Can players at live tournaments hear casters?

For example, at the IEM final the casters were interacting with the crowd and vice-versa. This coupled with the fact that players are in the same room as the crowd would seem to suggest that the players should also be able to hear them. Am I missing something? I'm aware they wear headphones, but surely they don't block out all incoming sound? And even if they did, couldn't a player just loosen them a bit? Or am I being even stupider than I think?

This was addressed in one of the interviews, I think DjWheat's of MorroW. He said unless you turned off all the sounds and concentrated you couldn't hear the casters.

At some of the KR tournaments, I've seen that each player has a "spotter" - often a cute girl - who stands behind and watches him play. Probably watching to make sure his headphones stay on and he isn't doing anything suspicious during the game?

Those headphones were so huge because they included soundproofing. I've worn sound protective earphones like that before when doing some loud work at a job and I would expect that they do just fine keeping the players from hearing the casters.

I've also heard of tournaments that use in-airs for the sound combined with over-ear protective soundproofing headgear. You basically can't hear the casters in that situations, or loosen your headphones without being noticed.

I believe that's how we're doing it at i40.

this is the most common setup I've seen, at least watching BW.

I see, thanks. I feel like you would still hear SOMETHING if the game wasn't outputting any noise at one point, or at least you could see or hear audience reactions if something crazy or cheesy is going on.

If they face the crowd, they may be able to read from their reaction if the opponent is doing something exciting like a drop.

It'll be interesting to see how MLG does it since players are required to bring their own headsets

Booths are the best option, or having players in a separate room to ensure fair play imo.

It seems like you'd want them to be able to hear the crowd reactions to really awesome play... But at the same time that might give something away.

I guess the players probably don't care? I'd be interested to hear their opinion. Maybe they can hear the crowd reactions through the headphones faintly anyway.

the sound system at the iem was positioned so that you couldnt hear anything while actually standing onstage, you can see in some interviews that questions are not understood because of this. it wasnt an issue at all.

Yeah I was kinda wondering the same thing... they never had any reaction to the crowd so I'm guessing it really isn't much of an issue.

If a proxy rax is built in the center of the map (or wherever), the crowd will most likely go wild/start screaming or something. This will easily raise a red flag for the player as to "what the fuck are they screaming for nothing is going on-or is there".

most players also have the game sounds on fairly loud, and immense focus on the game will usually prevent them from even hearing anything.

I remember at the start of one of the games, Day9 told the crowd to cheer for Dimaga, and when they did Dimaga smiled and gestured to the crowd or something.
but maybe he just saw the crowd cheering and reacted to that

From the looks of it the big headphones do look like those ones on helicopters so it doesn't kill your ears. I'd imagine you couldn't hear anything but the in-game sound.

Has anyone seen the Boxer vs Blackman video, where the English commentator was saying Boxer is responding do well, he must be able to hear the commentators. Most biased commentator ever, anyone know who it is?

white-ra was using earphones, as in those little things you put in your ear lol.

on this topic: wouldn't online tournament players simply be able to tune in to the stream if there is one and pretty much know what exactly is going on? i'm sure many players will have integrity and play honestly but isn't it just too simple to cheat during online tourneys?

The noise canceling headphones I have are designed to remove engine noise (Bose Aviation) - you can still hear people talking when you have them on.

I suspect that it's mainly that they can't pay attention to it, though I've seen a few pictures where the contestants are it little boxes.

He was wearing headphones over them when the game started but he kept taking them off during the interim. From what Ive seen of WC3 and BW competition play that always seemed to wear that combination of ipod style within sound cancelling..

Though to the OP I do remember TLO stopped the madfrog showmatch to say he could hear the casters and he got given those sound cancelling ones.

From my experience of streaming of any kind, there is a significant enough of a delay that absurd amounts of cheating is a bit difficult to pull off.

Depending on the connection and stream provider, the delay can vary from several seconds, to a whole minute or more.

If you are using that method it is probably better to use a middle man. Somebody that watches the stream and only adds important things for you, things that actually matter with regards to the delay. Otherwise you would get overly distracted trying to listen to everything. Some casters almost scream at certain points, I would most likely lose a lot of focus listening to that compared to somebody just saying, he is proxying or he is hiding a starport in the north half of his base.

This is probably one of the reasons why LAN tournaments are higher regarded.

ive used the esl headphones, i could hear shoutcasters at the eps finals just, but thats because they locked the sound on the headphones to 40% i think it was, if it was any louder i wouldn't of been able to hear the mutter in the background.
@ totalbiscuit, iseries just hope that your headphones are good enough to not hear the shoutcasters (for when they do cast the finals if they have a proper stage set up) due to them not having any stage headphones.

I also wondered about that
especially after watching IEM finals
In game 1 idra went for roach speed before getting enough roaches
while game 2 was setting up day9 and apollo commented about that mistake and Idra didn't repeat that later... Clearly Idra is kind of player that doesn't need tips but it made me wonder if he heard them... Once again : it was between two games not in game!!!
Also I'm pretty sure MorroW wasn't even wearing headsets while game 3 or 4 was setting up

In game I don't think you can hear anything... you need to focus on game not on some whispers...

they tend to use super heavy duty headphones. you'll notice that in this picture

http://wiki.teamliquid.net/starcraft/images2/a/a8/TLOMadfrog.jpg

madfrog actually has a pair of steelseries headphones next to him but he likely isn't allowed to use them because you could easily hear the casters.

i think what with having such huge headphones blocking out almost all sound plus having them playback the game sound, they can't hear anything at all.

nor do i think they really want to. i know for some people there would be an incentive to cheat, but i feel that players of, say, tlo's caliber would rather win based on their own skill than win based off of a tip-off from the casters. that's what i would want to do, anyway.

Idra is good enough of a player to catch his own mistakes and adapt to them by the next game.

well i played a few small online tournaments that was put up by a few communities here and there and what they did was simply to stream replays after the match was finished so it was still in the tournament day, just about an hour or so later

Like others have said in the thread, they aren't using some cheapo pair of headphones. Those things are HEAVY DUTY noise cancellation headphones. The only thing I would be worried about by not playing in a booth is that sometimes the crowd can tip-off a proxy. We all know that sometimes sound is so loud that you can feel it. I'm sure that there are certain times that the players on-stage can feel the crowd cheering. If this is in mid-game or late-game it's probably not a huge deal but, early on when the game just started I'm sure most of them would have alarm bells go off.

I'm pretty sure most players cannot hear the commentators or the crowd reactions in the tournaments. It seems logical that the outside stimuli is reduced as much as possible to prevent influencing the players' decisions.
