In a brand new MLG series hosted by Chris Puckett, several personalities from MLG and other areas of the eSports/competitive gaming community will come into the studio to answer whatever questions the community has. The debut episode of the series is with MLG CEO Sundance, who dives into multiple topics including Starcraft 2 on the center stage instead of Halo, other games added to MLG including Fighting and MOBA games, prize purses, and a sneak peak at how the 2012 season will look.
The second episode will be taped today at 5 PM ET. State of the Game's JP McDaniel and Live On Three's Rod "Slasher" Breslau are the featured guests. Ask Us Anything!
To have your questions answered, tweet them to @MLGFAQ (http://twitter.com/#!/MLGFAQ) and your question will be asked if time permits. Make them good.
If theres no fluff, could you please have a serious discussion with Sundance about the MLG prize pool? They get much more income than other leagues, but still manage to pay out less, AND the other games get more? It just seems ludicrous.

This has been discussed about forever. And they said they promise for a much needed increase. Plus grand final is 50k to the winner whats not to complain?
Man I don't have a twitter but can someone ask about the MLG bracket/group system and how they plan to change it so the first MLG doesn't mean so much more than any MLG after that in terms of points and placings? Along with the korean invite system completely making is extremely hard for open bracket people to get points thus stagnation at the top.

No, sundance said if he sells 100K memberships he'll go ahead with the increase.

He said he'll increase it this season if they get 100k asap, but the prizepool will still increase for next season.
- MLG formatting next year/prize pool/distribution. - Continuation/reformatting of LXP next season. - Their view on Koreans and NASL. - Why does Idra always play first :D. - Their views on the three big MOBA games and how they'll affect the scene. Also which one they'll support. - Anything that they've been disappointed with in the SC2 scene.

Work unfortunately gets in the way of me participating in the show D:
no twitter but basically the only thing this show should ever be talking about is when the prize money won't be a laugh. Sundance has it backwards, we don't have to buy shit to "earn" a decent tournament, he has to put on a show that is worth paying for. Especially considering how much money SC2 is making him RIGHT NOW.
Lol when Puckett said he would like to cast sc2 in the future I went like "poor guy won't know what's gonna hit him " Fortunatly he understood quickly that casting a major event would not be a great place to start lol
I don't use Twitter, but I'm dying to know who's decision it was to have your hostess do that MLG mug bit with the Dr. Pepper. I know one of you orchestrated it. My friends and I were yelling at the screen to drink from the fucking mug already. The outrage.

Well he did fall from being runner up to the MLG national champ Jinro to being just an open bracket player =/
I know where it came from. Considering most SC players despise the extended series rule, I'm sure we could advocate change if we really wanted to. As the finals get more and more anticlimactic there will be no choice. Fortunately it didn't happen last time, but I see it being a problem more often than not.
extended series is the least of the problems. the worst is the abomination of point distribution so that people never fall out of groups after going 0-5, 2 events in a row. Get ranked in an early event with a fraction of the competition = lose out the season while staying in group play. It's disgusting.
edit: just read its being changed? Hope that's confirmed! Would make MLG so much better even though it's already great for the most part.

Extended series is staying, but point system is being revamped.

We learned some lessons, as we have every year in nearly 10 years of doing these events, and we're excited to apply to them to all of our titles for next year, especially sC2

I'm not going to debate the issue here, but we feel strongly that a double elimination bracket has a memory.
OUTSIDE of that particular issue, we are addressing and changing everything else, per my post above.
I've grown used to the extended series after following MLG for so many years. You guys are gonna have hard time converting these folks, But hey it's you're tournament your rules.
Doesn't matter if you've grown used to it. I'm going to stick by my stance and say in a few years time they will re-think this stance.
I can only recall a few finals in SC2 that really caught my interest. Most of them have been very one-sided affairs. It's a really big turn off when the games leading up to the championship bracket are more entertaining.
It is what it is. They lack time already and this is there way of cutting down time. This is something that won't go away and the format will always be changing.

Huge misconception. We do NOT use extended series for time reasons. We use it because we feel it is superior.
Agree or disagree with its merits, I just wanted to dis-spell that idea.

Considering the open bracket is sometimes all over the place and with the delays (they will happen regardless). I have a hard time swallowing that one. Besides that, I recall a few of your MLG higher ups talking about how there isn't enough time for such things before. For example, the ten minute leeway and the fact you have to run a tight ship. I'm going to have to dig up those comments. Just need to remember who said it. Might have been in a blog with regards to the DGs and W.O.s.

The biggest issue with extended series is that if the finals is an extended series, it sucks, the player up 2-0 is very likely a huge favourite and it just makes from a spectator perspective it crappy.
BO3 finals in general.... sucks.
edit: dunno why people say its time saving, in general extended series will make for a more total amount of games O_O;

I am dumbfounded.
The open bracket's biggest opponent is lack of LAN. We are dealing with 70+ live internet connections on the floor. When your show moves from location to location, the internet will ALWAYS be a variable. Sometimes it causes delays. Sometimes it is seamless.
How do you tell if you are registered for the event correctly? I signed up a while ago and got an email today telling me to complete the online registration today. I went to the site, but I had already entered in the information. Am I signed up correctly? How do I know?

oh man... it's gonna be great when you get asked about extended series during SOTG live at Raleigh in front of the crowd haha.
I don't think MLG really thinks extended series is superior. They may say so publicly but I think they use it just to be different because no other tournament uses that because it's a terrible rule. They use it to stand out from the crowd.

Oh believe me I know where they got the rule from. It's borrowed from the fps games they use it for and then they try to apply it to a completely different genre of game where it makes zero sense to use.

Why does it make sense for CS but nof SC?
because they can't handle being down in a series? idk, just my guess.

The first time an underdog comes out from behind in the extended series to win a championship, you'll change your tune. Fucking exciting when that happens.
I've got an interesting question, and I tried to ask it as eloquently as I could via Twitter, but it has quite a few limitations.
Has MLG considered reducing the number of players seeded into Pool Play based on MLG Points for Starcraft 2 to the Top 12? You could then host an Online Qualifier for 4 spots in Pool Play, as well as leaving room for 4 Korean Invites, and then 4 Open Bracket players.
This would have quite a few benefits from what I can think of: 1. Players "fresher" on the Starcraft scene have a better chance of coming into Pool Play, rather than so many players that really haven't kept up with the game (I'm not going to name any players I can think of, that's rather rude.) 2. Gives MLG a chance to acquire a LARGE amount of high quality, exclusive content before EACH MLG event. A 64 player Online Qualifier for MLG, which is a very prestigious event would yield an insane amount of talent clashing in what is sure to be some incredible series. 3. Imagine the hype of a rematch between someone who grabbed a Pool Seed in the qualifiers coming up against the player they eliminated, after he fought his way back in the vicious Open Bracket.
Just look at the TeamSpeak TL Open series. An online tournament with barely any prize money, and the spectacular players we see turn up for the glory alone is astounding, imagine if the prizes were 4 precious MLG seeds for hitting the Semi-Finals.
As the above, except make it 8 people advancing out of the open bracket and seeding the better open bracket players based on (reworked) mlg points forward a round would be just about perfect
Love Virgil's idea. Definitely a great way to keep those pools fresh and, hopefully, more competitive. It's so disappointing and lackluster to see multiple people go 0-4, 0-5 in the pools.

Just my two cents.
Well from the first episode with Sundance, he mentions how 2012 includes plans to change MLG from a thing happening a weekend every couple of weeks into a 40ish week long thing with seasons, so online qualifiers may very well proceed in that way.

I didn't see this, so thank you. I really hope that doesn't effect the amount of live events we see, as someone traveling to MLG Raleigh this weekend.
In regards to another post: Yes, It's really disappointing to see players that are clearly NOT able to compete with the current top players getting seeded into pool play, while the Open Bracket continues to slaughter better players.
With LESS players seeded based on the whole MLG season (which is quite long in SC2 evolution), only the better players remain and more players are able to play their best (especially Koreans and Europeans who can't make EVERY MLG) without having to go through the slaughter that is the MLG Open Bracket.
As it is, with 16 Players seeded by MLG History and 4 Korean invites, and then 4 Open bracket players, we're seeing trends of Koreans taking groups undefeated, and then 1 other player taking the group convincingly, and then the 3 other players play pretty sub-par, and then the Open Bracket player comes in and shows up the 3 sub-par players in each pool (granted there ARE pools that don't go this way).
I'm tired and rambling but I think MLG could even get away with TWO online qualifiers each rewarding Pool Seeds to both players in the finals. It gives everyone a bit of benefit, except perhaps players that don't quite belong in pool play, but find themselves there anyway. We get more content from MLG, MLG gets more viewers more frequently, and better players end up fighting it out in pools at the live events!

The email went out to all SC2 Players for Raleigh. If you had already completed the Online Registration, you didn't have to go to Team Builder. The email was sent so everybody knew the check-in times, details of the event, etc. You should come to check-in on Friday between 10:30 AM and 5 PM to pick up your player wrist band.
