The w3 pool is so huge and I used to really admire that about it.. I'd go and check to see if I'd been tailoring it without my knowledge... but that would be a huge endeavor... w3 did favour 1v1 on huge maps with loads of pathways so I'd say you're probably right in the analogy (coloring too I suppose).
