Hey everyone at TeamLiquid,
NEW: VERSION 2.1.0 IS OUT! UPGRADE NOW! PM me for more more promo codes - I have 10 to give out! Go to the page 5 for discussion of what is in 2.1.0. Please leave reviews on iTunes and let me know what you think!
NEW FEATURES: - VOD - Watch VOD in the Hub! Watch, Comment, Rate, and add your own SC2 replays! - Upgrades - Upgrades can now be added into the build orders!
I know I am new here, but I want some feedback for the latest iPhone App I have created called Assistant for Starcraft 2. It manages your build orders and replays them to you while you are playing the game. For example, you could have a set of PvP or TvP strategies stored in the app, then as you are starting a game, you hit play and it will call out the build order for you. I would like some feedback for the app to help me know what to put into future versions. I am nowhere near a pro at SC2, so the strategies are probably lacking compared to most of your skill levels.
The app does cost $1.99, but I really want feedback so if there are any pros, TeamLiquid moderators or members that want to use it just send me an E-Mail at taylor@thsoftware.net. I would love to give you a Promo Code and get some feedback. (Also, I read the post on advertising and feel this is really useful to the community, but delete the post if you feel it is inappropriate. I would like to talk to someone from TeamLiquid about what I could do to work with you on getting some feedback and possibly a review.)
There are some screenshots at the bottom of the post.
Thanks, Taylor

Nice. I'll definitely check is this out.
|
checking out right now! looks very sweet
|
Looks great for 1 base play, ill pick this up later this week.
Looking a bit more at the screenshot it seems really cool.
|
Lol, I don't know about you guys, but what is it about Apple Apps that draw such positive reception? I mean the reaction of this compared to this is quite a difference.
Not trying to troll or anything, I mean more power to you (although I think there's a rule against self promotion generally towards new members)

wouldn't that be much more useful as a normal pc-program on a second screen? But i guess you just want to get some money frome people who don't realize that this is just a simple timer app with sc2 graphics.

This is a lot more than just a timer. (My Halo 3 Timer app was a lot closer to a simple timer with specific intervals for weapon drops and resets)
v2.0.0 should be out in about a week that adds some pretty cool features. (Strategy sharing, chatting, authors, notes for items ex. "chrono boost this probe", "scout with this scv" etc...)
Do you have an iPhone? I'd be glad to give you a promo code so you can see how you like it.
|
hey tehelsper could you send me a promo code? id like to try it
|
Can we get a version of this that is Palm Pre compatible?
|
hmm cept i thought the new YABOT has the build orders implanted into it?
|
I think this is a good idea but the way the build order works (judging by your pictures) is that it says what time to make X unit, instead of going to time, you should go by supply?
|

Because everyone who plays SC2 runs two monitors. I'm also fairly certain that most "simple timer apps" don't store SC2 build orders but hey, what do I know.
I think it's an interesting concept. I don't have an iPhone anymore or I'd happily grab it to test.

Except the YABOT maps aren't part of the ladder map pool which is presumably where you'd make use of this.

port it to android phones o/
|
I would check this out if I were given the opportunity.
|
ahaha does it tell you to lift off your cc to the left corner of the map in any of the build orders?

Yes, the idea is that all of your build orders follow a logical supply. Then it uses a timer to replay your strategies to you.
--edit-- I would like to do an Android port (my phone is actually the 1st gen Droid), but I am focusing on the next version as well as a version for the iPad first.
|
Is there an audio message or do you expect people to look at the iphone/ipad/ipod instead of their screen?
This seems like a bad crutch to get hooked on. If you can't handle memorizing your initial build order then you're going to have far bigger problems later in the game. There's also a good chance that you'll screw up the timing by waiting for the app to tell you to build it instead of looking at your minerals.
ps. 2 drones at 17sec, really?
|
You should bring it to android.

Seems interesting, but isn't this the sort of thing that good mechanics and lots of practice just affords you without the use of something like this?

Yes! There is an audio message - it says the name of the building or unit.
Lol, yeah I noticed that really late. I was copying a strat from a game I played against. I guess he scouted or something and forgot to train. The post game reports only go down to the second where the app can get down to .1 seconds - so it is possible for two things to be built at the "same time"

Can this work on Android, or I want too much?

cool, I love to see SC-related iPhone apps.

I've thrown down more money for poker apps and chess apps. PM me a promo code and I'll get this. Simply having an SC-related app is reason enough for me to buy it.

Not everyone has a 1920x1280 monitor. Would you want to try to play a ladder game of SC in windowed mode on a 1280x800 monitor? Not to mention it messes up the mouse sensitivity in relativity with everything in the game.

FYI, using Blizzard art assets and charging for an app that uses them will eventually get them to pull your app.

I though about that a little after I released. Apple would have to pull ~30ish apps I think. In case, I have a version that has removed as many images as possible. If they do, I could always switch to that.
Legally, its not much different than running a SC website with ads and Blizzard seems to encourage that. As long as I don't do anything to piss off Blizzard I think I should be OK.

There's a difference between being able to use a site for free and requiring money to use it. They seem to be pretty slow when it comes to dealing with the paid apps, so it wouldn't surprise me if it takes a while for anything to happen. But it's not something Blizzard likes, just a heads up.

yo bro great app. just tried it. Nice sound and it really allows for lots of customization.
But you really should add information about the supply as well as game time (vs real time). This would make it more useful. Currently it is all done by seconds, please add supply.

A) You said "screen", not "window". B) Ever try playing in windowed mode on a small-ish monitor? Not practical. C) Windowed mode disables edge scrolling.
Additionally, not everyone has a computer that can smoothly run SC2 while other apps are running.

Can you make it for Android as well? Please!

I want to test it I would like to have a promo code as well.

I'd test it out if I got a promo code, then post/pm to let you know what I thought of it.

How unique. I would like to mess with it, but in reality I don't think I'd ever look at my phone while in a game. Super cool though!

Now all I need is the phone!

Ill gladly try it out and give you my thoughts about it if I get a promo code. It looks promising!

iPhone 4 here. I'll provide feedback if I can get promo'ed as well.

Looks great except for one feature: The price tag.
I know that you've put a lot of effort into this and I would probably use such an applicaiton, if it wasn't for the price tag.
There is no way of knowing if the app is worth anything before you shell out the cash. If you made a free app with the limitation that you could only store 5 or so build orders, then you could get people hooked on the free version, which is obviously not enough but does show the feel of the app.
EDIT: It's not that I don't want to pay for it, but there is no reason for a developer to provide a good piece of software when the customer pays up front and you have no follow up sales.

Hey if there is a terran version il check it out, il be happy to take a promo code aswell =)

I understand. Apple is really the one preventing me - Apple will not approve "upsell" versions that provide limited features of another app. The payment thing is also theirs - Google has a better system that will give you a refund within 24 hours if you do not like it.
FYI, this app works with all races - terran, protoss, and zerg.
Also, I am running out of Promo codes. Sorry if you do not get one. I will have more after the next version is released. Thanks for all the nice comments though! I really appreciate it and will continue working to make this app better.
UPCOMING FEATURES - Strategy Hub - Share your strategies online and download other user-submitted strategies - Chat - Chat with other users about tips, tricks, strategies, build orders etc... - Authors - Strategies now have authors for sharing online - Notes - Put notes under each unit/building (you can say "chrono boost this", "scout with this unit", or "forward pylon"
LATER, FROM USER FEEDBACK - Show supply count
Thanks again for all of your feedback.
|
I just purchased the app.
Looks nice so far, but I have one question: How do you turn off the sound?
|
Great to see app designers coming to TL to get feedback for projects.
A free version that was quite limited might help increase the popularity of your app, since it will be one of the few free starcraft apps (there are only like 5/20+).

the supply count is very important when it comes to build orders. this will make it easier for veterans to give you new build orders and make them. No one really knows build orders according to seconds, just supply.
So if your app can track the supply and use supply instead of seconds to make the build order, it will be much easier for the rest of us. You can ask anyone who has played this game if this is true or not.

am i the only know who noticed this?
his "race" is protoss... and at the top of each screen, it says Carrier... oh how awesome
|
YES! I was just thinkin about this earlier today and like magic it appeaars. Sooo cool.]
I have been taking pictures of BOs on my Iphone any way, it is really convenient when learning a new BO. This will be so much better!
Edit: Actually, after looking at the screenshots I am having seconds thoughts.
What I currently have is I go to threads on Teamliquid with build orders in them, I put my Iphone up to the screen, wait for it to focus, and then take a picture of the BO I am trying to learn. This is really handy, when I get in to the game I can quickly press the picture I want and have instant access to the build order.
This build order is displayed by supply, which is really all I need.
For your program to be worth it I would need it to do the following.
Display possible races: You click one
Display Common Builds: You can lift these right off of Liquipedia or the forum. You click one
The whole build gets displayed BY SUPPLY (Honestly, displaying builds by time is next to useless) on one Iphone screen. I know this is possible because even long BOs generally fit on one iphone screen when I take a picture of them.
Added bonus: Let me manually add build orders of my own if I want to.
From what I can tell your program is actually functionally worse than what I have been doing on my own with my built in iphone camera. I don't want to have to mess with my Iphone during my build and I certainly don't want it displayed by time. I also don't want to manually enter every build I might want to use, the common ones should already be entered; I am paying you, after all.
Am I missing something?

Yes, I know how important supply is for build order. However, you cannot create them based on supply in my current app. It uses a timer to "replay" the game letting you know what to build. Ideally, supply would be used when creating the build order or when playing the game, then the strategy is entered in with a valid supply.
To turn off the sound you currently have to mute the media volume on your phone.
I am now considering what features to put in a "lite" version that would let people try it before they buy. It may be a few weeks before its out.
Also, I added a poll to the first post to get feedback in a numeric format. I plan on adding another later to ask what features are most wanted.
@SpicyCrab - You are missing a little. You can add and edit your own build orders. Also, the supply will be displayed in a later version automatically. After you play a strat, you can add it into the app based on the screen at the end of the game that list the times. This makes sure its a valid build order. The reason it is based on times is so the app can be run in real time alerting you what to do. This is because the app does not know your current build order while you are playing.
One possibility would be to add an option on the Play page to simply view a BO by its supply and ignore the times, but that removes any alerting the app would do. It would just be a different way of looking at it. I can calculate the supply based on the order the units/buildings are entered. I hope that makes sense.
|
Yeah downloading other users builds sounds like the killer feature...
I was having trouble with entering custom builds. Much better to have someone else do it
Seems useful for learning a new build. Meaning this would be a great training tool...
I'll keep playing with it, thanks for the code!
|
Here are two preview screenshots from my latest version... Note that supply is now printed in the bottom right when watching the strategy. You can also get a list of the build order by clicking on the view button as shown in the other screenshot. Also, the dash separates an optional "note" which is a text field so you can add instructions like "scout" or "chrono boost"
(I realize there are two supply depots and no barracks yet in the BO - there will be better strategies in the hub)

Yes sums it up pretty good.
Especially if you have access to Web solutions via any phone a price of 1,99 is to much from my point of view. Dont get me wrong. I also buy Apps for 10 € or even 45 € but i "demand" some way to test it priorly and if im going to spend money i need to know thaat the App fullfills my needs. Another way would maybe be to lower the price to lets say 79 cent (think of the possible audience you can reach with SC2 if you make a good app), or maybe do a promo time where you give the app away for free. After some time and when the app shows off as very good, just establish a price (like 0,79).
Keep up the work and lower the price. It will pay off. Trust me.

You cant be serious. You can not use copyrighted graphics for your commercial purpouses! Even if the program is for free you can't just stole the graphics and use it in your product. I am going to contatct Apple and Blizzard support if the creator of this app dont prove the origin of his graphics.

Its true, sadly what the OP is doing is illegal IMO. Still, I think I will spend the $2 to pick this app up, it will be worth it even if no more works goes into this app. It looks great!

Isnt this bordering on cheating?
|
Oh it's definitely illegal to use those images without Blizzard's consent. The question is whether or not this app will make enough money for Blizzard to care to come after the creator for their cut OR if Blizzard thinks this app makes them look bad by possible confusing people into thinking it is a Blizzard product and they have it removed.

Let's see. App sells estimated 1000 times, 2000 dollars. Blizzard/Apple lawyer hourly wage .... nevermind. Won't get taken down.
That said, while it might be a handy app for practicing BO's that you don't know yet, you'll be better off if you just learn them by heart right away or just write them on a piece of paper. For $2.00, you can buy two lined college blocks and a 5-pack of ballpoints. That can store more BO's and timings than this app ever will, plus you could hardly argue that it's cheating.
My advice: You need to 'feel' a build order to be succesful with it (to be able to make adjustments on the fly). Hearing an audio cue and working from that is counterproductive.

Trust me.
You'll spend more on coffee today. ;-) A one dollar difference does not make much difference in terms of the number of sales.
Also, It was $.99 for the first two days, and free for the last 12 hours of day two. I could not post on TL yet because I had just made the account.
Also, blame the testing on Apple. Android has a much better "try for 24 hours and get a refund" policy.

64 GB phone = 64,000,000 KB 64,000,000 / ~10 KB per build order with notes = 6,400,000
I know the OS and everything takes up space and 64 gigs is more like 55 after conversion and formatting... but I dont know if you wanna write that many build orders down. ;-)

You can draw building placement on paper. HA!

Haha, one of my friends showed that comic to me the other day. I think it has become my favorite.

Yeah I just find it ludicrous how iPhone owners manage to whine about the cost of apps considering those ppl typically aren't poor.

Funny comic. Alas from my point of view, no one whined about the price directly. It all was more related to the not given ability to test the app for a couple of times/days.
Besides that, you wont get rich if you spent your money on every shit you see (just a globally statement). If you refrain from buying all the new fancy ring tones, you will have enough money for a new car or phone shortly!

Your post has an icon of an SCV next to it. Hello irony?

I think there's a difference; teamliquid aren't forcing us to pay to visit this website, while the author of the iPhone app is selling it, using copyrighted Blizzard graphics etc.
|
If you could make your own build order to input into this, i would be interested

looks very nice
definately gonna try it
feedback inc!

There's no difference between charging for a program and collecting ad revenue.
If Blizzard had an issue with people using their art assets in commercial products, they'd cease and desist sites like WoWhead which consist 99% of their art and intellectual property, charge for premium memberships and advertise competitors products right on their front page.
Using images from SC2 in an app that deals with SC2 is also no different from a magazine using images from SC2 in article about the game.

Feedback:
so it really looks nice already but there were some things i missed (from Zerg PoV)
For the Strategies-tab :
-Upgrades: in my opinion pretty important..things like Zergling Speed...Terran Bio Upgrades etc etc...(might be difficult to put in ALL upgrades..but u know..the important ones)
-The 3 Macro Abilities (Queen Spit, Chrono Boost and Mule) would be nice to have those too
-Additional things like put drones into gas/pull drones out of gas allthough this might be a bit hard to do..idk
-The timer should be split into minutes..not seconds only because the replay timer is shown in minutes too
that's al i could imagine now might add something later

Just bought the app. Nice work, I quite like it.
I really wish there was an easier way to enter build orders, but I guess with the way the app works that's not possible. It would be cool if you could just enter the order though and have it guess the time based on build times or something. Not sure if that could work though, specially for Zerg :/
Anyway good work. Well worth the two bucks but I hope to see some nice updates
Also you should sexify the icon. It's kinda ugly I know it sounds dumb but I think you'd get more sales with a slick icon.

BTW. There is already an Android Build Order App You cant be serious. You can not use copyrighted graphics for your commercial purpouses! Even if the program is for free you can't just stole the graphics and use it in your product. I am going to contatct Apple and Blizzard support if the creator of this app dont prove the origin of his graphics. Its like if I would take all best Metallica songs and put it into my new game.....I am not selling the music I am selling code/effort of the app.....LOL..hilarious.
Dude, seriously? It's an app that benefits the community. Is it damaging Blizz in any intentional way? Is it affecting you? Why are you taking such issue with this to the point of taking your time and "reporting it"?
Let Blizz find it on their own and determine it themselves.
I was taught from a young age that a man doesn't "tattle tale" on people unless the act somehow is really harming others.
Your Metallica analogy is not really analogous. In that case the Metallica songs are the meat of the program, in this sense the graphics are not what people are buying it is the code.

Thanks for the feedback. Like I said, a BIG update is coming but Apple is taking a long time to review it. It was being reviewed for 10 days, so I cancelled it and resubmitted a new version with even more features. It has been a few days since the resubmission, and hopefully will be out by the end of the week.
As soon as I get some feedback for this version I plan on releasing a new version with minute:seconds time, custom events, and adding features for any feedback.
Thanks.
EDIT: Also, I am a programmer/entrepreneur and am absolutely awful when it comes to graphics. So, if anyone would like to help me with an icon that'd be great. Send me an e-mail at tayor@thsoftware.net

Just wanted to say that I bought this app and I love it. I am able to watch replays of pro games and time the orders out perfectly. Then when I want to practice the build, I just load up a custom game against the AI and go to town.
While it seems like a lot of people are complaining about it "reading" the build to you, I really like that. It keeps me focused, and lets me get a feel for the build without worrying about exact supply. The timings start to feel much more natural, rather than forced.
Thanks for this app, and keep up the great work!

Version 2.0.0 is out and I'd love for everyone to upgrade and give me their feedback! Also, PM me and ask for a promo code - I have 10 more to give out!
New Features - Share Strategies Online - Download Strategies from the Hub - Chat - Supply - Logical Build Orders by Tech Tree - New View on Play Tab - Authors - Notes for each Strategy Element
Thanks, Taylor

Meh It should be free instead and I would buy it to try it but sorry im not gunna spend 2 bucks
|
Picked it up earlier and messed around. (2$ is nothing so stop complaining those of you)
So far one gripe I have is while creating a build order you can't do it off of supply. I'd really like to use this while I'm out and get an idea of something to test later. That way I can quickly record it without having to use a notepad app.
I only used it for a bit, will keep messing around though. Glad you came here for help, hopefully with everyone imput this can be the sc2 app to get.

UPDATE Hey everyone,
2.1.0 is out now and I want to give more codes away to TL members for testing! I have ten codes to give out so the first 10 people to PM me will get the app for free!
NEW FEATURES - VOD - I have added VOD to the Hub so that you can watch, comment, rate, and add your own SC2 videos. Use the app on the go to catch up on the latest SC videos! (Played through youtube) - Upgrades - I have added upgrades to the build orders. Right now, you add an Upgrade and it will prompt you for the name.
Let me know what you think and please leave reviews on iTunes!
Thanks, Taylor
