Are there anyone else here that play with the left handed settings? And what do you think about the hotkeys for lefties?
At first I didn't know that you could change hotkeys to left-handed, so I played right-handed. In BW you could easily play left-handed with the default hotkeys, but in SC2, as they are made to be more effective for right-handed people, I just couldn't play left-handed with the right-handed settings. Then I found the left-handed hotkeys, and I was filled with joy, however, after using it a bit I noticed that Blizzard clearly haven't worked with them alot. One of the worst things is probably that both Templars Archives and Fleet Beacon both uses L as a hotkey, and when you press it you always get Templars Archives, meaning that we don't have a hotkey for Fleet Beacon. You also have to move your hands much more on the lefties setting, while on the right-handed settings it's all at the same place, making it faster to use. The lefties-settings uses the right-handed settings for unloading/loading, as an example.
Are anyone else bothered with this? Do you think Blizzard will fix it? Can I customize the keys myself?
I hope this didn't turn out to be really hard to read, but I'm very sleepy at the moment :p
|
Well I am left handed, but I just use everything right handed. makes me all cool and ambidextrous
|
I'm lefty and I just play the game normally...
|
That just doesn't work for me, unfortunately
|
Lefty here, and I used the default right handed key setup because I am used to that. At first they didn't have the left handed keys, and added them later. By that time I was happy with the right handed setup. I believe they mentioned earlier in the beta (around the time they made the different key bind setups) that for release we would be able to edit something and be able to have customized hotkeys.
Considering for this game you do not need to have something like "W A S D" within ready reach of the other hotkeys, I think you can make any of the hotkey setups work unless you find your hand position being a lefty very uncomfortable for certain setups. I tend to just slide my keyboard left/right so my hand is in a comfortable position.
|
Yeah, I'm a lefty and I just play everything like I'm right handed. I don't know, for a long time I didn't even know other lefties used the mouse/keyboard differently.
|
I'm left handed, use mouse on left side of keyboard and left-handed mouse buttons but my key-bindings are all default

Lefty here. We will eventually rule the world.

Yeah I didn't realize either until a couple years ago. I don't even know why you'd want to use the mouse with your left hand; the keyboard is where the real action's at. Wouldn't you want your main hand there?

I started doing that 5 patches ago, still nothing :/

I'm left handed, no wait I'm ambidextrous :D
Serious comment, because most left handed gamers I know, have taught themselves to use computers with their right hands.
|
By the way, I study music and play guitar right-handed. I'm thinking of switching though, because one of the professors at school have told me about several studies that show that you can never get better playing right-handed than left-handed. After he told me that I realized that I have many problems with my guitar technique that must be because I'm playing right-handed. After that I also started playing all games left-handed(I've played SC1 left-handed since 98, but all fps right-handed) and I noticed that my aim got much better and I generally played better in all games.

I agree with this, as long as specific issues are brought to their attention then something should be done about it. If you're not happy with the way they notice your comment on the forum, then send an email to support. You'll usually get a reply confirming the fact that they have passed the information onto the people that need to know.
Also @customization Most higher level tournaments and the like do not allow customization of key sets, macros, etc in order to keep players on a standardized footing.
|
All the left-handed people I know use computers "normally", with mouse on the right side and all that. It's useful because not all games have special left-hand settings and any computer you go on that you don't own (computer labs, libraries, etc) are set up that way.
|
im left handed in real life but this is a right handed world so anytime i used a computer when i was younger i adjusted to the right handed so even now i play on right handed settings. but i write left handed and do other things left handed but with computers i look like a right handed guy
|
Unfortunately, since the majority of people are righty (9/10 I think) the majority of EVERYTHING will be made for people that are righties. Sorry, but I were you, I'd get used to it and try to learn how to use my right hand more often (or maybe just in SC).

You could get a power glove ( or one of those things logitech sells).
I'm pretty sure you can customize most of the keys you need.

Left handed and using left for mouse just feels weird...
I suppose using a grid setup with the numpad would work best however if you were to go the "lefty" route
|
I'm a lefty and I LOVE how SC2 feels control wise. I would nto mess with my hotkeys to save my soul. This is great coming form a game that says "f you" to left handers like BW.
Edit: I use the standard grid setup.
|
Another lefty looking for some Blizz-love... The left handed controls are awful. One of the main problems is that they obviously haven't tested it with different keyboard setups. For example, the function of Tab is \ for lefties, which sometimes is at the right end of the keyboard and sometimes at the left. Needless to say how bad this is for people who are actually trying to become good. What's even worse is that unlike WarCraft 3 (even though a lot of people never found out about this feature), StarCraft 2 does not allow custom hotkeys. I would be hugely disappointed if they do not include it on release or try to make us pay for it as an additional extra.
Anyway, after struggling with the left handed controls for several weeks I switched to the grid controls for righties. It's a bit better this way but still not enough, I have realised that it assigning control groups is not efficient enough.
|
I really don't get how the grid setup (standard hotkeys) is not like the best thing in the world for lefties.....
I can do like EVERYTHING IN THE GAME without budging my hand.
|
I play left handed but have no concerns with the hotkeys. I use the right-handed settings and seems fine.
|

Quoted for truth. Seriously the grid setup is a godsend for lefties.... No more trying to hope from P to Z/D/T in the middle of a tight battle or tense moment or having to build DT's with my pinky...
|
lefty here. grid is very nice for me, it's like using a cash register or calculator with your left hand. as far as which you should use your dominant hand with, i'd say the keyboard is more important because more things are going to happen if you have a faster, steadier hand. i can play quake and other shooters aiming with my right hand so i don't see it as an issue for micro to use your "bad hand" for the mouse.
also, i've researched a lot of studies on left-handedness, and there are different levels for both right and left-handed people, varying from completely one-handed to completely ambidextrous. it's inferior but not inefficient for me to do things with both my hands. typically the things i've learned to do with my right hand without forcing it, i am equally good or better than if i switched hands. things like: console controllers/mouse and keyboard, instruments, cutting food. it's usually the one-handed skills like throwing and writing where one hand is clearly better than the other for me
|
I'm a full-blown lefty... except for comps. I can do a left-handed mouse, but it's awkward. Very awkward.

Yes, also changing control-group hotkeys should be done(at least changing control groups with the right ctrl-key doesn't work on my Macbook Pro, but that computer sucks anyway, so it might work on other machines). I really love the lefty-controls early game, but as soon as you come to shield upgrades and loading/unloading, it's basically the right-handed settings!
I'm glad so many of you lefties still can play right-handed, or left-handed with the right-handed settings. It's much more likely for a lefty to be ambidextrous than a righty, however, I am not. I tried both playing left-handed with the right-handed setting, and right-handed with the right-handed setting, but it just didn't work.
Some of you have said that I should post it on the bug reports forum, but as I've already said: I've done that for 5 patches now, and they never even responded to one of them. Let us just hope that they ignore because we can customize them when the game is released anyway!

I'm not sure that's correct. I'm lefty also and I always do/learn stuff the "right" way, i.e. right-handed guitar, mouse, etc. For the guitar part I can say that it's the left hand that's doing the hard work, so you're actually at advantage, compared to righties, at least that's what I was taught. Same goes for RTS games basically. I tried using left handed mouse and etc but it felt way too weird for me. =/ Neither did I ever feel like I was handicapped in any game I played seriously (Quakelive, WoW and now SC2) by going right-handed. I'm at an advantage when playing legato, at least. Still my right hand have some serious flaws when it comes to techniques. Sometimes I can't even play a triplet without it skipping, and I do ofcourse KNOW how to play it, I just can't seem to do it. I've been practicing alot of right-hand technique the last year though, and I'm getting better, but there's no doubt that I learn things slower with that hand.
I'm not precise enough with my right hand to use it as the "mouse-hand" when playing RTS. I can spend 5 seconds just trying to click on a worker, which obviously makes my playing slower.
I just really hope Blizzard will fix it :p

|
That is interesting...However i wouldnt know...I use both hands equal because i am intelligent...i thought all starcraft players were ambidexterous...you need the right hand on the mouse and your left hand hitting keys with pin point accuracy...I write only left handed, but everything else i do is right handed preferably, but i can be both left and right on everything... i think the normal set up favors people like me left hand on keyboard and right hand on mouse...pretty easy...i never thought that having your right hand on the mouse was meant for right handed...thats as stupid as saying haveing your left hand with a glove in baceball means you are left handed, I think we need to figure out exactly what HANDED really means...because a normal intellegent person should be able to do things with both hands just the same...i think people that cant do that are most likely handicaped in the brain there...there is no reason why you cant be right and left handed on everything
|
Well, I have been playing fps since I was 8, and have practiced alot right-handed, but still I got better after even just one day of playing left-handed. But this isn't really about me though, I just hoped to find some more people that have this problem, so maybe Blizzard will try to fix it :p

u can customize the keys using the MPQ editor. You open patch-enUS.SC2Archive which is in your Starcraft II Beta/Versions/Base15623(this is the latest version with changes to hotkeys)
then you navigate to Mods/Liberty.SC2Mod/enUS.SC2Data/LocalizedData
In here you will find a file called GameHotkeys.txt
Simply Drag this txt file to your desktop, and change whatever keys you want. There will be some things like Button/Hotkey/Armory=A so you would change the "A" after the "=" to whatever you want. You will also find Button/Hotkey/Armory_NRSM=M this is simply the hotkey for the armory but for a different set, such as the Left handed set. I'm not sure to which one it corresponds to as i just change the default keys, but you can experiment to see if NRSM is maybe for the left handed folks. This way you could still have people come over and easily play SC2 with the default keys by simply changing back to the right handed set. Whatever suits u
Anyways, make sure to DRAG the txt file out and not open it in the editor itself because once u save the changes to the txt file it will simply revert to default. So what you want to do is drag it out, make a back up copy(always, just in case), then make the changes you want, then save it, then drag it from your desktop back in through the MPQ editor, and Walla!

Wow, thank you very much! I will definitely do this! Is this accepted when playing ladder games?
|

Left handedness is actually pretty complicated. Right handedness seems to be far more clear cut, I mean the world is designed for right handers so it isn't surprising they are less confused than left handers.
As I type this now my mouse is on the left hand side of my keyboard, but moments ago I was using it with my right hand.
I write left handed, throw right handed, fence right handed, box right handed, bat (in cricket) left handed (mostly) and play pool mostly right handed, but swap to left for left handed shots or when it just "feels right".
I also juggle and some moves are easier left handed, some easier right handed.
But before I digress too far my point is the OP is asking a dangerous question, because it is really hard to get a good answer from left handers about these kinds of things. Studies talking about it being impossible to get as good right handed at something as you could be left handed are total bunk as something like that is more or less impossible to test scientifically anyway.
If the OP plays left handed I assume it is because he is better left handed, I am better right handed, and as such posts telling him just to learn to play right handed aren't really very helpful.
My advice would be to try the grid layout. I've always found the mouse to be the far more critical component of computing, so I don't think the specific layout of the keys is that critical as long as you can reach them all. I can type equally well one handed with both hands.
You are never going to get a perfect solution unless you remap your entire keyboard to be a mirror image, much like left handed writing is always going to be a pain in the ass unless you pull a Leonardo and write right to left. I wonder if someone has been silly enough to produce left handed keyboards.
|
Wow.. just stumbled upon this topic. I'm a lefty. I do everything left handed (writing, sports, guitar, etc), except video games. I remember the very first time I used a computer with a mouse I used the mouse in my left hand, and that felt most natural to me. Over time I had to force myself to use a mouse in my right hand though, since every computer I ever used was set up for right handed people, and some desks I just couldn't rearrange. So now I always use the mouse in my right hand.
I have always felt at a disadvantage because of this. My right hand is not as accurate as my left would have been if I had used that my whole life. So I feel like it hurts me when it comes to gaming. In FPS and RTS, the precise movements with the mouse I'm forced to do with my least precise hand. Unfortunately switching now would be like starting over, and it would take a long time to get my left hand to the precision that my right is at now. As far as using my left for the keyboard, it takes a lot less precision to hit a key, than aim a mouse pointer. And at FPS I have never been able to be good at sniping. I just don't have the same precision and reaction time with my right hand, as I would have with my left.
But, anyway, it's good to know there are other lefties out there dealing with this like I am. I am very curious to know how many of the pro gamers are left handed to any degree. Are lefties able to play at the very highest level?
If you are a pro SC player, and a lefty please post and let us know!

well I've been using it since beta came out and ladder has been good. Blizzard is supposed to implement custom keys eventually but have stated before that it probably wouldn't be implemented for release. Idk if they changed their minds about it since then though.
I'm betting that custom keys will be implemented eventually though and I'd like to practice with the key layout that I would choose.

I used my mouse left handed when I couldn't use my right hand. It wasn't that hard.

im also a left hand player.. and actualyl find the left handed hotkeys .. lacking.. the control and shift for me.. is in an unacceptable place... id prefer it to be in the back space and the \ keys that would make me alot faster does anyone know how to change hot keys in txt yet? or anyone developing a UI app for it?

I'm a lefty and I don't have any problems. I find it a lot easier to macro when I set the CC to 4 and Rax to 5 and so on than when I use my right hand. It feels natural to type 4 + s to make a scv or 4 + e for a probe. It's probably when I set my hand on the keyboard my index is resting on the s and my middle finger is on the 4. I haven't played zerg much so I wouldn't know how that works tho.
|
I'm a left handed player. I use my mouse with my left hand and keyboard with right, but I use the default hotkeys. They are all in easy reach of each other anyway; I've played games with worse default hotkey setups... *cough*ageofempires2*cough*: b l=build stable, b a=build archery range are a bit far apart.

Left handed and using everything as if I was right handed. The above post referring to a study on left handed people is fairly interesting though. I might have to give it a shot. =)

you make a fine point because, i know deep down in my core Left handedness is my domanent side, it is because i grew up Writing and drawing with the left hand...however i do just about everything with my right hand... But yes that study is obviuously bullshit, when it comes to handedness, it depends on what you grew up using, and if you allways did certain things with one hand over another...For example i ALLWAYS used the mouse in my right hand, trying to put the mouse in my left hand feels like it did when i learned how to write With my right hand...I couldnt do it as accurately as i have with my left, it even shows today that even when i write a letter with my right hand, my left handed writing looks a teir better period....
In closing it would be that what ever you learned first HANDEDNESS on a subject, may it be with a Pen, a mouse, a fricken assault rifle or w/e it will be you dominent handedness for that particular task and yes it will look better and have more accuracy. now just because someone if left handed, and they decide to put the mouse in their left hand after learning and being accusomed to it being in the right, it will allways struggle and put you in confusion, because the accuracy is not there where in your right hand it is exactly where you command it to be

1- im left handed player and im using in sc2 mice and keyboard with right-hand standard settings.
2- i try other settings in mice and keyboard for sc2 and its a waste of time =)
3- with right-hand settings i feel with a good speed in game and confortable enought , but yes in middle game like other user say im doing alot of missclicks, when i make more units in a middle of a battle, like hydralisk, when u try to fungal growth or other habilitys of infestor, or when i try to build something like spire or ohter diferent build, and you lose a lot of time with that misscliciks, and this cant be!
4- Hell.. , i know there is a programs to change hotkeys but if u play lan u cant do this , and also u cant change shift control keys , and i want to test the change.
5- More coments? help welcome , wtf!!!! ;DDDD

Keyboard and typing techniques show that you can both type quickly and accurately irregardless of handedness. The dexterity required to use a mouse is so minimal it can be trained for either hand. It IS awkward at first but anyone can learn it and be just as effective either way. This isnt catching a ball or signing your signature we are talking about.
|
I eat with my left hand, throw a ball with my left hand, kick with my right foot, bat right handed, play guitar right handed, box southpaw, skateboard goofy, wrestle like a righthander (if stagger stance), write with my left hand and use a computer like a right hander.
I don't know what is going on.

I hope this didn't turn out to be really hard to read, but I'm very sleepy at the moment :p
im left handed but when i started using a computer i started it with my mouse in my right hand so i have no problems at all

When the game comes out, I will remap the arrow movement keys to WASD because I am used to that from playing WoW for 3.5 years. Anyhow, it just makes more sense than to have to slide your keyboard WAY to the left to use the arrow keys with your left hand.
I'm left handed but I can do some things right handed as well. Ask my girlfriend!

I have always used my right hand for gaming, even thou I'm a heavy left hander. I use a wacom a lot, and when I do I always use the left hand. Would be great if you could use two cursors. Anyway, I will try to switch hands, and use the mouse in the left hand, for the first time in my life, from now on, and see what happens. Can give a report in a few days. I have notice that I miss a lot of clicks in SC2, that I have not noticed before. I guess using the mouse on regular windows activity is not so demanding. Maybe I can play with the wacom as a mouse, I have a lot better precision.

Lefty here but ever since i was a little kid i have used the mouse with my right hand so it just feels natural.
Same as with playing tennis, shooting rifles/pistols, hockey etc - i do all these things with my right hand and pretty much only use my left for writing, eating and throwing.
Lots of lefties do these things, its called being cross-dominated

my aim in FPS games has always been better than my 'peers', and right-handed feels more natural, so i don't know what the hell your professor was smoking when he told you that using your 'wrong' hand is bad.
That's not to say you wouldn't be even better with your opposite hand. The fact you are better with your 'wrong' hand doesn't disprove what the professor was saying - but I really think it's whatever hand you use the most at that specific task.
I'm all mixed up, I can use the mouse with both hands but only the right hand is up to the task of sc. but for browsing and things like that I alternate hands

Yeh Im a lefty and between college desks, books, keyboards/mouse, videogames basically anything except writing I am forced to do it right handed. I don't know how long (or how practical) it would take to learn it left handed. I have never thought of changing it, I just take it as it is. I should really bitch and demand acceptance and money like other minorities though... hmmm...
I wonder what hand I shoot with...
I wipe my ass with my.. wait I don't wipe actually.
My left side is more buff slightly than right (no fap jokes ok).
I wonder whats more important in SC keyboard or mouse control. In wow I had 50+ keybinds as a hunter so I know keyboard >>>> mouse in that. But in SC2 micro requires accuracy... I dunno. Are there any top players who are left handed? I play toss at about 300 ELO diamond, haven't really had problems with it yet.

I'm not really sure a right hander using right hand for a mouse will really perform better than a left handed using right hand for a mouse. I'd guess the years of practice is going to make a slight natural preference pretty negligible.
At the very least you get a better keyboard hand, which is gotta count for something. My mouse control is pretty damn good and I use it right handed, I don't notice my keyboard hand to be particularly brilliant though, mouse tends to take control in long bw games.

I've switched during the beta phase 1 like in may i guess, my hard part was to separate the 2 hands but i got that as my ambidextrous issue. my apm are back now and it's ok. u just need to switch completely and no hesitate and play one day with 1 setup and the other day with the other...
And there's ReMinD on wc3 and progamer and Hoejja is lefty but ye Hoejja... xd

I used to play DotA with my left hand so the left hand side mouse works well with me. I'm just glad they have hotkeys for lefties.
|
they still didn't changed the lefty settings :/ i'm still playing in grid i think that's maybe not the best but at least not the worst. I can't stand playing on the right side with right ctrl , the key is just to far and isolated.

Gaming right-handed style is what 99,9% of us lefties started with. I did the switch about 4 years ago (for fun) but I was mostly a FPS guy (Quake3, RTCW, ET) - you can bind keys in those games to your liking. If I wanted to switch back to right-handed style there would be no problems since I can game with both hands equally good now. But FPS != RTS so it probably wouldn't work as good... Here's to hoping that Blizzard will go with the flow and actually lets you bind the hotkeys manually... it's 2010 ffs...
Also to all those saying that they'll never be equally good with the other hand... Back when I switched from right to left I struggled for several days but after two weeks it started to get more comfortable and after about a month I regained my previous accuracy. It's funny that some people try something for 5 minutes and immediately decide that they can't do it... some things may take time you know but not neccessarily as much as you'd think. Still I don't know if it really 'boosted' my performance since I noticed no real difference when I switched back to right hand...
|
The difference will be show in fps game more than in rts i guess but that depend if ur directing eye is the right or the left one. As it's the same part of the brain controlling the right eye and the left part of the body, ur reflex time are shorter...
I wait customkeys to as in wc3 .... but there's no lan , no chatroom , at least we got the choice to put grid so i don't expect much for the moment :/ u can still do it in the MPQ but i don't want too as if u need to change comp etc ur screwed :/

I'm left handed, but I find right hand controls to be more comfortable since I've been using them forever. Learn to use right hand stuff cause this world is filled with it. Developing some form of being ambidextrous is way more beneficial that that relying on your left side completely.
|
The lefty hotkeys still suck...some of them are the same as the right handed hotkeys, which obviously sucks.
|
me and rekrul play left handed
|
I'm also left handed. I have my mouse on the left side. I use standard hotkeys.
I attempted left standard and left grid. For some reason, it wouldnt let me assign groups with my right control key. I use that function a lot and having it far away from all the other keys was no good for me.

nazgul and rekrul , feel free to any advice u want to ^^ even if htink there's no really big tips but anyway ^^

Funny thing I found on Artosis' youtube channel:
http://www.youtube.com/ArtosisTV#p/u/7/LETVtRolpXc
'seems like it's always Protoss players...' - I lol'd so hard since I'm also a Protoss that happens to be left-handed...
tl;dw - the video shows the Protoss player Naniwa playing left-handed style at IEM Cologne

I'm a terrible lefty. I advocate against all this right-handed bias in our world, and then succumb to it.
I have been a lefty playing in a righty's world for about 10 years (off and on). I fear for me, it's too late.
Maybe with the new patch I'll try to amend my ways.

Left handed and i play standard
|
IMO Left handed people should jsut play standard - Computer gaming involves both hands. My right hand isn't better at FPS than my left hand is ... My left hand is the master of WASD, my right is the master of the mouse. I'm a hudnred percent sure if i had the type of control over my right hand on my left instead (ie I have two right hands) my movement would be fucked in FPS's.
|
I'm left mixed, but still I just play like a righty. No need to make an awkward setup for anyone else who may use the PC so I can feel more special.
|
there's no "main" hand in gaming, you're great on the keys with your left hand and great on the aiming/clicking on the right hand, why would one of the hands be better for any of these? i'm not a lefty but that doesn't mean my keyboard usage is suffering. as a righty i have problems gripping with my left hand, not using my fingers. so, am i gripping the keyboard? no, i'm just pressing buttons with my fingers, something i can do with all my fingers as none of the fingers are lefty/righty
