link pls.

cant believe they would ban anyone for editing hotkeys

If custom hotkeys were intended, they would be in the game. It is really simple as that. We are all forced to use these keys and many are sad that we can barely reach F8. Those who can skillfully and accurately hit F8 are better than us.

Hi,

i have the english client and a german keyboard layout. I wanted to move warpgates to "Z" so I created the Warpgates.sc2hotkeys file and it doesn't work. Please help me track down my mistake.

thank you for your consideration

I didn't see any post replying to you, but apologies to all if this has already been answered.

The problem is that blizzard translates certain keys from QWERTY to your local keyboard layout. But not all. All of the grid command keys are translated. But WarpIn is not. I ran into this problem since I use dvorak. Because the Y in the lower left of your keyboard is seen as a localized variation from QWERTY it is being translated to Z for the grid, masking your warp. Try changing the CommandButton10 line to be
CommandButton10=Z

SC2 will translate this to be Y, which for you is in the lower left where you probably want it. And it wont mask WarpIn which will actually be on Z for real.

Hope that works for you.

Shouldn't a mod flag this as unsafe since Blizzard has commentated that using this method to change hotkeys is a banable offense?

So is this legal or not?

I guess, if anything, this would fall under here:

+ Show Spoiler +
Unapproved Third Party Software

A third party program is any file or program that is not a part of the StarCraft II software, but is used to gain an advantage in the game, such as increasing your resource gathering rate or map visibility. It also includes any programs that obtain information from the game that is not normally available to the regular player or that transmit or modify any of the game files. Any external applications that are used in conjunction with StarCraft II can cause quite a few unwanted side effects. Some of the major possible results of the use of third party programs can be instability of the game to the point that a player "crashes" from the game quite often. External programs can also be used to transmit viruses, spyware, and other unwanted programs into a player's computer. Third party programs can also be used to obtain information from the player's computer, such as account, password, and personal information.

If a player is found to have used such a program, he/she may:

Be temporarily suspended from the game
Have further action taken, up to and including account closure, based on the intent of the program.

Since this doesn't transmits or sends any inquiries, nor does it make your opponent crash, or lets you gain an unfair advantage - pressing a key is pressing a key, it's just a matter of preference what key you wish to press. I guess it should be legit. An official answer link would put my mind at ease completely though.

Still haven't actually seen a real link supporting this. The German-language thread that may or may not have been on a blizzard forum and is talking about MPQ files may or may not have been banned for unknown reasons doesn't count.

It helps to give a link. I believe you are talking about this thread: http://eu.battle.net/sc2/de/forum/topic/441826448

In that thread somebody suggested editing the MPQ files which obviously violates Blizzard's terms, no surprise there.

The fact that StarCraft II looks for a folder called "Hotkeys" in your player data directory, the directory where your replays and savegames are stored, pretty much makes this an official though undocumented option.

Edit: Dustin Browder (StarCraft II Lead Designer) said in April this is allowed:

Day[9] w/ Dustin Browser informal interview:
UI/Hotkey adjustments: They are not planning on having a fully customizable UI but they will have customized hotkeys. For advanced players, they can even open a textfile and edit each individual hotkey.

Source: http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=121072

This quote didn't make much sense back when the only known method of hotkey editing required MPQ tampering, but with the .SC2Hotkeys config files, this suddenly makes a lot more sense.

This is similar to counter strike configs file and definitely should be allowed in tournaments.

Fixed Grid hotkeys for enGB client, QWERTZ layout:

http://rapidshare.com/files/423118643/Grid_German.SC2Hotkeys

(For those who don't know, the enGB client defines Command Button 0,2 and WarpIn both as Y, making playing Protoss impossible.)

Note that I created the whole keyset with all keys in the same order as they appear in the menu, so these files should be a great starting point if you want to create your own key config based on the grid keys.

Installation is pretty much the same as with replays. Create a folder under My Documents/StarCraft II/ called Hotkeys. Put the file in there. Start the game and select the new key layout from the menu.

Edit: Ok, I had to fix them a couple of times, please let me know if it works with QWERTY correctly.

Hello,

The thing is, I do not modify anything. I add another scheme through a
completely new file. When I choose the new hotkeys they aren't from the
old scheme, it's a totally new scheme option that gets added to the
list. And since (as it says in the link) Starcraft 2 supports the
Hotkeys folder, I'm guessing that this feature will be added in the
future anyway. Hopefully you've actually read the post on the link...

I wouldn't count one random Blizzard technician saying it is ok to mean it is legit. A different person could view it as cheating and ban you.

Until the president of Blizzard says that this is an intended feature, I would consider it banable. It's the same thing for the SC2 z-boards people were using to macro certain things and some people got banned and some wouldn't.

They made it so you can't change hotkeys in-game, so TBH I wouldn't consider this a safe thing to do because it feels like it is unintended. All they have to do is change warden to scan for this extra file and boom you're banned.

Then don't use it, what problems?

Is there any chances for cheating with this method? Remember, you can't add 2 or more hotkeys to ONE button. Remember, that you can't change non-interface hotkeys.

And MAIN reason, why it's legal. SC2-game reading files from this folder by default. With this screenshot we can see, that SC2-game every game start will find any files in HoTS and LotV folders (that are clear now). With this Process Manager we also can see, that SC2 reading file from unexisted folder with name "Hotkeys"

So why it's legal.

Until the president of Blizzard says that this is an intended feature, I would consider it banable. It's the same thing for the SC2 z-boards people were using to macro certain things and some people got banned and some wouldn't.

Wrote me please any advatanges, that players will have from changing... err, ADDING (there are no game resource editing, if you don't see) another hotkey schemes.

WIth your state, I can say, that "Grid" will give GIANT (!!!!) advatange for players VS players, who're using standart or classic schemes. Why? All hotkeys under left hand, you're not need to move your left hand over keyboard for some units/buildings/abilities, because all hotkeys under left hand.

And another thing that is not classified as "game file editing" or "cheating/illegal/hack programms", that are aditional buttons for mouse, that you can click with ONE finger! And there no "50 commands under one button", there only as example "Backspace" and "Select larva" ability for 2 buttons under big finger (sorry for my english). ANd game will classify it, that I've clicking "Backspace" and "X" (for Grid hotkey set).

Who knows, maybe some guys have cool keyboards, that have doubled "Backspace" button for left side? They must be banned too?

I mean, this game-keyboard.

I don't think I've ever wished my opponent good luck prior to a game. When I play, I play to win. I hope every opponent I ever have is cursed with fucking terrible luck. I hope they're stuck playing underneath a stepladder with a black cat in attendance a

My post was updated with more reasons, why Blizzards will be retarded, if they will ban players for changing INTERFACE (that are ONLY in hotkey schemes, but not ingame) hotkeys.

Man, I wanna be a CSR/TSR for blizzard

Then ask to technical support with e-mail, omg. What problem?

For completeness sake, apparently they're going to make this feature official (presumably by adding the option to change the keys from the menu) with the next patch.
