In 2019 The top 5 in WR spending as a % of their cap was: Browns, Colts, Bengals, Bears, Texans. Not exactly your hallmarks of success or historically good general management. Actually using that chart was quite fun. It seems like, at least for 2019, the only place where it pretty consistently seemed like people were getting their money's worth was interior defensive line. Defense as a whole seems to be undervalued compared to spending on the offensive side (as a general rule, but it contains some outliers like the Packers who were great and spent the most on offense).

My general opinion is the top end players (say top 5 or 10 depending on the position) at each position deserve their money, these are the guys that actually move the needle and are game changers. Having Cooper for example totally transformed the Cowboys offense. It is when teams pay the next set of guys that top tier money that they get in to trouble. This is most noticeable at QB because the dollars are so extreme, but it happens at every position.

That doesn't mean much, considering NFL GMs have so many tools to delay or advance their cap hit. The top 5 teams in terms of spending on defense were pretty bad too, with the exception of the Ravens. There is so much weirdness with the numbers. For example, the 49ers and Patriots are among the league leaders in spending on RBs, with the 49ers on top last year. Before you use that to talk about the importance of RBs, it looks to me like FB is lumped in with RB and half of the 49ers "RB" money went to Kyle Juszczyk. Another 20% or so of their RB spending went to McKinnon, who did absolutely nothing last year.

What a shame. Mertz looked awesome last Friday. Also Zach Wilson from BYU as a sleeper Heisman candidate. He won't go before Lawrence/Fields/Lance in the draft though.

Edit: Next week is the NW game and I want to go but I doubt I'll get within 100 yards of the stadium.
