It's funny when people on TL say "Go back to reddit." Like what does that even mean anymore? Team Liquid and Reddit aren't even distinguishable anymore.

I would implore you Mr. Garfield to reevaluate your approach to the issue of racism because I believe it's fundamentally the wrong philosophy that we as a society need to achieve the ultimate ideal: total eradication of racism. Focusing on the context and the message that people are communicating and not the words themselves is the proper ideology.

I would implore you that you are missing Garfield's point. He doesn't want the word to be dis-empowered, and he finds the cavalier and casual use of the word by nerds to be a slap in the face to all the people that have persecuted with it. For it to enter the lexicon of everyday language is ignoring everyone that it offends, and only deepens and widens the racial divide.

Pretending that words don't matter, or only matters 'in-context,' just ignores racial issues, and doesn't 'eradicate' anything.

That's absurd. The word only has meaning as it exists in the vernacular. Words have undergone changes in meaning in English for hundreds of years. English itself is only a vernacular language of the common folk.

To suggest a word should be frozen in time and given deference is only perpetuating racism and growing the thoughts associated.

No word has meaning on its own in a vacuum. You can't say that word to somebody with zero English experience and expect that by its euphony the person will recognize the sounds as being racist. That's total ignorance.

On top of that, black scholars have explained the use of that word by black people themselves as a means of them re-inventing the word and changing the meaning to something positive.

Pretty hypocritical from EG. I don't know how you can condone your employees using homophobic slurs and making death threats to people and at the same time fire someone for using a racial slur. I'm not saying you should allow any of these things only that you treat all the situations the same. Seeing as you just hired him it's in your financial interests to let him go before you invest anything in him. That being said your whole post is P.R. bullshit, you fired him to secure your paycheck and that's the end of it. You didn't fire him because of your own huge moral standing or you would have also fired idra for making homophobic statements and huk for making death threats(but hey maybe you're stupid and you think any of those are worse than the others). Lost a lot of respect for EG today not because they fired him but because they gave a bullshit reason why. Good luck in your future endeavors orb, hopefully you learned a lesson on acceptable public behavior(I'm sure everyone learned a lesson on that today). Hopefully this also prompts organizations to establish a set of ground rules on whats acceptable conduct for their employees, still not 100% confident this was handled correctly but hey it's business.

Alex, thanks for the post. I have respect for EG now where I previously wasn't much of a fan.

As a teacher of Cultural Studies with an interest in history, I respect your willingness to patiently discuss the baggage associated with the N-word. I also I am intrigued by the cyber-black-face of that Counter Strike team. That wouldn't go over well if they actually donned the makeup (see "The Real World" controversy).

This is real stuff and as an older SC2 player, I have been patiently waiting for this community to grow up. This is a step in the right direction.

Just because he is on the stream doesn't mean that he's free to do whatever he likes. For example on the Live Stream link on TL, Idra would probably (?) be linked to as "EG.Idra" as opposed to just "Idra". Secondly and I am not sure if this is true but his twitch.tv page might have the EG name on there somewhere.

More importantly, as a "public figure" he needs to conduct himself in a more professional manner. It's the same with any athlete. If Lebron James played starcraft 2 and streamed himself calling people fa---t, then you can bet that he'd get in a lot of trouble even if he's not doing anything even remotely related to basketball.

I personally couldn't agree more. I wasn't offended by his words at all, just disappointed. But my disappointment wasn't just in orb, but really in a lot of the community. The amount of people here on tl and also some pro's who were so quick to defend him. I don't want to be associated with a community that finds this blatant racism (which it is) okay. I'm glad EG removed him. I don't wish any more ill upon Orb, and I really hope this isnt the end to his career, and that he grows from it.

people who get offended by a word are not the kind of people i would want to be around anyway, that is the most self-righteous thing i have ever heard.

I like orb, and his casting isn't shabby. hopefully he does well in the future.

I share EG's sentiment that they need to maintain professionalism in the industry and set standards for what is allowed, and what isn't (especially depending on the severity of the case). Setting precedents is good and will only help the whole SC2 scene as a whole.

... But I also feel that since Orb didn't say these things during the time he was with EG, that they are walking on a fine line by firing him. On one hand, he didn't say these offensive words while casting for EG master cup but he also lied and got extremely defensive by posting on reddit/twitter.

Although Alex's posts makes it seem as if they had the intention of letting him go once they determined that he actually said what he said, in which case I think this was a slight over-reaction because I think he's a decent caster and had potential/could have changed or at least worked on his PR to make it not-this-awful.

Oh well, I'm sure this isn't the end for orb; he'll probably just have to start working back up slowly again.

Oh so one is more "acceptable" than the other? How do you think homosexuals feel about what you just said? It is probably true but that doesn't mean it's the way it should continue to be. It's pretty obvious that saying faggot should be no more acceptable then saying nigger. And if you fire an employee for saying one of them you have to fire another employee for saying the other one. ESPECIALLY when you(Alex) rant on about how you believe it is so wrong to utter such terms.

The funny thing about the word "nigger" is that it seems to offend white people more than black people. To all the people in support of Alex's view point (and to Alex himself), what are your opinions on black rappers/comedians/people using the word freely and without consequence?

Call a black guy "nigger" IRL and be prepared for an assbeating. That's all there is to say about that. They find it very offensive.

Now, blacks do call their friends "nigga" sometimes but that word is different. My black friends will say to me "what up my nigga?" and I'll say it to them if I know they're cool with it. But I wouldn't say "my nigga" to a black guy I didn't know.

That can be said for about any friendly slur. I think it's sad how touchy this 'mature' community is becoming.

I was actually hoping that the community would grow up after this, but you're probably right. The anonymity of the Internet brings out the worst in people, and it's about time that we stop tolerating it. This incident probably won't fix the community overnight, but I've always felt the racist/homophobic/sexist/generally disrespectful part of gaming culture that refuses to go away is the single biggest limiting factor on the growth of professional gaming.

it's the bare truth. that may not be what motbob feels but it's an absolute truth (at least in america):

you say faggot and you will get a slap on the wrist. you say nigger and there will be a shitstorm.
