The posts immediately following mine are part of why gaming is such a sausage fest. Most women don't want to be around it, let alone get into it, because they've got to deal with the memetic internet sexism that anonymity tends to bring out in young men. I don't want to stoke the flames too much, but FWIW I think Kelly has contributed a fair amount more to the community than most of the people posting and is a valid choice among the b-team SC2 casters of the world. It has nothing to do with Australians, except for the fact we get loads of Singaporean students in Australia and I guess to some extent we're acclimatised to their accent. Ahh. Fair play then. I've heard Singaporean English a fair bit and, having studied phonology in university, I thought I was picking up on a few cues of Aussie English mixed into her more dominant asian accent.

I highly doubt that's the reason women aren't into gaming. Maybe they just, *gasp*, don't like gaming, because they don't find it entertaining or interesting.

I'm suggesting that there are women who would be into gaming, except that in order to participate in the community, they've got to enter a community that still thinks "make me a sandwich" jokes are funny.

To put this harshly, you are simply white knighting and putting pussy on a pedestal. You showed your bias with no shame by stating "I want to see more women in e-sports." So no doubt your opinion on the co-caster for Code A is rife with this bias and cannot be taken seriously as you're not willing to put gender aside to size up the person for their skills, not for their genitals.

I've heard Singaporean English a fair bit and, having studied phonology in university, I thought I was picking up on a few cues of Aussie English mixed into her more dominant asian accent. The reason why she shouldn't be picked is that she doesn't have a superb voice for the second best tournament currently in the world, and just happen to lack *gasp* GAME KNOWLEDGE! And don't bring up Tasteless, he is playing dumb to set up Artosis. But he still give quality analysis when needed, which I doubt Kelly could bring to the table. Yes, we as starcraft community should embrace the notion of more female participant, but GSL isn't a place to give out affirmative actions.

Maybe they should brush up on their own English because there's nothing wrong with Kelly's English besides her Singaporean pronunciation. Please translate this. I honestly don't understand a word of it in the beginning, and even though I catch words here and there during the match, I have no clue what she's actually trying to say. This is a huge problem to overcome for her, but I hope that she can make it work. Edit: how do you make embedded videos on TL?

If we weren't speaking about a woman, the phrase "white knighting" wouldn't even come to mind. The sexism here is endemic to part of your argument, though decidedly not all of it. I want the best caster who is both willing and able to be in Korea for Code A. I consider helping get more women into e-sports a side benefit and something we should work for as long as the caliber of the tournament stays good. In this particular case, I think there aren't many people up for the commitment and that kellymilkies is a reasonable choice who also, as a side benefit, might help get more women into the game. I shouldn't be, but I'm surprised at the vitriol here.

SC2 does need more women but let them cheer from the sidelines, casting is a lot about the voice, and Kelly does not have the voice for this, and I'd be hard pressed to find any girl that does. Shit ever watch the Korean stream? The girl there is annoying as Hell but adds hype value with her battle cries. OHHHHHHHHHH.

I realize the current trend is to bash Americans but it's not just Americans who have a hard time understanding her. People from Europe have stated as much, even Singaporeans seem to have difficulty.

Which american accent as there are about 15 different ones? On topic i really hope she is not casting code a as i have seen her cast dota before and there is the same problem that i have with a hmong friend of mine, once she is excited i have absolutely no idea what she is saying.

That should clarify my opinion that she should be subject to scrutiny. In your case, Iko, I think you're making a (mostly) reasonable argument. I'm only on about the sexism stuff because of statements like the following: On February 18 2011 04:30 CurLy[] wrote: There is a reason women don't cast sports. Let's be honest guys, theres nothing worse than a ranting woman with an obnoxious voice who doesn't know what they are talking about. This happens often and men will stick with women like that for one reason: vagina. And some people were talking about her Chinese etc so maybe GOM is settings up a stream for Chinese players , which would be a good move considering the Chinese player base. It'll be announced tomorrow anyway , this guessing game and overreaction helps no one really... I really hope this is the case as her english casting in tense moments is just uncomprehensible even to asian americans.

As a bilingual canadian, who deals with really funny english accents all the time, I tend to disagree. It has little to do with brushing up on your own language, when it comes to understanding accents. It has more to do with dealing with that accent more and more. I'm sure if gom keeps using her for a while (more than one season), most people will get used to it. But they're paying for a service, and they have a right to complain if they find it lacking, or unsuitable (or if the commentator is impossible for them to understand).
