Hey guys,
I am the creator of sc2sig.com and just had another idea: custom divisions.
I don't know if blizzard will add custom divisions ingame soon, but i could build a website where you could create custom divisions.
A custom division would then consist of you and anybody you'd like to add, showing every division-member in a table sorted by league, points, rank. (In a way similar to "my friends rankings" on your ingame profile).
Do you think this does make sense? Would you use it?
No, there wouldn't be any in-custom-division matches or game integration, just a way to display any kind of group like your guild, your friends, etc.
This data could then also be used to compare custom divisions by calculating averages, i.e.:
guild x average wlr: 55% guild x average league: platin guild x average points: 300
guild y average wlr: 60% guild y average league: diamond guild y average points: 500
And, at last, to further recycle things i already built, i could add self-updating signatures for your custom division. Think of this whole thing as the group- or guildversion of sc2sig.com.
I haven't started to build this yet because i'd like to hear your feedback on this first, if anybody would actually use it.
UPDATE 20.8.2010: Ok, BETA is available at http://sc2divisions.com/
Please report any bug you find or any strange behaviour you see. As i said before, i am not satisfied with the interface yet as it doesn't seem that intuitive/easy to use for me.
The player table is sorted this way: league descending (diamond -> bronze), points descending, rank ascending.
I think it's an awesome idea, I find that people like you really help the community insomuch as you innovate before blizzard can ^^. I can see it becoming an enormous success! If you need beta testers, I'd be happy to help.
I really really like this idea, if Blizzard doesn't add clans/guilds soon. However i'd be afraid if they did hold to their word and incorporated clans to BNet 2.0 and you had just made your own custom divisions. It might just be too soon to tell.
i think this is an AWESOME idea for Teams. teams having their own inside ladder to be able to compare to each other much easier than what they are doing now. that was wat first came to my mind.
edit:
as post b4 me said, we have no clan support atm so we have zero idea what will be coming. :-/
Great idea to keep track of friends and teams, I know that some divisions are very lackluster in terms of quality and if you could just make your own with you and your buddies it could promote a little bit more compeition.
I am praying that come blizzcon 2010, blizz will announce the complete re-work of Bnet 2.0
I think this is a fantastic idea = )
This combined with chat-rooms would be amazing.
This is pretty cool. I'd definitely take part in it.
great idea. i will definitely support this.
Sounds fun but will have to consider if there are any ways to abuse this to help your score.

This is such a logical extension of the division system it's a wonder Blizzard didn't implement it, especially considering their goal of fostering a new social community. Xbox Live games allow you to filter Leaderboards by Friends Rank, so a custom division as you describe makes perfect sense.
Things may get a little confusing if you have friends that are in different leagues, but I'm sure Blizzard could come up with some way to present the information that isn't confusing. Absolutely in support of this idea.
It would also help organising tournaments.
Do you really want custom divisions? :D
Great idea.
We need a Teamliquid division to motivate me to play.
I have the feeling that some of you misunderstand what i can do and what i can not do:
I can let you build custom divisions on an external website, playerstats will get updated daily. You can watch a list with all your friends including their league, division, rank and points. This will give you a nice looking division page with some statistics for your friends or guildmates.
I can not add the custom league functionality to the game itself. You can not join that custom division ingame or play against custom league members through the game itself. Everything is and stays on the website. This will not and probably won't ever influence your ingame experience in any way.

I don't want to give you the wrong idea about my reply. I'm saying this is something Blizzard should have done from the start. The fact that we'd have to visit an external website to do something that should have been core functionality is disappointing and somewhat of an inconvenience, but that website would fill a key role for many users in my estimation.
that sounds really nice, i honestly hope you will do that! great opportunity to have a overview of teammates and friends, combining then in 1 "division"!!
also nice way to campare teams, this is nothing but great.
P L E A S E do that!!

Oh so FYI I didn't notice until someone mentioned it to me but you can view your Friends Rank (in-game only) by going to Leagues & Ladders > Friends. So it's kind of already implemented, but just not on the website.
if blizzard implemented a way to put this in the client, it would be the best thing ever.
Sounds awesome. All the zerg and toss players can finally have a league without terrans!
this is an awesome idea, we could have a teamliquid.net division for everyone on the forums.
Didn't Blizzard say custom divisions are something you can pay for down the road? I am pretty sure this was hinted at during one of those terrible interviews that sparked the Husky video and the beta boards blowing up.
Hey guys,
just wanted to let you know that i am working on this and am nearing beta stage. The biggest problem for me right now is how to let you manage your own custom divisions without yet another registration/login process. I love simplicity, and for example love that you can get your starcraft 2 signature from sc2sig.com on just one page with very few simple steps. A lot of feedback said that the majority of you likes that too
I have some options for the custom divisions i am evaluating right now: a) Yet another account, just for this site. Want to avoid this, but works 100%
b) Just a 'management password' per custom division which can be set at the creation. You would have to enter it with every change you want to make, but no real account/login required. This is the way i am implementing it right now.
c) Do you guys known OpenID? Or Facebook-Connect? Anything tl.net or other sc2 sites offer as a central authentication system i could use?
Any input is appreciated.
Ok, BETA is available at http://sc2divisions.com/

any sort of clan support would be really nice. I'm sure Blizzard is working on clan support right now, and I can't wait for them to implement it!
Wow that really sounds like a good idea, I support that
As soon as tournament services like challonge.com offer api-access, i will implement a "start a cup from this custom division"-feature. I like this idea
If you know a tournament hosting site that supports something like that (automated registrations/api-access), let me know!
Is something not working on the site? Or is something wrong with the concept/interface in general?
With the feedback i got for the pure idea I don't really understand the near-zero response to the beta page. Especially if you found something that doesn't work or you don't like, i'm dependend on your feedback!
This is an example how a custom division could look like for a small forum community: http://sc2divisions.com/custom/malganis-de/4 It doesn't matter if you are in different divisions, leagues or even servers - you can compare all members on just one page.
Can't see all people in division, Doesn't have correct 1v1 race, only "most common" race.
Other than that, pretty nice and I like it! Good Work
Not by far a new idea, but definitely one I think we'd all want.

wow really fun idea. your own private division that you can play with friends. etc. brilliant genius.
sounds really cool actually, to be able to create extra custom divisions in addition to your main division.
obviously this would just be for fun, but would really be cool to do this for a bunch of friends or a team or sumthing
Some dude with 10 minutes of free time > Battle.net dev team? I like.
I was looking for something like this! Great idea.
Also, maybe add option to make it private/public?
wow i would really like teamliquid division :D so i can see how bad i am ;]
This is really cool, I always like to argue with friends about rankings and these groups them neatly. Here's what a populated one looks like:
http://sc2divisions.com/custom/grudge-match/67
Feedback: It's a little tedious to add a bunch of people, maybe having the form reset to add another person automatically or allow multiple additions at once? Overall very cool.
i love you for doing this, seriously!! you sir, have a fan!
On August 24 2010 23:05 Inkarnate wrote: Feedback: It's a little tedious to add a bunch of people, maybe having the form reset to add another person automatically or allow multiple additions at once? Overall very cool.
The add player url input field does now reset and gets focus after a successfully added player.
I also fixed an issue where reloading the page with a selected management radio box wouldn't show the additional fields.
You can now also click on the player names to get to their b.net profiles.
Last but not least: the url you can enter below your divisions description is now also displayed correctly.
The next big things are comprehensive sorting functions (sort by any table cell in any direction) and average statistics.
Competitive gaming site clanbase.com host ladders for many games; upon announcing their SC2 ladders they were informed by Blizzard that they cannot host permanent ladders, but can host one off tournaments (Cups on Clanbase) and so will be doing this instead.
Just a heads up :-)
p.s. I like this custom ladder idea where it's like a ladder between friends or w/e, nice :-)
Hm, i don't "host a ladder", i just gather all the actual b.net information for a set of players you provide. (imho)
Holy flipping dicks, this idea is so simple yet so awesome. Our epeen comparisons will never be the same!
+ Show Spoiler +Be advised, I may sound sarcastic in my post, but this is, in fact, genuine nergasm.
Also, are only people with league wins added to the division? Because those with team games are added (even if they have no solo games), though those with no league wins whatsoever do not show up (or that's what I think I'm observing).
This is going to help so much for open tournaments.
Actually, please make an option to have no password for open tournaments. Please.
I tried making a division for a website I go to, but trolls kept removing players n stuff. Needs more admin features to prevent this.
I don't like this idea specifically, but they should really add a team feature, and show team rankings (ie, an independent ELO ladder of all the members in a particular league, usually diamond), as well as a global team ladder, showing the current strongest team based on highest and average ELO. Also this would make things a lot easier for players wishing to have clan tags in their name, just another good feature to have
didnt they say in a couple weeks from release we would have the clan patch? i was hoping this would be implemented from along time ago.
This is an awesome idea. I love it!

thats really really nice. GOOD JOB!!!
i really like this feature. it would be nice if you could somehow incorporate wins and losses and w/l percentage, preferably against each race but i'm not sure that's possible o_O also as you already said you were working on, average statistics throughout the division is a nice touch

Hm, every player should show up, even with no games played at all. If they don't, please send me a pm with the profile urls that don't work.
In this example: http://sc2divisions.com/custom/malganis-de/4 the last player has not played any 1v1 ladder games yet, so this is the way they should show up.
By the way: The site also supports cross-realm divisions, so you can add eu/us/sea/... players to the same custom division!
how often does the custom division update?
no auto updating active right now, but you can force it to update on the custom division page via the "update now" link. i will activate autoupdates soon and i think they will run on a daily basis -> every 24 hours.
Great idea Leidenschafft, very useful!
One remark: I am not sure Blizzard will be fine with you using all their graphics on your site. Or there might be an announcement that they actually do allow that for community sites that I am not aware off...
It shouldnt be to hard to replace the images by custom made ones though.

I already sent out requests to get included into their fansite program, to know exactly how they like my websites and the usage of their graphics. As you may also have noted, the Starcraft 2/Blizzard trademark/copyright remark is on the page since day one.

This is the real strength of the site IMO. Technically if you really wanted to, you could add everyone you know to your friends list and go to your profile > Leagues and Ladders > Friends Rank. You don't get the convenience of a website but it's a lot of the same information. The real benefit is being able to do this across realms, which is pretty neat. Thanks for the effort and the update!
EDIT: Another advantage this site has over the in-game Friends Rank is filtering. I can add people who I don't want on my friends list, which is handy because it doesn't clutter up my friends list or bombard me with annoying toasts. I can also create categorical divisions, say one for Co-Workers for example, that I wouldn't be able to filter using the in-game Friends Rank. Neat stuff.
I use this for my country rank statistics
Just made a division and I love it, thanks.
Just updated the site to support bulk-adding of players.

Player Value, League Value and Average Player Value:
To compare players/custom divisions vs each other I am trying to introduce a new numeric value which should resemble how "good" a player is overall in battle.net. Right now the formula reads like this: League * Ladderpoints + Achievement points + Won career games. I am trying to include every aspect (pvp + pve) from the game into this value.
By assigning each player a value i can sum up all the points and calculate an average per custom division. You can now easily compare divisions vs each other via the average player value, membercount does not matter this way.
What do you think about this?
edit: also added WLR
Thank you for this. This is really useful.
I'm not sure I agree with the player value including achievements and what not, but everything else is great.
Keep up the good work!
That is an awesome job, man !
I created Belgium Ladder. The password is BEL Feel free to add yourself if you live in Belgium !
Ok, getting a lot of feedback saying that achievement points and won career games shouldn't count for the player value. Putting more thought into this, I think achievement points already cover the PvE-part of the game in a numeric value and my player value should only include PvP values.
League * Ladderpoints, would this be enough? Any more ideas?
League * Ladderpoints * WLR would be another option, rewarding quality over quantity of games.
I like the 2nd one (league*ladder*WLR) more than the first.
Is it possible to create a 2on2 Ranking like this one?
This idea is awesome. We use it to keep track of all our country players (we are a small country afterall)
Thnx for this
This is very nice lol we should have our own TL.net division, see how you rank compared to TL
Player Value updated to league*ladderpoints*WLR
very nice work leidenschafft, another thank you from a fan/user
I made a division for a discussion server that I'm on, but despite showing the number of members as 24, it only displays the stats for the first 20. Is this intentional?
Looking into the missing players issue right now
Still wondering if you can change the symbol to 1v1 only....(For example, my 1v1 race is Zerg, but for everything else, it's Random...and since I play a bunch more XvX games (where X>1) than 1s, my symbol is random...)
Other than that, the site is amazing and great job!
Added! . Hopefully more people will join, as a division can't really be a competitive one unless there are more players.
Seeing more and more communities using sc2divisions.com for their sc2 ranking I'd like to add even more value with the ability to link back to forum profiles/accounts per player. I don't know how to include this into the interface yet, but it should help to connect differing accountnames.
Hey there, that's really a great feature/site man.
However would it be possible to display it all as one image that also keeps the same link? So that when you're at a fan site or so and have a dedicated thread for the custom league of that forum you can always have an up-to-date (daily or another frequency) ladder image?
That would improve the user friendliness a lot I think. But of course that'll be much harder to code I suppose. Perhaps limit it to smaller leagues with like max. 20 members or simply only make the image display the top 20? Something like tha would be really great.
Thanks in advance ;P
Blizzard does have his way to implement user created content into their games, see WoW and how some addons were implemented. Though it could take them a long time. But very nice feature there, thanks for all the effort you've put into it.
Issue with not always showing all players has been solved. Only occured if your division had more than one member with no 1v1 ranking, just showed the first one there.
Also added race distribution to the stats.
I created a division, but now it simply says "division not found" though I see the name. When I click on it, I have no options available. What am I doing wrong?

battle.net profile urls - can you give me some examples which don't work?

When I go to my division, my profile isn't updated. I was promoted to Diamond about 3 hours ago, but it isn't reflected on the division page. Clicking "update all" doesn't fix it.
Edit: Fixed. My profile was up to date at the time, but I just checked my custom division and it was fixed. I guess there is just a delay.

This is really a great service.
I find blizzard's idea behind the divisions some what acceptable (the deal about being #1234342 over all not making much sense). But i hate that i can not compare myself with my friends. Your custom division seems to be a perfect solution for this problem! :D

Thanks Leidenschafft.

Hello,
I'm trying to add http://eu.battle.net/sc2/en/profile/196237/1/Carpathian/ to my division but it says "Invalid profile URL"
What am I doing wrong?
EDIT: After a refresh, it looks like it did add the profile but instead of posting success it gave me that error, you might want to look into that.
This is awesome.
Unfortunately for us, the purpose of bnet2.0 is not to ease the compiling of meaningful statistics, but rather to obscure said data behind achievement points, arbitrary division separations, and division rank. The only number with any meaning is hidden from the primary profile pages and even THIS isn't one's true MMR.
The only thing more pathetic is that IT WORKS. I wish I could dismiss their tactics as absurd, but a couple of my irl friends who are awful at the game believe their 47 Silver rating means that they are 47th in North America. Way to feed the egos of the ignorant, Blizzard.

Other than that, the site is amazing and great job! Since this hasn't been fix yet...maybe a suggestion if it can't be fixed: With password, let user change the race being shown? This will get fixed soon
Just looking for a status update
Keep up the good work

WEB EMBEDDING PLEASEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
i want to embed the rank in the sidebar of my web ex: Top 1: <race icon><playername><divisionleague><realm><rank><w/l><ratio> Top 2: <race icon><playername><divisionleague><realm><rank><w/l><ratio> and so on.

Everytime I click something on the website an ad pop-up appears.. quite annoying.

I prefer this site: http://www.sc2ranks.com/custom
Couple friends have setup a custom division here since we already use sc2ranks.com
and no annoying pop-ups!

Can you integrate the Master's League into your system? By now all players in ML get the value of 0, which probably is because you didn't implement the multiplier for Master's League, I guess.
Would be great! Other than that, I love your site! Keep up the good work.
