I always download patches or game clients from Blizzard with Peer-to-Peer disabled. The download speeds are always faster.

Why does Blizzard say disabling Peer-to-Peer will result in slower d/l speeds? Do they benefit in some way if we d/l with Peer-to-Peer enabled?

Thanks.

peer to peer is like seeding in torrents, if its on more people upload parts of the patch to you which results in faster downloading.

otherwise youre just downloading from blizz' servers are a regular download speed

If that's the case then why is it faster to disable peer-to-peer? Whenever I look at the connection information the d/l rate with it disabled is always faster.

Perhaps because when the game is released it will actually be faster?

Small number of seeds due to relatively few users in beta, or you have a firewall blocking connections.

If you have a fat pipe, you will get faster results from swarm downloads (i.e. with P2P enabled), as the direct HTTP download from blizzard will probably be overused by tons of people trying to download the same thing as you.

If your connection is DSL or lower, I recommended turning off the P2P downloading, as the upload rate will probably screw your download past the point of usefulness.

(Funny, I just was screwing with this today when downloading the SC:BW installer again on my laptop...)

The upload rate on P2P only screws with your download if you let it flood your whole upload bandwidth ... just make sure you set your client to not use all the available upload bandwidth. Having said that over the years I have quite often had terriblee experiences with blizzards downloader completely clogging the internet connection when downloading wow patches and not letting anything else communicate. It seems to have got a bit better lately though

get some software that can traffic shape based on processes?
i do that all the time and had never any problems with blizz downloaders, just make sure they don't get more than 75%-80% of your max upstream and you are fine.

As someone who's done this before, could you recommend specific software?

P2P is always faster, unless you use some weird ass synchronous DSL. OP is probably having some problems with his network configuration.

It's likely that you've got a firewall or NAT blocking incoming connections from peers, so your ability to connect with peers is severely hampered. If you have a router then you either need to port forward or use UPnP. It could also be that you have a very low upstream. The less you upload, the less peers will send to you.

If there is a low load on Blizzards servers you will download faster without p2p since Blizzard can max out your download bandwidth, and uploading does eat into it somewhat.

If there is a large load on the servers, such as after the games release then you will see a much higher download speed with p2p enabled, as Blizzards servers will be slammed.

if u disable p2p blizzard caps your download at certain number, thats why they say its slower. but p2p sucks up your upload so once it maxes out your download becomes even slower than with p2p disabled. blizzard just needs to add an option to limit upload speed or cap it.

Alright thanks guys. I currently am running a MacBook Pro with an airport as a router. I went into system preferences and made sure I had the firewall disabled. When using the downloader I had a green light - meaning no issues/firewall.

Do you think that the slow download is because of the low amount of peers downloading as well, or am I missing some sort of firewall?

Or do I need to adjust the upload cap?

Thanks for the help. Not really that urgent, but like I said, a curiosity.

If the light is green it is strange that you are getting low speeds, can you give us some numbers with and without p2p disabled? also what's your max up/down (from say speedtest.net)?
