hey guys. as far as i can see, there aren't any threads concerning the armory upgrades (with good ole swann). does anyone have a listing of upgrades, as well as suggestions as to which ones to get?
if there are none, might as well start one here; i'll look up the ones i have when i get back from the lab today.
edit// here goes. keep in mind, i'm playing through brutal a few hours a day, so i likely won't get everything up for a while myself. if you reply with a unit, i'll add it.
BASE
Bunker + Show Spoiler + - +1 range, 40k - +2 capacity, 50k
Missile Turret + Show Spoiler + - +75 life, 50k - adds secondary, AOE attack, (don't know price)
SCV + Show Spoiler + -multiple SCVs can build a structure at one time - faster rate, same cost. 60k -SCVs repair twice as fast, 80k
INFANTRY
Marine + Show Spoiler + -stimpack, -10 life, +50% attack and move for a few seconds. (don't know price) -combat shields, +10 life, (don't know price)
Medic + Show Spoiler + -no longer requires tech lab addon (i.e. you can build it with reactors), 60k -25% faster heal, 33% lower energy usage per heal point, (don't know price)
Marauder + Show Spoiler + -concussive shells slow enemies, 70k - +25 life, 90k
Firebat + Show Spoiler + - +40% larger area attack, (don't know price) - +2 armor, 85k
Reaper + Show Spoiler + - +1 range, +3 damage to light, 60k - G-4 antipersonnel clusterbomb, 75k (like the old reaper ability that was removed for multi)
Vehicles
Hellion + Show Spoiler + - doubles width of aoe flame, 40k - +10 damage to light (infernal preigniter), (don't know price)
Goliath + Show Spoiler + -can fire at both air and ground targets simultaneously, (don't know price) -+3 missile, +1 cannon range, (don't know price)
Siege Tank + Show Spoiler + - +40 damage to primary target, aoe damage unchanged, 105k - -75% friendly fire damage, 140k

stim pack is absolutely essential, and it's cheap too! I would recommend getting both marine upgrades, get the hp boost for marauders and get the better healing for medics.
I'm shying away from getting any firebat upgrades because firebats are ONLY usable vs lings. They don't do crap to protoss and vs the rest of the zerg army they suck.
I haven't gotten far enough to get anything past marauders though.

the infantry ones are practical, you never find yourself in a situation where stim combatshield, firebat armor and range and both the medic upgrades will not benefit you in any of the missions. Reaper upgrades are relatively useless, but all the other infantry will be worth it.
You know infantry wont ever be useless so get most of those (except reaper) there is also no point where marauder slow will save you (they lack stimpack), the extra health though is nice.
Building upgrades, especially the autorepair, bunker and turret ones are also pretty darn nice, did not get the invisible flamethrower defences because at that point where you would want that instead of firebats and bunkers you can simply go planetary fortress.
Then theres banshee aoe, viking aoe and range, battlecruiser defensive matrix, goliath shoot up and down at the same time, my favourite pay 200 gas to get back your thors tank upgrades are nice but ultimately you could complete the game without them.
The upgrades are pretty straightforward though.
Oh and the Scv ones. pretty awesome.

I actually got the reaper upgrades just because I like microing a bunch of reapers around the map. I know it's inefficient, but running around with a group of 10+ reapers with upgraded range and throwing bombs is a lot of fun.
The Medic heal upgrade is awesome! and of course stim + health for marines. Didn't get any of the bunker upgrades though.
|
Oh forgot to mention. Medic heal upgrade is completely overpowered. With one marine, I was able to take out 2 void rays or 3 mutas.
|
Goliath multiple fire, medic heal, and Thor Immortality Protocol are all very useful.
|
I think maurader slow is quite useful when you're doing static D missions. On the dig having a maurader with slow in each bunker makes immortals and whatnot take ages to reach your tanks, particularly if you get the bunker +1 range upgrade as well.

For vehicles:
Diamondback
+1 range - 75000 +50 hp - 90000

If you want to tailor your upgrades to the hardest mission(last one) you NEED to get planetary fortress(zerg research), both SCV upgrades(repair speed and multiple building), both tank upgrades, especially the -75% friendly splash, Without those the last mission, especially on brutal will be so much more of a pain

the mindcontrolling tower is also pretty godlike.

I haven't been able to use new upgrades on older missions. Does anyone know if this is intended or any way around it?
For example, when I played through XXX mission I didn't have siege tanks.
A few missions down the road I have siege tanks and other upgrades. When I go to replay XXX mission, I don't have any upgrades.
This kinda sucks but.. not sure if its intended or a bug. Any ideas?

Wow, I never even thought about Planetary Fortresses for the final mission. Did it without them. And I had them researched too...

I would reccomend stockpiling a few nukes when you have the resources too.
Iraddiate is also amazing vs. Ultras, and it only costs 25 energy instead of 75! Nano-Repair almost feels OP in missions where you prioritize Banshee/Viking.
Looking back, I don't think getting Jackson's Revenge was a wise investment for the last missions, or the BC upgrades for that matter.

I didn't have any upgrades when I replayed the first few missions on hard. But, I did have all upgrades when I replayed the 3 opposing choices on normal.

There's some kind of limit, but you do get the upgrades. You just won't be able to use Siege Tanks on the Mar Sara missions or anything extreme. It seems like you only get the unit/upgrade to use in the mission if it would be possible to have access to it with alternative choices, so no "impossible" situations can happen.

Base: Get everything, it's all useful in just about every level.
Infantry: Stimpack, combat shield, and medic heals are a must. Even if you don't like infantry get these upgrades since you'll often need these units to defend at the beginning of missions or get given them in installation missions.
Vehicles: Get both tank upgrades. Tanks are very necessary for defence in almost every mission.
Air: Viking upgrades are both ridiculous, with AOE damage and 11 range you dominate anything airborn. Banshee AOE is also really good.
Other than those key upgrades it's basically up to personal choice.
