A phobia is a persistent, irrational fear. Ladderphobia actually is a fitting term.

Also, it's not the same. On ladder you're playing to win and keep a score. You rarely talk with your opponent, unless it's to BM or GG. Your opponent is a stranger and he's there to win, not to befriend you. When I play allied with my brother and friend, it's all about not getting overrun by the computer and when we're playing each other, winning or losing doesn't really make a difference. In fact, I'll try to do crazy shit if I'm too ahead just to even things up or have a few laughs and if one of us is easily beating the other to soon, he'll back out to give him a comeback chance. Ladder is not for the casual player and even bronze will have people who've been playing the game longer or more frequently than you and willing to cheese you for the quick win. It's not really about having fun.

For the average player that will never be in tournaments the ladder is the only way we have of measuring our progress as we get better. I deal with ladder anxiety a lot, but I was angry when Blizzard removed losses from my profile because now I can't accurately see how I am faring. Allowing people to turn this off is just more babying by Blizzard, if you want to play a competitive game, you should have to have some way of seeing where you rank, you can't make this optional. well, actually that made me feel much more easier to start laddering, so I agree partly with you. I wish there is a detailed stats page showing your win/loss rate that is viewed on the blizzard site alone, including: race vs race length of game (kinds of telling you whether it was due to cheese/DC'd) date played (sometimes you just would have a bad day) map analysis Honestly, a dreadful losing steak (Just had one yesterday) would dampen that awful feeling . Plus, even if you are on a mega winning steak, you can't always say you are improving. For example, I always FE as zerg and I often getting wins if I get into the late game. Or I would lose some games if the opponent went for 2 rax aggression followed by tank contain. And even if I managed to successfully fend off some aggressions like those, it could be just the opponent didn't execute/micro it well enough. as a note, if a person trash talk or no "glhf", then he is probably doing some cheese. Talking a little bit also helps the "fun" part of the game, sadly not a lot of people are doing that. I have only managed to make one fd on ladder.

Basically, I'd suggest people who don't like to ladder find some people who they actually get along with to practice and play with. Games are for spending time with friends as much as they are for developing skill.

Progress cured by fear. Now I ask for help from other players because I know I understand the basics of the game well enough to compete with people my level and to get better I must refine what I already know. But I do not fear the ladder. Nor do the wind, the sun or the rain (We can be like they are) Come on baby Don't fear the ladder. Baby take my hand Don't fear the ladder. We'll be able to fly Don't fear the ladder Baby I'm your man. [Ladder solo guitar music]

I've never really understood this. I also used to get nervous when I first started laddering, but never to the point of fear. And it certainly doesn't happen now. I think everyone will get over this eventually. Just force yourself to hit that search button a bunch of times and you'll get over it soon enough.

There are replay analyzers available that will look at all the replays and give you detailed stats about how you fare against each race, different maps etc. etc. etc. Tons of stats to be had.

Basically they have Ranked matches and Public matches. Obviously ranked matches will count towards your rising rank, while Public matches would still PIT you against people of your skill level, without having a direct effect on your rank. If there was an easier way to present this to the masses, it might help solve some of those problems. The "fear" of hitting Find Match may be reduced if it didn't actually count towards anything. IIRC Player Matches don't intelligently match you against other people, you just pick from a lobby at random. If you want the best competition that a system like Microsoft's TrueSkill (used for Ranked Matches) or Blizzard's SC2 can offer, your best bet is the ladder.

![]() Or you can join chat channels and ask if someone with a specific race and league wish to practice with you. That will be more friendly and with less stress in it.

You need something to practice, and the ladder right now cannot give you that. Having a practice partner is such a boring task most of the time, and the match making system fit that purpose perfectly So in WC3, you first made an account where the stats don't matter, you train, then you go on your very account and lvl up with the best % possible. In SC2 you can't.

And I'm pretty sure that pic above was only ment about game difficulty in single player :oh It refers to game developers as a whole dumbing down games and making them easier and easier over the years to appeal to the masses. It's annoying.

You should feel insignificant being ranked 15,000, and lose, thats nothing compaed to being rank 4 in ur division, and losing say, 3 places if you lost.

Therefore players could use this ladder to get matched up against ppl similar to their skill level but there are never any stat record. e: this would help ppl who want to practice other races as well.

My answer is no… I think it may be hurting the people who fear it… but SC2 isn’t hurt by it at all. I think the people who fear laddering still enjoy the game.. they just play custom games or games vs. AI. At the end of the day they’ve already bought the game and spent their money so I don’t see how it could ever possible hurt SC2. Unless you’re trying to argue that it’s hurting the ‘development’ of esports or high level amateurs/ professionals.. which I think is extremely unlikely. People with the fear of losing are not typically the ones who reach the peak of what they do anyways… those people know that practice and losing are part of getting better. So I don’t think ladderphobia is hurting SC2 at all IMO

So its more that playing starcraft is mentally draining than scary, atleast for me, and I imagine that probably has a big impact on player numbers, probably more than anxiety.

In SC2 you can't. Unfortunately, WC3's ladder is practically unplayable for precisely this reason. The smurf accounts pretty much just took over. Level is no longer an indicator of actual skill, which makes it incredibly difficult to actually play against anyone in a fair match-up. The difference in skill is sometimes about as wide as the Grand Canyon.
