---StarCraft II Q&A Batch 55---
1. Not all potential players of StarCraft II have played the original StarCraft before, thus they might encounter problems with the understanding of the story. Is it possible to play the campaign of StarCraft II without knowing anything? Will you come up with some things that happened in the original StarCraft and Brood War again – just so that people not familiar to the story get more information? We plan on having story elements that will bring players up to speed on the most recent plot developments and prepare them for the StarCraft II storyline. We also plan on having a plot summary of what transpired in the original StarCraft and Brood War during the installation process. However we feel that regardless of your familiarity with the original story, all players will be able to enjoy the story developments in StarCraft II.
2. You have already announced that you are going to record various stats when playing StarCraft II with the new Battle.net 2.0 – but how detailed will those statistics be? Will one be able to see how many units of a certain kind (for example Marines) one have build or even killed so far? We will be recording a large amount of stats for StarCraft II, but we are still in discussion as to which stats will ultimately be tracked. We will determine how detailed the stat-tracking will be based on what information we think will benefit our players the most to help improve their game.
3. You have already stated that you will support DirectX 10, but what about DirectX 11? We currently do not have any plans on supporting DirectX11-specific features, but the game will be compatible with DirectX11.
4. How many stats will a Hero unit be able to take? Three like in Warcraft 3 or is there even a limit? If you create a user-amp with heroes, you can outfit them with a large number of stats. However, currently only three stats will be able to be displayed on the UI due to limited space.
5. In lore Protoss warp in their units and buildings from some far planet. Will there be any mechanic that reflects this such as a "warp out" that could act as a refund? We do not have any plans to include a “warp out” game mechanic. We have discussed the possibility of this in the past, but it felt too similar to the Terran mechanics of being able to salvage the structures.
6. Will there be a converter to convert our favorite original StarCraft maps to StarCraft II maps? I don’t want to lose all of my favorite maps from the original StarCraft when I get StarCraft II. There will not be a map converter for StarCraft II. Map-makers will have to manually rebuild any of their maps using the new StarCraft II map editor.
7. I'm just going to assume that you will have some sort of window mode in StarCraft II. But I was wondering if you're going to implement a windowed mode like the one that World of Warcraft has? You know where you can maximize the window, removing the borders and enabling fullscreen mode yet providing easy access to the desktop. You will be able to select both windowed and full-screen windowed modes from the options menu.

These were some really dumb questions.
"Can my heroes have a Charisma stat? And Proficiencies? And a backstory pane?"

Agreed, one of the worst Q&A IMO
|
Q&A doesn't say any relevant info anymore..
|
|
They should put extensive stat tracking in if they want SC2 to be an ESPORT. A big part of sports fandom revolves around following stats and debates about what they mean. I'd love to be able to look up things like who has the highest average kills per psistorm or most lurkers ever canceled in a single game or historical changes in marine/medic ratio.
|
Shitty Q & A overall, but thats the norm now thanks for sharing.
I agree with Mucker about the stat tracking. Hopefully (and I have faith with Blizzard) they are tracking an immense amount of things.
|
The fuck is this? I mean, seriously, I think it can't get any worse from here. This has to be the single worst Q&A session EVER.
I think they should put themselves and the community out of misery, and just stop with Q&As. It is clear they have far out lived their usefulness, and if they don't have anything relative to comment on, they just shouldn't do it overall. This is beyond crap, this is just insulting -.-

There is an inordinate amount of nerd rage in this topic so far.
|
|
Seriously a question about windowed mode rofl that is pretty damn lame.

funny thing about q&a's is that they're SOMEONE's questions... whether or not they're interesting to us who already obsess over every minute little detail about gameplay is irrelevant at this point.
|
hahaha this was so terrible
|
There are people that have never played SC1 that are planning to play SC2? How did that question even come about?
|

World of Warcraft has the best implemented windowed mode I've ever seen in a game. At desktop resolution, it looks identical to full screen, runs at the same fps as full screen, but is obviously much more responsive to alt tabbing (and you can put windows on top of it, of course).

|
Dumb questions, answered mostly with "we're still not sure" and "no you can't"...
Sometimes when I think about SC2 I just want to start screaming and crying in despair because this game simply isn't coming out any time soon, despite the fact that I've been already waiting for 11 years.
|
Boring
Not worth the wait
|
Well, questions 3, 4 and 7 were moderately interesting, so not the worst Q&A yet. But it shouldn't be all that surprising that the newer Q&As are not as good as most of the earlier ones. There's simply a limit to how many intelligent questions you can ask.
|
Well that was a tad disappointing t.t
|
|
This provides very little useful information.
|
Answers to 3, 4, 5 and 6 were expected, and 7... I wouldn't have been surprised by "no wmode", but that would have been soooo embarrassing for Blizzard.
|
I am serious now because it would be cool for me, just to be able to know.
I'd like to be able to see total zerglings (and other units) deaths on BN in number and both in numbers and percentage:
- how many got killed by each race
- on a specified server - West, East, Europe, Asia, etc
- by each nation
- and continent
- and of course how many got killed by what unit / ability
- even the day when the most of them got killed (well maybe no % for this one)
I guess weekly updates would make sense. + Show Spoiler +I guess tracking trends when the most dies (morning, afternoon, evening) would be overdoing it.

Except for all the others that gave no info at all.

That was even worse than I expected, and my expectations were REALLY low when I saw there was a new Q&A batch :/

these q&a's are getting worse and worse
|
terribad Q&A is terribad. =(
|
|
why do they even do Q and A any more?
|
Its a shame that more then half of the things in starcraft two are coming directly from warcraft, while another major chunk is coming from C&C. Its because of that reason alone im skeptical about Starcraft 2. I often wonder why Chris Metzen was not given the role of lead designer, as he was one of the two main people in charge of the original starcraft.
As far as the Q&A goes, I fail to see why they are still maintained, especially with these questions >_>

"why o why can't this game be more like wow cry cry tear tear" Try being less of a god damned retard maybe? Seriously, did you even read the question or did you just see the word "World" followed immediately by "of" and "Warcraft" and start pissing yourself in unbridled hysteria?

so much disappointment *sigh*

Does anyone know if there are difficulty settings for single player? I want to play on hardest.
Also nice to see a refresh of what happened in Brood War cause I have never played single player.
|
I don't even read this Q&As anymore. They just don't tell me anything.

They're obviously releasing it to quell the masses waiting on more info on the game. I doubt they've made any huge gameplay changes and are just fine tuning bnet or something.
Everyone needs to calm down for serious.

Window mode will be helpful, at least. That's....something.

AMM will apply to 1v1 and 2v2,3v3,4v4 games I don't think they are applying it to FFA games yet, but I'm not sure.

The AMM includes ratings for teams. Of course, we don't know (yet) how it will handle a "new" team, but I presume there's some sort of average level calculation in there.
So no, you won't be getting your wish.

Well window mode was the most interesting question, but I would be really surprised if The answer was different...
Crappy Q&A, but what to expect
Well when it comes to why the game is taking so long time I can actually understand that, because I am a computer programmer myself and I know how extreme high amounts of code a game like this has... Computer games are usually known for poor code, because the programmers don't have the time to optimize it..... And srysly SC2 is huge... The only thing I cant understand is why Blizzard announce the game like 4-6 years before its release?

Of course it has heroes, just not in ladder play.

I'm interested in the stat tracking for sure, Agree fully with mucker's post. Reading stats and agonising over every detail, what fun ^_^
Spell kills would be very interesting indeed, and units lost to spells, seeing how good players are at using them.
I want a stat for # of storms/hunterseeker/nuke etc, that ended up doing 0 damage =p and number of casters that died without casting would be hilarious. + Show Spoiler +the recent Jaedong vs Stork set 2 I think, lurkers eating templars ftw =p
