Note: Editing your SC2 files is against the ToS, and nobody but yourself will be responsible for anything that happens due to file editing. However, It is my understanding that you will not be banned for modifying your installation unless you are giving yourself some sort of advantage during gameplay.

After searching around on TL a few times for any information on people that have already done this, I decided to make my own thread since it seems un-covered. Also over at this thread people were asking how to get this done.

Today I decided to replace my Protoss music with the old Protoss music from BW, and was super happy with how easy it was and how nice it turned out.

+ Show Spoiler [Optional Information] +
An mpq file is basically a folder system just like all the other folders on your pc. Blizzard created mpq files as a way to package together all their files, sort of like a .zip archive. So in order to replace any file with another within the mpq, you just need to replace an old file with a new one that has the same filename and file extension. You can open this mpq archive with an mpq editor (since Windows cannot do it alone), and then replace anything you like. Often times the files within the mpq will have odd names. In instance that this happens, you use a listfile which is a file that contains a list of filenames, so that when you use the mpq editor to open an mpq file some of the filenames have meaningful names.

To get started download an mpq editor from here. Be sure to use the proper listfile.

You'll also need the BW music files, which you can download here: BW Terran Music; BW ProtossMusic; BW Zerg Music. If you wish to replace other sound files, I suggest getting a copy of Brood War somewhere and extracting the music yourself. You can do this with the mpq editor and just opening the BW mpq, navigating through the folder system, and dragging out whatever files you want. It's really easy.

The music files for SC2 are found in StarCraft II/Mods/Liberty.SC2Mod/base.SC2Assets. Once you open this file in the mpq editor, navigate to Assets/Music. All of the SC2 music files are on .ogg format, which is just a type of sound file. I suggest backing up any files you edit before editing them, in case you mess up. We'll need to be able to convert .wav files ripped from your BW installation (or the ones I provided for download) to .ogg. I used wavepad sound editor for this, but you can use any program you'd like. If you want to use my copy of wavepad you can download it here, which is I believe the free version.

Once you have converted your .wav files from BW into .ogg format, just rename your converted files to the same name as the file in your SC2 mpq that you wish to replace. For example, SC2 has 5 different Protoss music files, so I took my three music files from BW and renamed them to the corresponding 5 in SC2 (I had my first and second BW file replace 4 and 5 since BW only has three Protoss songs).

Now make sure to close the mpq editor before running SC2, and if you did everything properly you'll hear your newly replaced .ogg files playing in-game!

Read this before replying! If you want to change other files in any of the SC2 mpq's, simply create a replacement file with the same filename and filetype, and replace the old file in the mpq with your new one. Here and here is some more information on this.

It's cool you can do this but um.... can't you just turn off the background music and have the brood war music playing in your music player?

I usually just listen to my playlists while laddering but honestly:

infinitely superior.

(could you replace the SC2 music with any music?)

Yeah, but that uses up more PC resources than necessary, and it's also a lot more fun to put them into SC2 yourself.

This seems pretty risky, just play it in the background IMO.

I remember in the beta someone made it so all the sounds that could be used from sc1 could be put in sc2, was so awesome playing with those .

Yeah Zelniq wrote that thread. I linked to it at the bottom of my OP.

Thanks for the guide. I think I'm just going to have it playing on a media player in the background though.

But man, BW music is nostalgic as hell. SC2 music is fine but there's almost nothing that beats classic BW music.

Yes, scbw music back. I do like the starcraft 2 music, but BW and original music just gives a better vibe overall. It gives the feeling that there is more action going on, and gives better race impressions through sound.

The music in starcraft 2 just feels like watered down versions of the original game. Thanks for the tip (altho I was playing it on the background already lmao)

I actually stayed up too late last night just to listen to my switched music while playing. I'm still surprised at how happy that change has made me

And yes you can replace any file with any file as long as the filename and filtype is the same. However you want things like images to have the same resolution.

Zerg SC2 music is so, so bad. I'll consider doing this but I think it is safer just playing it in the background like people have said.

With all these hugely popular mods floating around, it certainly would seem to make sense if Blizzard included all these options so people who were interested could modify their client environments more easily.

Building it into the official client also removes the risk that people are editing files as gameplay-affecting hacks.

I want the old sounds from Broodwar aswell and not only the music. I wish Blizzard put that choice into the game so u can switch between Broodwar music and sounds and Sc2 music and sounds.

Check the links at the bottom of the OP for info and resources on doing that to a lot of units/sounds

100% agreed.

Probably the only thing I prefer in SC1 over SC2.

The Terran music is sooo good.

That's how I'm playing
I completely finished putting zelniq's sfx into my mpq, and now I'm doing MOAR!

It's against the ToS but who cares? Nobody's been banned yet for decorative/no-ingame-advantage MPQ editing. Even MC has a custom background if I recall correctly.

I think SC1 Zerg, Terran and Protoss music is just incredible.
The Protoss SC2 music is real good as well, not a big fan of Terran or Zerg's though.

Haha cool, but yeah I just use my media player for that.

@Qeet

Heheh are you saying the longer we hear the music, the better we'll think of it because of memories and nostalgia? Or are you saying that as a parody of what people say when they argue that SC2's pro scene is still very young and undeveloped compared to BW, but will probably surpass where BW is today after it also gets 10+ years of life? (If so, I disagree with the parody).

Anyways, WoL is the Terran's game. I hope in the next two they'll come up with better Zerg and Protoss music. The Z and P music in SC1 are way way way superior to Z and P in SC2. I mean seriously, P and Z each only have 1 track that are remotely "music" (you probably know which ones I'm talking about, for Z it's the low pulsing bass with the screeching guitars, a little similar to SC1 Zerg themes but not nearly as good, and Protoss Theme 1). The others are just ambient sounds and noises... I hope SC2 will come up with great tracks. Terran music in SC1 is also very great, and because of its nostalgia I may prefer it over SC2 Terran music, but you have to admit they did a great job with SC2 Terran music!

This is cool but what would be better is if someone replaced SC2 unit sounds with BW ones ( ex. SC2 overlord < BW overlord )

Can you give a tutorial for BW sounds? I love the sounds the units make in BW more than in SC2 (especially for Zerg units).

lol...? Playing music in the background putting stress on your computer's resources?

If you're playing sc2 on that rig, it should be able to run a standard music player in the background. I don't think there's a computer that can so "barely run sc2" to the point that it can't run a music player in the background.

I do a lot of multitasking, and had to remove 2GB of defective RAM the other day. So I can't really afford to have a music player open or it cuts into other things, believe it or not.

Plus it's really inconvenient to have to open a music player/start/stop music to play during games. It's both fun and more convenient to have it play when you play.

This thread reminded me of the question:
Why doesn't the game have a "use BW sounds/music" by option default?

Personally I prefer the BW unit/combat sounds by FAR and changing the music to the good old themes would be very nice.

Or at least an option to change the whiny individual unit complaints to a universal "our forces are under attack!" voice rather than "we cannot hold!"...

Anyway

? Elaborate plz

http://www.mediafire.com/?1dooo7mpi9ork4q
Download this MPQ-file and put here

... \ StarCraft II \ Mods \ LibertyMulti.SC2Mod \ ...here...

So after puting this file 2 zerg themes, that are very ambient'ish (more like noise, than music), will be replaced with 2 zerg themes from SC1:BW.

Also, after deleting this file, your music will be again fully from SC2.

Term "replacing" is little wrong, because really there are nothing replaced. Only created another MPQ-file with same file structure, that overrites original files.

What's the name of the Broodwar MPQ in which you extracted the music from? I only have BrooDat.mpq and StarDat.mpq and patch_rt.mpq. In the mpqs, I only see a long list of poorly named files and no folders inside. (I'm looking for the unit sounds; I assume they'd be near the music, as they are in the SC2 mpq)

I converted zerg themes from SC1 OST to ogg and put them in sc2-mpq archive, that I've created already

There is one problem with the OP, applying this change WILL give you an in game advantage, the SC:BW music is just that awesome. Hopefully blizzard doesn't notice the extra wins people get when they switch the music over.

everything BW have >>>> SC2..... ball pathing..(dinamich pathing) <<<< bw pathing...(micro macro control)

sc2 (almoust dont have MICRO) stim pack hit run isnt micro... FF inst micro....banglings (modern lurkers ) isnt micro... colloss a move isnt micro....

that is one of things that suck in sc2 two and that is music of some races... i think zerg are ok and terran music... but i agree with LOL toss music...

also voices of races like all zegr unites (sucks) terran are ok... and toss to me personaly stalkers are so boring (like zeratul in campain old man voice..compere to zeratol in sc1 is yust LOL)

senturies (joke..) zealots (great) probes (OK) stalkers (worst) imortall (Epic) ...and on and on...void rays (great) ...stakers are the moust problematic...boring as hell..

Hey i'm trying to change my zerg music into broodwar music. The file i downloaded comes with 3 zerg .wav files and i changed them to ogg. But in the mpq editor, there are 9 zerg sounds. Exactly which ones should i replace with the 3 zerg files?

you should put a guide on terren and zerg sounds
