I think this will make mechanic even more important. In the past you need a good game sense to know your timing and everything.
But with this feature, someone would just memorize all the time in their head. Like 6 mins attack , 4 mins defense etc...
Not the feature I hope for, but im fine with it

I think it's great. Doesn't really matter at the high levels but it helps the new rookie players (the big bottom chunk of the SC pyramid) to sort of realize how important time is.

I don't like it.

Being able to know exact timings through practice and game-sense is something that's awesome to see in a pro-gamer. You don't need any game-sense to check a clock. I don't mind it for training purposes, and Blizzard will clearly allow it on ladder, but I really hope that major tournaments do not allow it.

Until armies start clashing, its really no different than our supply box up in the top right...

I have mixed feelings about it. One one hand, it gives us one more tool to help deal with harassment, pushes, etc. On the other, it kinda takes away from that sense of "feel" that only comes with experience...

Raise your hand if you do not own a device that tells time that you could look at while your playing SC2.

This is good for all in strategies, and bad for the game.It would be cool if it was an option to turn it on in custom games for practice etc, but having a good game sense and timings in your head is less rewarding in the lower levels at least

I think it is a little to early to tell but in my opinion I would rather do without it. Adding stuff like this essentially waters down the game.

I think given that the server is just a couple hours from coming back up, we should wait and see the thing before having an in-depth discussion about it.

I'm not going to get into whether or not it's a good or bad thing (because honestly I don't care much), but what's there to wait and see about? It's a clock. It shows how long the game has been going on. I'm pretty sure we've all seen clocks before, and have a good grasp on how they work. I would argue most people on TL are informed enough about clocks to have a discussion on how one would (or wouldn't) effect the game.

heh?

Now I wonder if BOs will be listed as following:

0:00 probe
0:17 probe
0:34 probe
0:56 pylon
1:10 probe
1:27 probe & chrono boost nexus
1:44 probe
2:03 probe
2:20 gateway
etc...

instead of the good old

9/10 pylon
14/19 gateway

ps: timings were made up.

I think this is good for the game, as it gives some sense of when things happen for all players. In Warcraft 3, you effectively had an in-game clock with the day/night system, ie knowing how soon you could be hit by certain rushes. I think it serves more as a defender's advantage when they know what they're doing--something that is needed for the all-in style in many lower league matches. It especially helps a defensive Zerg player know their timings based on numbers rather than gut instinct, and thus how much they can drone up with their "safe" time.

Personally, I think it's a good idea. It can be a valuable tool when practicing new build orders on the ladder.

Top players will still be the top players. An in-game clock doesn't change the need to scout, expand, micro, macro, and execute your strategy with precision. These are all things that come from practice. Adding a clock doesn't make you inherently better at those things, increase your APM, make you Korean, and change you name to Gosu.

but the idea is not to play watching the clock, its just a reference, you dont need to lose the game sense. tis good to have game sense plus the time like (in minute 15 i need to have 2 expos or ill die, or something like in minute 16 my minerals will end in my main)

I may be a bronze player, but I'd like to ask a question.

Why is an in-game feature with the potential to allow players to better refine their timing a bad thing?

Exactly. What will likely happen is people will use the clock as a reference while they are learning, but as they become practiced they won't even attend to it because those timings are just a part of how they play. Once you're build/gameplay is smoothed out, you'll stop looking at the clock because it wont tell you anything new.

are you sure it wouldn't just distract you from actual playing?

Couldn't this clock be used by the top tier players to know their timings even more precisely? I mean sure you know that if you do this build, your opponent could have X at the time building Y finishes, but wouldn't it be better gameplay if you knew exactly at which second? It might promote super timing attacks where you can exploit literally seconds worth of weaknesses in your opponent.

It's not a big deal. After the first engagement timings will be thrown off and the clock is no longer a reliable indicator of what to expect. It'll help in those "at 4:32 5 roaches will be at my main". But that's about it. What happens from then on out depends on how well you defend the attack and how your opponent responds.

I'm sure as hell not going to use it, I can barely hold off a rush. As I said, I'm bronze.
