All day today I played 3v3 random with no fear, watching a stream or video on my other monitor. I have absolutely no problem jumping into team games, with mates or as a random, and not care what happens. But I generally find it hard to 1v1, it sounds stupid and I guess it comes down to maybe how you where brought up? I don't want to lose a 1v1 at all. So as day9 has said in his daily along time ago, to get past the fear you just have to play through it...but for some its harder than others. If anyone does have any tips other than "play more". Generally something that could set my mind straight...certain music...a way of thinking. Anything would be much appreciated!

If you lose a bit, you get matched with lower level players If you win a bit, you get matched with higher level players You're actually in the system you're asking for. Maybe what you're asking for is a button to choose when you can play against "lower level" players--but you can already do that by just losing a bunch of games for a day or two.

The best is to play 1v1 with your friends at least once during your sessions. Nothing serious, just experiment. It's not stressful to 1v1 with friends (especially on skype/vent where you get little rewards for small victories such as the vocal reaction they have when you kill their drop or when you scout their dark shrine) After playing these for a while you'll realize that you're actually a lot better at 1v1 than you probably think you are (subconsciously speaking) A big part of nerves is self confidence. 1v1 with friends helps with that so long as you guys push each other to be better.

Lots of people would be discouraged to play if every game was either a crushing victory or crushing defeat

Things you should fear in life: cancer, disabling accident, water shortage, war, unemployment,... Things you should not fear in life: losing games in starcraft 2. Nobody gives a crap about you so if you win nobody will hear your name and if you lose nobody makes fun of you either so winning and losing in this game is pretty insignificant for like 99% of people. If your ego is so easily shattered by losing starcraft 2 games, you seriously need to develop some outside interest that will build your confidence.

Lose more and you become a better player. I don't see why anyone would be afraid of improving. Things you should fear in life: cancer, disabling accident, water shortage, war, unemployment I think you could also put in losing your life savings in online poker, having your head chopped off by a guillotine and surviving from the next 15 seconds, being hung and left to squirm when your neck doesn't break, being infested when it turns out the Zerg are real, being raped, being kidnapped while on a Brazilian vacation, etc.

TL doesn't help in the least.... neither do the constant streams lol. I always end up just browsing forums or watching streams instead of laddering. Once I start I don't stop though.

Perhaps they should add speech to all the achievements, and make the achievement notice only appear once but the speech will always be on(optional of course). Medivac voice: "Hot Pickup!" Haha, I don't think I'd like that very much... You just have to realize that everything below tourni level play is a learning experience... its just very difficult to view ladder that way. I'm sure when we were all starting out we could spam a dozen games vs AI no big deal... But knowing that its a person and not an AI and that "ladder points" are at stake, somehow makes it very difficult to view as practice/learning

I am extremely competitive gamer, and I take my ranking/division seriously. I rarely play 1v1 now for the reason that its competitive and puts too much pressure for me to win and move up hence I usually play 2s/3s/4s same for league of legends. I have played over 300 normal games but only 50 rank games. Its not that I am bad, but for things competitive I have trouble starting it and go at it without feeling the pressure. Sc2 definitely needs a non-rank mode like league of legends where people can go at it without fear of being ranked. Normal and rank bigger difference in LoL is that the rating for normal is hidden, and sc2 can definitely use a system like that

Right next to the Find Quick Match Button should be a Find Quick match button that is NOT ranked. Ranked games can quickly turn off or on the competitive nature of gamers. Giving the user interface a way for casual gamers to find games that dont' deduct or make them feel worse after a game is important. There are alot of reasons why this is important. None of which applies to competitive gamers. They understand that losing = learning. However, to casual gamers having no cop out mechanism to find a fun game with similar fun minded people that dont' flip out after losing is a good thing. I think this would give ladder players a chance to practice is a better atmosphere too. As much as I love day9, he has been on this whole "Blow your ladder points, it doesn't matter, you are learning for the games you'll play later that *really* matter" But that just doesn't apply to me. I'm never going to play a game more important than a ladder game. But I still want to practice and improve within my time and skill limitations and then go test those acquired skills in games that "matter." When you only have one effective place to practice AND to play games that matter - the lines blur in a way that often times leads to an experience that is just plain frustrating. I don't have friends my skill level, and the random custom games are a total crap shoot.

I tend to get very nervous when laddering too, to the point where my hands and feet are cold, my heart rate picks up, etc. For those of you looking for advice, I wish I could do better than to say that you just have to play through it. For me personally, the worst part is waiting for those 10 seconds to click down. Once the game starts, I am too focused on the game to notice. If you feel nervous about laddering, just know that you are not alone and that it can be overcome. EDIT: On August 31 2011 10:19 positron. wrote: Want some tips for ladder fear? The fear of laddering has little if nothing to do with what other people think, and in fact it has little to do with Starcraft 2 itself. Trying to rationally (and condescendingly, in many cases in this thread) talk people out of this fear is naive at best.
