I think that works best. This means everyone who bought the game gets thoroughly ripped off. I don't really care about missions/decals/portraits/challenges.
Also, it sounds like there isn't a friends system in the Starter Edition. All the new kids will probably just get hammered by random people who actually own the game. Will there be a way for people with the full version be able to play with their friends who own the Starter Edition (without simply randomly jumping on custom games and hoping for the best)?

You can play against anyone in custom games, including P and Z players...
This is a good thing, but I don't think it'll bring in all that many players. However, it completely opens the gate to hackers. People don't just cheat or hack for ladder points, contrary to popular belief.

I read through this whole thread looking for the answer, but it seems from the OP the answer is no. It says something to the effect of lacking a party system makes it unable to make arranged games, but it didn't specifically mention invites.
Edit- You can invite your friends with starters to customs! YESSSSSSSS!!!!

I can't believe people are saying starter edition should have access to the ladder. DO YOU NOT REMEMBER THE DROP HACKERS USING TRIAL ACCOUNTS?!
T_T

Good thing Blizz' did there; makes it easier to get some friends into SC2, thumbs up! [;

Hopefully this will get my friends into the game... finally.
Kind of annoying how most people who never played an RTS will simply toss the thought away and go back to their mindless FPS games :-/.
This will hopefully change the mood among most non-RTS gamers. Great move, Blizzard!

Even if it's randomly just entering custom games and trying to get matched up, isn't it relatively easy for the host to keep kicking people until you get your friend in the game?
|
Maybe my girlfriend will get into starcraft as well...here's to hoping. I got her into WoW, but that game is much more diverse in the things you can do.
|
So..... next step LAN edition? ^______^
Custom games only and no Blizzard maps?
|
Free replay viewer, awesome.
I hope one can invite a trial player to a custom game... it's really the only way I could see myself convincing someone to buy SC2.

lol, I'm so gonna download the HOTS starter edition, I play zerg anyway, I don't like the ladder and Xel'naga caverns is the most popular map on EU so I won't have a chance to play another map anyway, the campaign is really easy to crack... so, good job blizzard.

He's racist.
He saw the OP was Russian and assumed this was a hacked version.

This is a great move by blizzard and should be 100% endorsed by the community.

i highly doubt there will be starter edition for HotS and LotV. the starter version is supposed to simply be a teaser of what the real thing is, that way people will want to buy it. see it as a demo, so it's highly unlikely that they will release a demo of the expensions.

can you add players to friends list and message other players on the starter edition?
|
The only thing that bothers me is that people who will transition from the starter edition to the real game are probably going to want to stick with terran, saturating the player pool with more terrans than we already have.

It'll primarily be in the lower leagues in which that is already the case. Sadly, this will always be true since WoL is the Terran 1/3 of the game. With HotS the default race for the campaign as well as similar promotions will be Zerg which will likely promote more Zerg players. Hopefully in the end it'll all balance out as each race still has its own unique appeal.
