LOL! I have this happen to me pretty much every other game. However, I usually ended up thinking that it was my fault because I was not doing something right. I never really understood why it kept happening except that it somehow had to be my fault.

However, now that I know it is not my fault, I have to say that it is pretty annoying. I am sure this has to a bug of some sort since you can hotkey Zerg larvae and you should be able to hotkey warping in units similarly.

Umm.. It is your fault, not a bug.

You have warp-gates selected so if you don't let go of shift after warping in, it will add your gateways as well.

People actually don't realize that this simple problem will make them a better player. Here is why. Every time you make a mistake and put the buildings and units at the same hotkey here is a chance to practice:
1.calm reaction in real time
2.shift + ctrl + leftClick on gateways
3.ctrl + hotkey where you want your army, now without the gateways

When you do this 20 times in game, you will start doing it without even thinking about it.
This small routines where you react to your mistakes makes you really flexible and reduce your panic when you actually do some mistakes.
Reality hits you hard bro.

Yup, sorry, absolutely my bad. It has happened to me a lot of times that I assume it was a bug (and not my fault) when this discussion came up.

Part of mechanical play. Just takes getting used to. I don't think it needs to get "fixed" like alot of people here seem to think, since nothing is actually broken. It's just a part of the game that everyone needs to get used to.

That being said, I've done it before, but it doesn't take too long to remedy since when you tell your army and your gates to move, your gates can't actually move, so just re-hotkey.

Eh, it's a little more frustrating than you make it seem because you can't just re-hotkey your units when the units warped in are far away from your other units.

It just comes down to timing and not trying to rush everything. APM is good and all but sometimes you need to slow down for something like this until you can do it fast naturally.

I have this same issue with zerg when I add units that just rallied to my natural when I have units at their base. This is my solution. Lets say that my army is hotkeyed on group 1. I attack move. I am macroing and creating new units that I want to join me in the battle field. What I will do, instead of add the new units coming in to hotkey 1, I add them to hotkey number 2. This way I still have control of them, however they are separate from my original army so I don't have this issue of the screen not returning to the battle. Once the reinforcements arrive, I will then press 2 to recall that group, then press Shift +1 to add them to my original army. This of course is 2x the work because you have to hotkey twice, but it prevents the annoying screen jumping back to the middle of the map or to the wrong set of units, therefore it saves me time and trouble. I hope this helped!

I don't understand what the problem is. Why are you shift-clicking with your gateways selected? If you don't hold shift and just select everything, it's fine. If your armies are separate, just select your army and hold shift to add your new units. This takes like 2-3 actions and is common sense.

my platinum now diamond friend had this happen to him a TON when he was playing a lot...

basically it's because you're still holding shift when you add them tot he control group...

so all you need to do is let go of shift, and THEN make the box... problem solved.

i play zerg at around 2k diamond atm, and when i play toss in 3v3 and 4v4 i never have this happen

Players shift + z then click click click rather than z+click, z+click, z+click. That's why they are shift clicking with warpgates selected.

And as others have noted. It's simply a matter of remembering to be more careful about releasing shift before you add the newly warped in units to a control group. This mistake tends to happen when the adrenaline is pumping.

the problem is that i'm used to shift click units and shift clicking them into the control group, the problem is that if you shift click you get the units together with the warp gates.

though i barely ever play protoss so :p

I have a similar problem: I play on a laptop, so it's very easy to mash multiple keys. I have my army in 1-2-3, so all throughout the game I am accidentally hitting "w" while regrouping my units. I find warpgates in my control groups all the time.

This is just a mechanical error that the player needs to fix - and learn to deal with -over time. Hell, in bw you needed 6 or 7 hotkeys just for your army.
