Use some of the screen space like in Soccer to show some ads? Its not really that hard. Also I think that in W3 some maps had advertisements built in

Basically, win your group = you face one of the weakest 4 players to advance out of the open bracket... lose your group = have fun vs PuMa etc. Obviously group play isn't still as important as something like IEM style with elimination, but they clearly wanted to have an open qualifier at the same time, so having players eliminated during group play is kinda broken. They could send the 3rd/4th place from each group to the loser's bracket like in that DotA 2 tournament, but they said they don't want double elimination for the championship bracket since you can't cast every game that way.

Poker tournaments, for example, (with the exception of this years WSOP that they experimented with live coverage) were effectively 'replay casted' so it gave them the chances to gather interviews, build storylines, etc. While the people who closely followed the scene were aware of the results, the audience that was reached just by this recap-style coverage is huge. The same can be said for a variety of the sports programming, including some of the highest rated programs. If nothing else, how amazing would it be to see a sc2 game on the top 10

If you think about the amount of time that an mlg takes in order to play out, you would have to have a significant time slot. The only time that particular time slot would probably be available is during a particular low viewer count. Either that will occur, or the will have to splice and cut down quite a considerable amount and place it into a more populated time slot. The second scenario will inevitably yield an "incomplete" or neutered version of sc2 and an mlg. However, the first poses another problem entirely. That is finances. I am assuming that a timeslot on ESPN doesn't simply get given to you for free; on the contrary it is probably a significant financial investment. So you have to wonder what the ROI is on that investment, particularly if you find yourself shoved into a Sunday at 2 am slot. What viewers are you hoping to attract with that time slot? To me it reads as a calculated risk; there is tremendous upside to be had, but if it is a significant financial investment to get a bad slot on ESPN, is it worth trying to break into a crappy television slot when you could invest that money elsewhere (such as the expansion of prize pools or increased production values and the like). If the numbers work out and MLG feels the ROI on the duration of time and the particular timeslot is worth it to the point where they can offer what they feel is a complete introduction into eSPORTS, then by all means go ahead. But I have a sneaking suspicion that this is not the case right now.
