If someone was actively hurting your business for no reason other than attention you'd be pissed too.

Slasher is doing what reporters in any professional sport do. There's a reason why the last few days basketball fans have heard "The Kings are going to Seattle, no wait, they're staying in Sac, no they're actually going to Seattle, well I guess there's a bidding war..."
This is how media works. It's why in baseball we hear about "anonymous sources saying X-Player is unhappy". It's why we hear rumors that "X-Company is coming out with a new product". Smart companies/teams have learned to plug leaks, feed information properly, or deny access to the media. The smartest companies give out information (allow reporters to break the stories) in exchange for later favors (like the way most of the DC press hasn't really bothered to look into how hurt their star quarterback is).
Alex and other team owners can whine all they want, but even if they eliminate Slasher this is the nature of the beast that is sports media - someone else is going to come along working for an unaffiliated company and leak news.
e-sports is not sports, as has been pointed out. It works differently. Slasher or others may do this, but by doing so are hurting the scene and themselves in the process. So if they want to do it we can't stop them, but we can try to make them not want to do it by making them understand it does nobody any good.
Slasher has to report leaks when he hears about them, if he holds onto them he risks losing an exclusive.
From ITG it sounds like Slasher was caught off guard at the hostility and couldn't come up with a strong argument, but not everyone think well on their feet.
Alex sounds out of touch with how information leaks and whose responsibility it is to control information. It is not Slasher's fault he got the information and reported it first, which is in the best interest of his employer. Alex may think having some hyped up trade, splash page and video helps esports, but it really doesn't. Most people read the headline, then go elsewhere. Only a small percentage of people will go through all this content to find as much about the news as possible. To be honest Alex doesn't sound like he has an idea as how modern journalism works. Everything matters about being first, and the only thing to trade for keeping things quiet is access and further exclusives. EG needs to learn to work the media for it's benefit like most modern companies do. Heck Intel and nvidia send out chips long before release and is able to contain benchmarks results before launch day by doing exactly that. At the end of the day you can't keep everything secret, someone will leak it.
Overall, I think Alex's little rant in public was embarrassing for EG. I am sure he feels good about it now, but in the morning he will regret it.

no reason other than attention? seriously? lol.
Is that even disputable? I like Slasher. But that's what he's doing when he leaks these things on twitter. It doesn;t serve any purpose other than to say "hey look at me I know things before they are official" and bring views to Gamespot which they would get anyway if he cooperated with the teams

No one is saying Slasher doesn't have every right to do it, it's that he shouldn't for the sake of everyone including himself ultimately. And as to Alex and information, see his twitter:
re: "if you don't want your news leaked, control your information better" - there are people outside of your company who'll find out.
for example: you sign a free agent with multiple teams bidding on him. or you sign a new player away from a different team. the others know.
it's not possible to "control the information" or prevent a leak with player transactions, because they by definition involve third-parties.

They do whatever is in their best interest. They don't bite the hand that feeds them. If they want to be successful, anyway.
And yes, when it comes to the major news media and reporting on the government, banks, etc., this is a downfall because the investigative side tends to be brushed aside since it results in loss of access. That is a problem when trying to keep the government in check. It is not a problem when we're talking about an e-sports organization announcing a player signing.

As many of my journalism professors have said, "if you're not getting sued, you're not a good journalist"

It's his job to get attention. It's also his job to report on the SC2 scene, and therefore the better the SC2 scene does, the better his job is.

So do you think that e-sports journalists should leak as much info as they possibly can, even if it results in the downfall of e-sports, thus eliminating their job? Is that a legitimate goal? Not saying that's happening or will happen, but that is the logical conclusion of this way of thinking.

I gained a lot of respect for Alex tonight actually. Never really knew or heard much from this guy. Not to throw the word passionate around one more time, but the way he presented himself really showed how much he cares about EG's well being. (who can say if it was super profession, and by no means is it the only way to show passion).

It can be a mutually beneficial relationship. EG can give slasher inside scoops on other stories, and exclusive interviews and whatnot on their own dealings. It doesn't have to be Slasher vs EG in who gets to report the story first. It's good business, not Slasher being some lapdog of EG.
